What possibly makes you think pick 5 is not a gamble? It has a chance of landing a 'plug and play midfielder' - it also has a chance of landing Jimmy Toumpas.ย

Don't get me wrong - I like the draft pick - but this is a classic case of opting for the mystery box over the known quantity

In relative terms - pick 5 is at least as much of a gamble as Dan Houstonย

I disagree with what I know of the players at the top end of this yearโ€™s draft. In JT I trust. In saying this you may well end up being correct. Iโ€™d still prefer we gambled on a 10-12 year elite mid over a 28 year old Houston. ย Adding players at Houstonโ€™s age and likely cost doesnโ€™t excite me with our current list profile

That was reported on August 30. Jon Ralph last night reported on 'Midweek Tackle' that he is still very much open for a move and linked him with StKilda for a potential pick 8. Further grist to the mill.

Werenโ€™t the media all liars, in your eyes, during the Petracca saga?

Exactly my point. Thank you. Lie that the Demons are going to' hand back keys' but all is rosy at Port. Could easily be flipped if they want. Which report is true? The ABC or Jon Ralph?ย

Port will probably be hoping he requests a trade.

Imagine trading Houston away for a couple of first round picks and bringing in perryman and possibly cumming as free agents.

Port are going to be the real winner.

My mail is that Houston is off to the Saints. 5/6 years at $850 per year.ย

Clearly been offered midfield time as St Kilda have a glut of half backs.

Hill, Waganeen-Milerra and Sinclair are all guns back there.

Saints going to pay a first rounder given theyโ€™ll get a first round compo pick for Battle?ย

So Port will get two first rounders. Their natural and the Battle compo pick after St Kilda's natural first.

I wonder if Port will try and package their two picks to get ahead of Adelaide so they can get Draper?

Houston choosing Stkilda over MFC, what an absolute embarrassment for our club. Sort it out MFC, we need to be able to attract A grade talent.ย

Port don't have their natural first round pick. Belongs to freo after they traded it for two 2nd round picks last year.

$850k a season is too much. No embarrassment here.

St Kilda willing to trade a first round pick. We are not. Embarrassing for who?

Reported already on 'Midweek Tackle' last night. Old news.

Thatโ€™s the opposite of whatโ€™s been said by the club. All picks are on the table this year, including our future first, โ€˜we need to get older not youngerโ€™ย

Agreed on the basis that Houston is one of the best players to be reportedly on the market in recent years. And to have a star allegedly interested in coming to our club and then turning us down is an absolute kick in the guts and shows exactly where we are at the moment.ย

The apathy toward this player is something else and Iโ€™m convinced people around here arenโ€™t aware of how good he is.

Only the Eeyores who think everything besides an undefeated flag season is below par. 6 years at $850k is ridiculous and sadly for Dan he will likely go the way of most recruits at the Saints.

A lot of good, experienced, mature players chose years and cash to go to St Kilda in recent years.ย Hannebury,ย Jones,ย Carlisle,ย Howard, Kent to name a few.

They all achieved nothing.

St Kilda have been stuck on the mediocrity treadmill and the only way out is for them to add young, a-grade midfield talent which they could do with two early picks this year. Trading Houston would be a dumb move - but good luck to them.

Iโ€™m glad we didnโ€™t get the deal done for Houston. Not because I donโ€™t think heโ€™s a good player that would have improved us but because I think it shows the recruitment team value of pick 5 more than they value him.ย
I suspect that when we were interested we assumed we would have lower first rounder to trade maybe around 9/10 and that would have been fair. Power asking for two but I assume are settling for a top 10 pick.ย

He is an exceptionally good player and would make us better. There is no doubt about it.ย
If our midfield was stacked and we still had Gus I reckon we would be fine to trade away pick 5.ย
However this season showed us that midfielders are the priority and pick 5 will likely get us a good one.ย
ย

I still think that the Houston deal changed when we realized how good our first round pick was going to be. When we were in the top 8, we were willing to trade it and probably made it known to Port. But things change.ย
ย

Besides, St Kilda wouldnโ€™t be getting Houston if they were not losing Battle and getting a ridiculous first round compo pick in return. As if heโ€™s worth that! There essentially swapping Battle for Houston.ย

Just as I don't believe that Houston moves the needle for us, I feel the same about him at the Saints. They already have Sinclair and Wanganeen-Milera who can play the same role at the same level as Houston. They've recruited a couple of guns in the past 2 drafts in Phillipou and Wilson. They need to continue down that path.ย

Houston may want more game time as a mid, but he doesn't have a track record as one to justify giving up 2 1st round picks for him.ย

He's in a bit of a pickle now Houston, because he won't be winning anything at the Powa.

Looks like it's the Saints and a road to nowhere.

it reminds me a bit of the zac williams to carlton move - the intention is that he was leaving gw$ so that he could play full-time in the midfield

i think that lasted about half a dozen games before he was (well, injured and then) back to the half-back flank

now he's essentially replaced jack martin or jack silvagni as an extra forward who can create havoc because he's so naturally talented he's able to make something out of nothing

personally i'd love houston to land with us - as a half-back flanker he would be a marked upgrade on salem, bowey, rivers, or mcvee, and allow them to be deployed elsewhereย

None of those players were actually any good. Prime Hanners obviously but he was shot by the time he made it to St Kilda.

Brad Hill I guess but he was never going to make a difference.

This current St Kilda side has some more potential with some really nice drafting in recent years but I canโ€™t help youโ€™re right that theyโ€™re still stuck in the middle.

Lose Battle, trade for Houston, get stuck in the same spot.

But itโ€™s an ever comp. Draft a gun midfielder with their other first and theyโ€™ll be about as talented as a Port side that just finished second.ย

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwinโ€™s summer of love.ย Manyย issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
