PODCAST: Rd 18 vs Essendon

Recommended Posts

The Demonland Podcast will not be LIVE again this week. Binman will do his regular stats files segment for the game against the Bombers and will also preview the upcoming match against the Dockers. He will not be taking any questions.

I will post the show here once I receive Binman's stats files. You can also find it wherever you get your podcasts from.

We will return in our regular format once I return after the Dockers match.

I'm going to debut the binman Unleashed segment- a blatant rip off cornes' volcano.

Just got to decide what makes me most angry.

There's more than a few options.

Go redleggers.

I know Binners loves his stats so riddle me this.....

( Not knocking the team on their epic win but).....

We lost the tackle, marking, handball, kicks, i50s, frees, and hit outs.

And apart from some junk time goals and some questionable umpire calls, it was a big win.

Apart from goals what stats did we win that facilitated it?

Edit.....we did win the clearances...my apologies. Credit to a great second half from Oliver and a cracking first from Rivers.

Tx.

Ed Langdon turned back the clock providing that width and overlap we all love. He has to be one of the greatest athletes we've ever seen in the game and nearly 16km covered on a wet night is seriously impressive.

The Olympics are around the corner and my question for the panel is a fun hypothetical: What Olympic track event would Ed Langdon excel in most? Sprints? Middle distance? Marathons? keen to hear from you guys on this.

How about the media hype about Draper's game? The media make it sound like he single-handedly carried the Bombers, whereas from my perspective, his ruck dominance made no difference at all. The main reason they were ahead in the first quarter was their ability to get over the back of our defence, not Draper's influence.

But I will of course understand if you are more worked up about the umpires' performance, particularly in the last few minutes.

Binman, I want to know what we would get for Max when we trade him away. Clearly, he is surplus to requirements now. Perhaps we could get two power forwards, a Brownlow mid-fielder and a couple of Hibberd/Jetta-style defenders? No, wait, I AM joking. It was a terrific performance by the team on Saturday night. They snuffed out the Bombers' surge in the first quarter and then stemmed Essendon's fourth quarter surge - perhaps less emphatically. I'm just curious about how much the weather helped us. Wet weather is generally considered a leveller, bringing more highly skilled teams down a peg or two. I'm not very confident about beating Freo in the dry. Tell me I'm wrong. Please.

I'm sure you will cover off all the many positives  of our youngsters who are leading the way in the last few weeks

but can you talk to some of the negatives in particular of a couple of players who have not got going this year.

Tom Sparrow - what is his role I genuinely don't know 12-13 possessions each week , I barely notice him in game and when I do it's because he is slow to move the ball.

Christian Salem -  just seems to be only, receiving a non threatening pass, then proceed to kick a non threataning pass to a player player 20m metres away , been down massively since the highs of 2021

Jake Bowey - I know he has ben injured but has been a liability in defence at times with his size, and his kicking has not been a weapon this year.

I guess they stay in due to not really having anyone ready to go showing good form @ Casey.

What do you guys think? of their game / years and who can come in??

Who plays on Luke Jackson when he’s forward of centre? How much will Freo’s fortunes rest on his performance?

Luke had 20 disposals and a goal against the Hawks in a losing game and I worry he could be very damaging if he gets going on Sunday.

I presume he is playing a role - binman, do you have access to his pressure ratings? Is that what he is doing?  Not every player is going to need 30 disposals and a few goals.

TMAC, his running ability means he matches up well with mobile talls.

The forward is starting to look really settled and it’s the best it’s looked in a while, with the form of Turner , Roo and the return of Melksham, who is a definite leader up there and also frees up Fritter. (Kozzie in career best form too)

Do you think it’s the best set up we’ve had in a long time and do you give kudos to the coaches for sticking with youth not only in the forward line but with the confidence and continuing development of Windsor and Roo, McVee AMW and the Kolt?.

Rivers has been a revelation the middle and will give us an extra string to our bow and our mid rotations in years to come.

GAMEDAY: Rd 22 vs Port Adelaide

It's Game Day and on the back of 3 straight losses this is officially our last roll of the dice to attempt to make finals in season 2024. A win (and percentage) will keep us in the hunt for another week whereas a loss will end the dream of making a 4th straight final's series.

    RETRO by The Oracle

I like the AFL’s idea of a Retro Round but I don’t think we need to go back as far as 1998 as suggested by the Melbourne Football Club. Three years will be good enough for me. I would happily travel back in time on the  Demonland DMC De Laurean to Thursday 8th July 2021, a time when the fog of COVID19 was slowly lifting and Melbourne gave Port Adelaide a 31 point spanking at Adelaide Oval. Before that, there’s really not much to go retro about all the way back to the early 90s when the Port team

    LEARNINGS by KC from Casey

It took little time for Footscray to establish its domination over the Casey Demons in their VFL Round 19 clash at Mission Whitten Oval on Friday afternoon. The Doggies had the early advantage of the breeze and, as those with a knowledge of the old VFL venue second only to Essendon’s ground for swirly winds will tell you, a good start is vital in such conditions. The five goal to one opening term which saw Footscray’s midfield dominate possession, turned out to be enough to secure the win a

    HALF HEARTED by Whispering Jack

Melbourne fell out of the premiership race after producing a half-hearted effort against Footscray on Friday night. The team was barely recognizable from the one that, earlier in the season, established a 6/2 win-loss ratio that included a 55-point thumping of the Bulldogs in Round 1. It was a poor effort from a team that had its entire season on the line and the blame falls almost squarely on the midfield which has collapsed from being a peerless premiership-winning combination to the leve

It's Game Day, and the Demons' hopes for making the finals in the 2024 season are hanging by a thread. A loss would be the final blow to a disappointing season, while a win against the in-form Bulldogs would offer a temporary reprieve. LFG!
