Vale Clyde Laidlaw

Of the 13,000-odd players who’ve played AFL/VFL, he tops the poll for having the winning-est career of those having played 100 games or more: 81.05%.

Saw him at a local cafe last year, sporting his Demon cap. Nice man.

His record at the MCG is even more remarkable.

He played there 66 times for 58 wins, two draws and just six losses.

Bit of knowledge in here. Thanks team.

And thanks Clyde.

Wow, the man barely knew what a loss was!

May he continue his winning ways at the G in the sky, and hopefully watch us return to such comprehensive dominance very soon :-)

RIP

Clyde Laidlaw what a man, what a winning record another of Norm Smiths Legends follows his skipper and coach into MFC History. RIP Clyde.

I was fortunate enough to have a 30 minute convo with Clyde at a granny breakfast a few years ago. What a lovely man. And a Demon through and through. Goody had just taken over from Roosy and he was very bullish on the Dees. Really knew his football - good footy brain as they say.

He also loved Brasso like a brother and said our success in the 50's and 60's had much to do with Ron's drive and desire to win at all costs. He also loved Norm.

Roost 'em from the Smoker's stand flank Clyde - and may the umpshires wave two flags in your direction forever more. Lov ya Man.

The Melbourne champions of my youth are moving to football heaven far too quickly, but the memories will linger forever.  RIP Clyde.  Condolences to his family.

I would have seen Clyde play in 1959 and 1960 and he fitted in to our champion team very nicely at CHF.

Tough and uncompromising he will meet more of his glory  days mates in heaven. Plenty of looking down and in awe of their record.

R.I.P. Clyde and sincere sympathies to your family and friends.

R.I.P Clyde, it's one hell of a record you have had over the journey.

Rest well.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Saturday Night’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • NON-MFC: Round 02

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

  • POSTGAME: St. Kilda

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
