Dont think we will ever find a genuine Jackson replacement

Could possibly use Houston or Parish as some sort of Brayshaw replacement type roll.

Peter Wright could be some sort of floating forward / second ruck option.

Can an attack of Fritsch, JVR and Waterman really work?

Id like a pacey mid as well - asking too much?

We got an attack of Brown Fristch and Tmac to work

If you were Freo, would you use pick 8,13,16 for Shai Bolton and Liam Baker? I don’t know how you pay them all - they are stacked with talent if they can attract these 2.

Maybe a Brayshaw or Serong pops out the other end of the salary cap...

Brayshaw maybe. No way you’d be letting Serong go though

I wouldn’t… that’s a lot!

Essendon have an abundance of talls so Peter Wright may be gettable but I wouldn't want to be giving much up for him.

Whatever happened to Sam Weideman?

If getting Peter Wright allows JVR to play KPF without having to second ruck, I expect him to explode next year.

A forwardline of:

ANB Wright Trac

Koz JVR Fritta

With Turner and maybe Spargo on the bench, with Chandler in reserve is pretty tasty IMO.

Almost tempted to do a Werridee and smash up a best 22. Particularly, if Houston and a 2024 first rounder can all be landed.

That first 1/4 was something to behold

The turnovers drove me crazy

Giddy has got some skills. That behind the back pass in I think the first or second was some kind of very good

I would offer future 1st instead of 13 but otherwise definitely.

Bulls supporters were having a cry over trading for him. Could be a masterstroke.

he'll certainly be better off playing the point in chicago than being the off guard in okc

handle can be a bit loose at times but some of his passing is electric quick

He's only 21 years old though, so has plenty of growth left in his game.

A lot of American players don't even get drafted until that age and he's already played 2-3 seasons.

Is this an AFL thread?

Price dependent of course, but the more I think about recruiting Peter Wright, the more I like it.

It solves our second ruck problem, it also gives JVR and Turner an older, bigger foil, and releases Petty back to defence or pushes Turner out.

ANB Wright Trac

Kozzy JVR Fritta

With Turner, Spargo and Chandler (and McAdam?) to take the other one or two spots.

That's got a good mix to it. Wright the only one not great at ground level, and Fritta needs to lift his game defensively, but otherwise you've got 4 guys that like to swarm at ground level.

If we can bring in Houston and/or Cumming, *and* keep our 2024 first rounder, it would be a dream trade and draft period IMO.

If Wright is looking for a fresh start and Bombers want him off their books I’m all for it. He’s contracted until 2027 so guessing we would take on the full salary but maybe only give a third round pick or something. Given we have Brown, Schache, Tomlinson and potentially TMac all off our list we need some mature key position players to replace them.

You still need at least 1 bull who can win you the ball. Port have Wines (a Brownlow medalist). We just happen to have 3-4 of them (Trac, JV, Oliver and arguably Sparrow), which is why we have been good at the contested game.

I also think Trac just needs to accept that he is better for the team in a 60/40 forward/midfield role. He is one of the hardest matchups in that role, which creates a nightmare for just about any defensive system.

We also need to find a new role for JV - it seems that time has caught up with him.

Midfield to take us forward is: Oliver, Rivers, Windsor, McVee, #Pick 7. There is a lot of unknown in that mix but we have enough senior leaders around the club to aide in its development. Sparrow, Trac, Kozzy will all have some time running through it as well (JV can also contribute in the time that he remain playing).

I think McVee is a HBF and calls for him to move to the midfield miss his value.

On the open market I could see Bolton netting 2 first rounders (with one being inside 10) and Baker being valued at a mid 1st rd pick. I’d do the deal if I’m Freo.

Dockers list profile is very young, so draft picks not necessarily required to keep the list profile ticking over. To be approaching contention now is impressive and they have most bases covered positionally. I’d do the deal. Both players have premiership experience and can provide succession from Walters and O’Meara in their starting 18, which is actually pretty scary.

Cap wise, it’s hard to know in the new world of the ‘23 CBA, clubs have a fair bit of space to play with in the cap now, but I’d love to shake Hayden Young out of there.

Wright could play 5 games for the year and be an immediate upgrade on Brown and Schache in season ‘24.

That alone makes it a smart depth play. Even if Jeffo graduates, I don’t expect him to play out every game next season, and we are sorely in need of a viable second ruck to take some load off Max’s shoulders.

Poor Kossie and Nibbler trying to chase 6 blokes.

Wright is slow. JVR is....not quick.

Any forward or forward/ruck that we bring in should have some athleticism especially if the plan is for some combination of Melk/Jeffo/Petty/Disco as the 3rd tall option.

I also don't understand the concern with JVR as back up ruck and/or the belief that he's ready to explode. He shows some flashes and he'll be a good player for a long time but I still expect him to just improve steadily and the runs in the ruck get him involved in the game.

So Darcy Cameron and Mason Cox who were Collingwoods main ruck/forward combination last year in their premiership year, are regarded as more athletic and quicker then Peter Wright?

Interesting.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
