Not sure Spargo will ever be a viable wing with his zero overhead game, but Chandler took some rotations in the last 2 weeks and looked fine.

We need to do what every other club does and realise the wing is largely a trash position and stop spending so much on it and rotate guys through.

Chander, Fritsch, Tholstrup should all play some minutes there, heck even Disco if he has a big summer and that way Windsor and Langdon can move around.

Spargo played some wing in 2022-2023 to good effect IMO.

He also took a mark of the year candidate during this time which was overhead. I just don’t think he’s quick enough.

What’s your thoughts on the offer required? (Years? $$s??). Both would need to be sizeable.

Full moon tonight !!!  Some wild ideas here.

Anyone thinking we should ask the Swans about Angus Sheldrick.  He is probably looking elsewhere for opportunities.  Showed a lot in 2023 but injuries this year have restricted opportunity.  Only 20, but shown good form in last 2 weeks in VFL games since returning from injury.  Fits the mould of young, competitive and excellent skills.

SEN update

Angus Sheldrick (Sydney)

“He’s been a stand-out in the VFL since he got there, so the phone has rung a lot for him.

“He would have options if he explored a trade. He played two games in 2022, seven games last year, but didn’t get a look in this year and he had a nasty ankle injury and concussion.

“But he too is committed to staying for at least the final year of his contract next year.

“We can put a line through him for now.”

Ok … For now …

Dees definitely need to be one of the teams on the phone to his manager

Isn't he good mates with Blake Howse?

I'd love to know which games they were. In 2022, Spargo had 3 games where he got more than 15 possessions, and in 2023 he failed to get more than 15 possessions in any game.

As a comparison, a first year player in Windsor got more than 15 possessions in 9 out 19 games.

And you want to replace Windsor on the wing with Spargo?

Spargo is the most overrated player by Demonlanders.

Probably the reason why the Saints have pulled out of the Houston race.

Callaghan is a far more impactful player than Houston, plus has age on his side.

Look back over Gus' possession count for 2021. Spargo played the defensive wing. It was about covering and trying to provide an outlet going forward.

I want to use Spargo's aerobic capacity and his ball use, and maximise Windsor's damage as a half back ball user and line breaker. This is the compromise you have to make when you don't land Houston. We need faster and better ball users off half back.

I'd also like to give Windsor 2 or 3 CBAs occasionally to get him used to it.

Spargo got drop a few times in 2023 which means he didn't play the wing role to any good effect.

If you want him around the midfield then it's an inside mid where he excelled in his junior days.

If Finn Callaghan is even a bee's diaphragm chance of being available I'd be going full bore.

I sort of feel like Spargo's only chance to make it back into this team is as a high HFF essentially the Nibbler role. Like you I'd love to be able to utilise his kicking into the 50 ability but I just feel like he gets a bit lost when he's deployed on a wing.

Stanger things happen though, didn't think Gus had any business out wide before we tried it.

Yeah, Nibbler basically plays/played as a third winger, with a greater licence to join in on offence.

I don't think we want Spargo in the midfield rotation @dazzledavey36, I'd prefer we go after a Jagga Smith, who has moved into number 1 target spot for us IMO.

Play Charlie between high half forward, wing and deep forward. Charlie getting to the foot of contests like he did in 2018 and 2021 inside 50 made him a dangerous small. Needs to do the same again. I do have concerns about his fitness though given the long lay off. Let's hope he's back on the track soon.

I like Spargo because he doesn't waste it when he has the ball.  But I do remember him on the wing in a few games last year.  As a concept it makes sense and probably works with the right matchup - but I remember him getting beaten in the air, for pace and strength where he was a liability.  I think the role doesn't fit his strenghts.

Def agree re Windsor in at centre bounces - he looked very calm and composed in congestion this year which surprised me

As for backups (temporary possibly) Leek Aleer (GWS) Macrae and Caleb Daniel ( WB ) .

Hunter offers nothing and to a degree so those Chandler and Sparrow. Where does Spargo rate, anyone.

You do realise that those 3 all work together and that Taylor has a say in List Management? Also that recruiting doesn't stop at the draft.

Have I missed something?

We need to be upgrading both players ASAP, they are C grade role players who play 20+ games a year. If they both play a similar amount of footy in 2025 we're in real trouble

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
