The problem is, Petty isn't an AFL forward and never will be. He needs to go back to defence where he excels in reading the play and is very serviceable defender. He also looks so disinterested it isn't funny.

I watched him pretty closely on King's Birthday and he spent half the game limping to position with what looked to be a tender foot and a grimace on his face. If he isn't 100% right then they aren't doing him or the team any favours by continuing to play him.

I don't see either as forwards. A defensive forward is a negative move IMO, we have what, 2-3 of them. What we need are real forwards with forward craft, make the opposition chase us, not the other way around.

I think I am agreeing with you, my issue is that if what we assume to be the case is correct, Turner and Hooch (sorry Petty) are going to be playing as key forwards, we have essentially have named 5 key defenders against the Roos!
JVR is still young, but he seems to have good forward craft, and going missing could be as much to do with our delivery into the forward line than him not being the right player. He needs another key tall in there that does know the craft.  We just don't have anyone yet.

Just curious how we are $1.19 and the Roos are $4.45? (in from $7!). Whilst I understand form lines are not an exact science perhaps we could ponder the following.  North beat West Coast away and led the Pies by 54 points only to lose in controversial circumstances.  We were towelled by both the Eagles and Collingwood and now without arguably our best player. A case could easily be mounted that we are the most out of form team in the league. Not saying a win is impossible but at $1.19 no thanks. That is a market based on reputation.

I have no interest in Petty being dropped and wasting a talented player kicking off the dew at Casey.

However, I can't work why we're not playing him as a defender. A position where he clearly has more runs on the board at. Isn't the art of coaching is to get the best out of your players and play your players in positions they'll best excel at? Well, Goodwin sure as heck isn't getting the best out of a number players this year (ANB and T Mac a clear exception this year).

And why isn't Langdon being played predominantly on the wing? The position where he was talked about as an All Australian in 2021, and a position where his elite running helped out the defence one minute and then kicking clutch goals the next. What benefit are we getting from him being a forward where he's kicked 0 goals in the last 5 weeks? And correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't he playing wing during our solid 4-1 start to the season?

I went hard on north at $5.30 so I can pretty much guarantee they are no chance given my punting record.

To the ~gOoDwIn iS pLaYiNg fAvOuRiTeS~ crew, remind me of all these AFL standard players we have that are banging down the door at Casey?

9 changes from the 2021 flag 23 tomorrow, in jumper number order:

In: JVR, McVee, Windsor, Tomlinson, Howes, Chandler, Tholstrup, K.Brown, Turner

Out: Harmes, Petracca, Jackson, Lever, Spargo, Brayshaw, Hibberd, Jordon, B.Brown

8 of the 9 replacements have less than 50 games, 3 have less than 10, 5 have less than 20.

It’s definitely a factor

Our 23 profile for tomorrow is much closer to north’s than expected

That Petty would currently be a B-grader down back is an assumption, perhaps.  Discuss.

According to the stats and endless punditry, he is an F minus where he is at present. A B grader seems a substantial upgrade.

Let's stop with the TMac forward stuff. He is cooked as a forward, with many posters here reporting he has admitted to it himself. The only reason his career is alive is due to the move back, and he has been one of the few shining lights this season.

Unless the suggesting is that we actively tank.

What does inactively tanking look like?

Not that it's science either, but every single fox sports tipster has gone Melbourne and none are tipping the roos either.

Hey we’ve been favourites in every game all year

The punters know what they’re doing right??? Only lost half our games

I had an awesome collect on Freo ... $5.50 ... ridiculous odds.

It is really...

If someone is way off the boil then really what point gifting them games ? The argument sometimes is to play someone back into form. That hardly ever happens with us and certainly hasn't with Petty.

Much  better imo to play someone with 'some' ability who puts in and just maybe might grow.

They are the only two choices at the moment.

If A not working...  insane to continue

It's a shame we can't loan Petty out like in the premier league so he could play us and get back into form. We are the competition kings at playing an out of form opponent into form!!

Thanks for that - gave me a literal laugh out loud in the office!

That’s 8 players with under 50 games experience, and Bowey at 53, with 10 aged under 23 at the start of this month playing for us

Pretty young and inexperienced

I haven't looked at this games by experience stat in a while, but this is really interesting. I wonder if the low number of players between that 100 to 200 mark is causing some of our form issues? It's like we're heavy on top and bottom but nothing in the middle. Interesting to also note all the commentary about this amazing "young" Swans team yet they're the 3rd most experienced side playing this weekend (and not far off 2nd).

Ummm...

Doesn't this show our opposition to be even less experienced (and, accordingly, likely even younger)?

So, another little needle for should/must/please! win?

I did the unthinkable and tuned into the DeeBreif podcast this week. Absolutely excruciating listen 🗑

Thanks for putting that together. Makes you re-assess on where we are as a club at the moment, and whether we are actually still in the window. The media are always quick with this line "I can't believe where Melbourne are at the moment given their extremely talented list".

The outs emphatically outweigh the ins, although in fairness Trac and Lever would make our side miles better on paper, and JVR is a very good in, while McVee and Windsor have high end potential for the now and the future.

I won't be surprised if it's a reasonably even contest with North Melbourne tomorrow on that basis.

It was good when we were winning, gone off the rails in the past month. I haven’t managed to get through a full ep in a while.

It's the audio equivalent of a demonland post game thread haha

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.
