AFL Mid-Season Draft 2024

But surely we shouldn't be looking to draft for our Casey team. Whoever takes up an AFL list spot, should be expected to break into the AFL 23, rather than provide depth to our reserves side.

Yes and no, Dunstan was in some ways a very important recruit for us and I don't think he was ever really expected to play in the 22. It's more likely we will have a punt on a younger player we see upside in, but i don't think we'd be amiss to strengthen our seconds.

I guess I think we should target someone for the 23 and naturally they'll create depth at Casey.

I hope we go Voss. I wanted O'Sullivan last year, hope we get old mate.

Love Luka as a competitor hard as nails and would run through brick walls for you. Lateral movement and pace aren’t strengths, which I think may effect him at AFL level but he is only 18, could he be a Miochek, possibly in a few years.

Seen him play against my oldest all the way through junior footy and they played cricket together as juniors super kid who comes from a good well grounded family

Welcome Luker!

Got your boy @Pennant St Dee!

Luker Kentfield.  Definitely a project player.  Big key forward.  Good mark.  Skills are ok.  But needs to work on his movement.  I thought Noah Howes offers the same so perhaps a 50/50 call.

Likely Dees see BBB as done, Schache is done, Petty is 50/50 staying and Jeffo is still in development.  Need to have another young big forward option.

From Copilot search (from 2023 football):

Luker Kentfield is an exciting young talent in Australian Rules Football (AFL). Let me share some details about him:

  • Height: Luker stands tall at 194 cm.
  • Weight: He weighs 93 kg.
  • Age: At just 19 years old, he’s already making waves.
  • Club: Luker hails from the Carine Junior Football Club.
  • League: He plays in the Northern Conference of the WAFL (West Australian Football League).

Luker’s playing style combines versatility and strength. Here are some key points about him:

  1. Position: He’s a ruck-forward, which means he can dominate both in the air and around the goals.
  2. Experience: Despite flying under the radar, Luker has notable senior experience. He turned out for Subiaco’s League side in 10 games this year. He also earned a call-up to the state Under 18 side for three appearances.
  3. Strengths:
    • Aerial Ability: Luker excels in marking contests.
    • Contested Marking: He’s strong in one-on-one situations.
    • Conversion: When opportunities arise, he’s a reliable goal kicker.
    • Strength: His readymade frame allows him to hold his own against mature bodies.

While Luker has performed well in the WAFL’s top flight, the transition to AFL level will pose new challenges. Taller and more athletic opponents await, but his potential is undeniable.

In terms of stats, Luker averaged just six disposals, three marks, and less than a goal per game. However, his standout senior effort yielded four goals from eight touches and four marks.

Keep an eye on Luker Kentfield – he’s a rising star with plenty of promise! 🌟

His combine agility results would say this kid has athletic ability. Looking at his videos he looks like a lump of a kid. He looks strong yet has good agility/movement

Cooper Lord to the Blues.  Another of the young Sandringham Dragons 2023 premiership team to make an AFL list. Dragons are an absolute footy factory producing top players each year.

I’m surprised to see Collier-Dawkins not get picked. He’s shown good strong consistent form this year and against AFL listed competition.  Not sure why he missed out.

With the current state of the club’s injury list, I think consideration should be given to the field of players out there in the state league competitions to cover potential gaps in our lineup in the event of ongoing issues.

The one clear area where the Demons seem to have a vacancy is a ready made big man to cover the rucks if Max Gawn is injured or simply needs a rest for a week.

The recruiters really blew this. Had the opportunity to bolster ruck depth with a ready made state league ruckman. Instead picked a very raw tall fed who is a few years off. Serious questions need to be raised over our recruiting the last few years. It's damming when Goodwin admits there's no one at the club who will win hit outs against Jackson and darcy

Fair enough but we are also light on for quality tall forwards last time I checked. Oh you can add quick midfielders who can deliver the ball by foot accurately too if you like.

The reality is that this list needs a few gaping holes filled and our list managers and recruiting team need to really get to work over the summer.

If it was me I’d be parting ways with whatever type of player we think we have surplus of (HBF or small forwards) might be a starting point and get to work addressing these deficiencies - including the ridiculous lack of a genuine back up ruckman

Fullarton is not without skill and does do some reasonable things around the ground but he needs about 8-10 kilos on his frame to stand any chance of being a VFL or AFL ruck imho

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
