A rare insightful piece of analysis from the media in the form of this article from Rohan Connolly of ESPN.

Why the Demons can rise above off-field drama in 2024

Please note the siteโ€™s code of conduct continues to apply but otherwise discussion on the football aspect is most welcome.ย

Love RoCo!ย

Very well said.ย

It's not just because he's tipping us but because he understands what culture means in a club. Think back 12-15 months ago and Collingwood who had issues with De Goey and Ginnivan as well as ongoing off field issues with racism. The club dealt with those things while the playing group kept its eyes on the ball and played the game the way it should be played.

Concerned about culture? Think a club like North Melbourne with its many young players, the very talented player they just lost and the bloke who's coaching them. Good Lord!

Thanks RoCo for pointing out what we all know on here. Corn and his crew won't like it of course

Nice to see some 'balance' at last!

Unbelievably sensible article, always liked Rohan Connolly.

Great into and summary all in the first para:

"Nothing fuels media lust forย AFLย content like a good off-field controversy. Particularly when it's the off-season and there's nothing else to write about."

ย

It does also make me wounder about the weird commercial media landscape we now live in, when some of the only decent reporting comesย courtesy of an American sports channel / news outlet.

ย

Heโ€™s a proper journalist. Like Greg Baum. Theyโ€™re on the margins of mainstream sports journalism now, but only because they refuse to be part of the click-bait garbage media that gives brainless ex-footballers prime air and print time. Needless to say the Herald-Sun wonโ€™t be knocking on Rohan Connollyโ€™s door.ย

Thankyou Rohan Connolly, as always a great balanced article from an experienced journalist.

at last. some balance. and sense

you'd almost forgive him for being an Essendon supporter.

Boy some people are quick ย to throw stones out of the ย Glasshouse .ย Give it 5 years to test for some one like DGoey Sticks and Stones ย with him, itโ€™s only Names with Clarko. ย TT different ย of course.

By the time you go back a decade at least and your ego driven Ex Pres with his issues plus Maynardโ€™s thuggery you arenโ€™t exactly out of the โ€œwoods โ€œ just yet.ย

Still doesnโ€™t alter the fact that your fans are 75% feral so ย donโ€™t go shouting out this soon. ย

I'm beginning to realise that, just read the GameDay thread, it's Feral City.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
