Yes, but that doesn't matter.

The club made an investment. Plenty on here knocked it atm, but it was brilliant insight, and it won over most.

It engaged fans. 

 I went back and watched it again after we won the flag and found it fascinating all over again connecting the work the players did that created the foundation for our flag.

Its about the choice to make the investment. 

And besides I'm guessing alot of club's video content, like the giants one above, is done by outside contractors.

 

Appears most of our content is targeted towards social media and made by milennials!

Probably why most Demonlanders feel a bit left out 😀

With that said, there probably needs to be a better mix. Both short clips and longer feature stories. As mentioned, the Cody Weightman piece was outstanding on the Bulldogs website. Not everything needs to be under 60 seconds and made for TilTok!

 

Our media department all have ticktok brains. 1 minute videos with pegs, coins, forks, candles and Taylor Swift lyrics. Made for 8 year Olds. It's an insult too our intelligence.

How could it NOT be an open training session at Gosch's ? Casey not so much!

We have a scratch match every year and there are usually kids holiday programs anyway and open training sessions aimed at kids.

I think it's disappointing there is no single family day this year.

Yes it's chaotic and there are huge lines but the fact is the kids look forward to it.

The splitting up of the family day in three events doesn't really work IMO. Firstly, the Melbourne-Richmond game is 7 quarters of footy. I will go and watch it all but I don't think I can take my kids - it's not really reasonable to expect young kids to stand at Casey (presumably in the heat) watching 7 quarters of a practice match, with possibly the last 3 of those quarters not consisting of too many Melbourne players.

The training sessions in school holidays are not accessible to everyone, as lots of families will be away over the school holidays, in contrast to the usual family day in March when kids are at school.

As an adult it doesn't really bother me, but I think we've missed a trick here for the kids.

It’s wonderful for our most important fans… little Demons ♥️💙

They actually do have ‘closed’ training at Gosch’s on occasion. Player sponsors only invited, for example. Doesn’t really prevent anyone else from rocking up though.

By open session they mean players can be approached for autographs and photos. There’ll also be the usual kids’ activities, face painting etc.

Why has the club not communicated to member's and fans why the club has decided not to have a stand alone family day this year, something that is immensely popular among young fans and their parents? 

If the reasons WCW has noted above are accurate, why not communicate them to fans and members?

Instead all i can find about the family day is the short article on the MFC website WCW links above dated 31 January, with this headline, sub headline and opening two paragraphs (I'm not sure about others, but i didn't get an email with any info).

It will be easier than ever for Demon families to get their footy fix in 2024.

'MELBOURNE’s family day has been super-sized in 2024 to include three epic family events, kicking off with the Demons taking on the Tigers in the side’s first inter-club match simulation of the year. 

The Demon Family Series, presented by Beyond Bank, will feature events stretching from Casey Fields to Gosch’s paddock, making it easier than ever for Demon families to get their footy fix.

 

Personally  i find that disingenuous at best, dismissive of fans at worst. And i expect better from my club. 

I mean, c',mon ditching the super successful family day that people look forward to and claiming it has been super sized?

Super sized? What does that even mean? It certainly doesn't mean a bigger family day event with more free rides and activities.

What i assume they mean is they have split family day into 'three epic family events' that make it 'easier than ever for Demon families to get their footy fix in 2024'

C'mon, i get enough spin in advertising without my club trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. 

The three supposedly 'epic events' are:

  1. Demon Family Match Simulation at Casey Fields, with: seven-quarter match simulations (that little kisd wont sit through), signing opportunities (after the players have played 7 quarters of footy?), kids' activities and partner giveaways
  2. Demon Family Series April School Holiday Open Training at Gosch's Paddock or nearby location, with: players training (? like wow - they do that twice a week), signing opportunities (after the players have trained?), kids' activities and partner giveaways
  3. Demon Family Series July School Holiday Open Training, at Gosch's Paddock or nearby location, with: as above

Perhaps i'm out of touch as my kids are young adults now, but when say they were 6 or 7, it would have been a lost cause convincing my kids any of those 'events' were 'epic', let alone actually getting them to go.

And we had all three of those 'epic events' last year - in ADDTION to the family day.

Casey is total non starter for any one with little kids who lives anywhere but in the south.

Again, my kids are young adults, but i live in West and the thought of packing up two little kids into the car for a 3 to 4 hour round trip to watch seven quarters of footy at Casey and bounce on a jumping castle swaying in the Casey wind gives me cold sweats.

 

(To be clear WCW i'm in no way knocking you or the quoted post. And i'm not trying to make you a spokesperson or proxy for the club. 

I love how supportive of the club you are. You have worded your post in a really balanced way that provides the reasons behind the decision not to have a family day without dismissing legit concerns about that decision. 

I've quoted you because in relation to the focus of this thread - the clubs poor comms - your post is very useful in terms of highlighting my concerns about the club's comms to fans, and in particular to members )

All good. I guess I don’t notice the lack of communication from the Club to supporters because I’m made aware of these things as soon as they’re planned, since they’re events that involve the Demon Army, especially any kind of fundraising opportunity. But I realise it could be handled in a better way. 

Today's match sim gallery doesn't load properly on the MFC Android app. Seriously, displaying a gallery of images was a solved problem 30 years ago in HTML, it's pathetic!

COLLINGWOOD FAMILY DAY AND SEASON LAUNCH – FEBRUARY 14

 

We are pleased to inform you we will hold our annual Family Day and AFL Season Launch from 4.30pm on Wednesday, February 14 at the AIA Vitality Centre and we look forward to seeing as many Members of the Magpie Army attend.

 

Players will take part in an Intra Club match before the guernsey presentation of our 2024 AFL team together with representation from our women’s, wheelchair and second-tier programs.

 

Initially, we wanted to hold this event on the Friday however due to the number of people that will be in our precinct with the Taylor Swift and Matchbox Twenty concerts that night – we made the decision to hold our event earlier in the week.

 

We hope you recognise we want to ensure the best and safest experience for our Magpie Members and their families.

 

OPENING ROUND – MARCH 9

 

The Opening Round sees our Club kick off our season against the GWS GIANTS and we look forward to seeing the Magpie Army out in force at GIANTS Stadium. For fans based in New South Wales and for those travelling to the game, we look forward to connecting with you in Sydney.

 

AFL ROUND ONE + FLAG UNFURLING – MARCH 15

 

We cannot wait to see the Magpie Army fill the ‘G as we unfurl our 2023 Premiership Flag for the first time when we take on the Swans in Round One. There will be a hive of activity pre-game with a March to the G from the AIA Vitality Centre.

 

For Members based outside Victoria, we will host Watch Parties across the country allowing the Magpie Army to gather together in multiple cities across the nation.

 

FOOTBALL DEPARTMENT UPDATE

 

As we announced in December, Graham Wright will be taking a well-deserved break from March to September. This has allowed us to work through how our Football Department is set up and allocate responsibilities to key leaders within the department.

 

Working closely with Craig Kelly, General Manager of Football, Coaching, and Leadership Brendon Bolton will step up and oversee the men’s football program and be the point of call on key AFL matters.

 

Head of Football Strategy, Innovation and List Management Justin Leppitsch will take on additional responsibilities relating to list strategy which will see him work closely with the Club’s Head Recruiter Derek Hine on recruiting and list management.

 

General Manager Football Operations and AFLW Clare Pettyfor will continue to oversee the operations for both football programs.

 

Our recently appointed AFLW Head Coach Sam Wright has commenced in his role and has hit the ground running working closely alongside Head of Women’s Football Jess Burger on ensuring our women’s football program builds strong foundations for success ahead of the 2024 season and well into the future.

 

MEMBER AND SUPPORTER EXPERIENCE

 

Collingwood supporters are like no other – we show up, we cheer loudly and we help our athletes perform. In 2023, thanks to you, we were the most attended and most watched team in the AFL competition.

 

We know that while most people have a great time watching and attending the footy, there are areas we can improve on as a Club and we are working hard to ensure the best possible experience and engagement is available to all our Members and supporters across the country and the world.

 

Some initiatives we are working on behind the scenes in 2024 will lead to more insight and content from within our four walls, an improved match-day experience, improved membership support and new events for fans to share ideas and feedback.

 

For Members, we have listened to your pain points and we are working hard to eliminate hurdles and barriers when it comes to ticketing, access and general membership enquiries.

The club could really learn al lot from Taylor Swift...

Now they're probably not going to get an audience with her or her people but that could track her career from the start.

Her fan engagement was 2nd to none.

It's why she is so successful and has such a rusted on fan base.

Her talent of course helps, if she was a no talent no amount of fan engagement would help.

...but she did is so well.

We really are wasting a golden period for the club.

The management needs to be brought to account on this.

 

Media dept-  virtually non existent…..overall pathetic ……Pert should be made aware of our thoughts.  The worst year in modern times…..heads should roll.

    Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived.     Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
