After quietly spending his first year at the club in the background at Casey, McVee showed his talent in defence playing every game for Melbourne and claiming some big scalps.

And he'll be able to do that as he creates separation in a nanosecond, has excellent pace and good disposal

Lowering his eyes as a default move is a sign of real class

Agree with all above Judd McVee is the type of player that you want to have at your club. Quick thinking skilled individual that has both feet planted firmly on the ground and you just know he will continue to improve your side the longer he plays. Love the kid love the name.

I don't think we should be too concerned with our midfield depth as Sparrow is on the improve, Rivers is a real candidate and I can't get Kozzie's first half against Adelaide out of my head.  He lit it up that night.  

And watch out for Tholstrup.  He'll be pushing for selection

Clarrie will be back soon enough to join up with Petracca, Viney & Brayshaw but in the meantime, we can cover for him

McVee is a ripper and we got him out of good judgement again (Taylor)

I think we are already taking this bloke for granted such is his transition into best 22. Hard to believe he was a rookie pick. Has to be one of the great speculative recruitments we've made. 

Has looked like he belongs even when many of us, me included had no idea who he was and what he would bring when selected out of the blue.

You gotta wonder how a player of such undeniable talent can come so close to missing out on being drafted!

Would love to know what the issues were with his game because he is playing with skill, poise and an IQ that puts him amongst the best young players in the league.

I could be mistaken but think from memory injury and covid stopped him from playing any footy in his draft year. JT liked what he saw in the under 16s. 

You are correct - he had a bit of injury trouble, but he was U16 All Australian and one of WAs best players. He went to half back in his under 18 year and went into the year in 2nd round conversations. It’s not so much a out of nowhere pick, as a player who had dominated at times at the state level and at colts who had a bad under 18 year. 

and I also think it suits the narrative of our backline being unheralded or low picks. Howes was predicted to be 1st round, Rivers predicted first round (including as high as 10), Bowey went first round, same with Salem. And May and Lever. They just dropped a little lower than expected but there was no question on their talent or application.

This. JT has such a good eye for talent. 
It is one thing to get it right in the first round, but he repeatedly nails it in rounds 2,3,4 and even into the rookie draft. 
He is by far our biggest asset and should he ever think of leaving I would lock him at Casey fields and throw away the key.

it'd be pretty easy to argue that there's not a better small defender currently playing in the afl

his commitment to whole team defence and ability to use the ball so efficiently out of d50 makes him an absolute weapon

Simple, he has ball skills, awareness, foot skills and is a thinking footballer exactly what we need in the midfield to have a bit of polish to finish of the work.

true, but he's settled, playing great footy, and we set up to rebound defensively - which is why he's quickly become such a key player for us

Only because we don't have much young mid talent pushing for spots. That's why people wanted Rivers to play in the middle, but with Windsor that voice has died down.

Why pidgen hole players if we take your thinking Neita and McDonald would never have played forward,  Flower played HB and there is more of them, I would sooner a class finisher in the midfield because we have a lack of class there.

ANB, Sparrow and Rivers lack football awareness and tend to panic when they try to think things through they did it again last night, they are good when they take the first option and that's their strength.

but why change it when he's 30 games in and settled and a key part of our most important area?

it's not just about his excellent ball use for me; it's about how good he is defensively

Depends on how you view it so who goes out for Bowey, Howes has been excellent and not put a foot wrong, Mc Donald, River's who?

Salem moves back to midfield and Bowey slots back into the defense.

Salem will not play midfield all year does not have the tank for that he would blow out just like Kossie, Salem is only good for short bursts he foes not get involved enough for midfield.

he was set for midfield for the season prior to bowey being broken

The kid has massive upside and his current play is special. I trust the club will nurture him in the right direction and position. 
 

Just sign him up long term.
 

As a rookie listed player, is he a free agent at the end of a contract?
