    Agh, another classic Blusterdome game. I used to be all "both teams have to play in the conditions, so you take it as it is". But with the gap in skills this team has on most opponents it's more and more of a shame that we play so often in the football equivalent of a spin cycle. Yes, a bunch of those goals missed should have been slotted (and this is something we won't always get away with and need to tighten up). It's the around the ground stuff that I find frustrating, as the conditions don't reward skill or superior ball movement so much as "kick and hope" footy. We'll still typically rise above it, and play the conditions smart. And there'll always be games affected by the weather. But I hate that 90% of the time, playing at our home ground means our team won't get to practice its full potential.

    All that aside, we did what we needed to do, 4 points, no obvious injuries, and as it turns out, all but sealing $1 mil.

    That goal from B.Mack was all class and the highlight of the day for me. I want to watch the replay for a couple of Heater tackles I saw from a great distance but need to experience with a better view as a 50 game celebration. Liked Gall's game and look forward to seeing more of her. Fitzsimon had a real purple patch at one point putting on immense forward pressure with numerous repeat efforts.

    Matchday experience: Nearly lost a few camp chairs and I swear a half-full bag of potato chips I dropped blew a good 10m away before I could catch up to it. Everything was at the right volume (Dees Army loud, PA system reasonable), so that was a plus.

    We capitalised on our chances and should have kicked plenty more. Blustery conditions made for a poor contest. 
     

    Casey is the worst place to have to travel to. I know I probably sound like a broken record, but the joint is a joke. Took me over an hour from Malvern to get there. A grass fire on the freeway and then the road into Casey was bumper to bumper, as usual. The wind was gale force. The lines at the only two food outlets meant you missed a whole quarter of the game waiting to get food. The view at the ground is poor. The only good view is on the members side we’re the small section of seats are, which are always given to away team family and friends. The nets behind the goals make it hard to see from the cheer squad area.

     

    After yet another negative Casey experience, our family has vowed that we will not return to watch anymore football there. Men’s practice matches or AFLW.

    Think we should put that game down to bad day but with the points. There were times especially in the 2nd quarter that they looked a little disinterested.

    You were there, KITP. Surely you agree that the wind was off the charts, even by Casey standards. And it wasn’t a predictable wind, either, nor was it on and off. It was relentless. We had a few posters and a couple touched on the line. I thought given the horrid conditions we did really well scoreboard-wise.

    No, I said moved from the midfield where her lack of contested strength and pressure were being exploited. We’ve been a better side since she’s playing wing and now high half forward

    Great crowd.

    Very windy up there too but the ground has stands and is an amphitheater so it is somewhat protected. And the game is better for it. 

    I've said it before and i'll say it again the AFL should only play AFLW games on AFL standard grounds with stands that provide protection from the wind.  

    I understand the logic of playing our home games at Casey in terms of continuing to grow our connection and fan base in the south east. And there is no question that area has really embraced the women's team. 

    So perhaps always have a  4-5  games there in a full 17 game season (ie each team plays each other once, which is the ideal system i reckon), but the rest of our home games - and as many games against other vic based teams as possible (eg as part of what i have suggested as a weekly Friday night game there) - should be at Princess Park.

    They routinely draw comparatively  large crowds to matches at the various venues in their state, as does Adelaide in their state.

    5,722 in attendance today.

    4-5 games at Casey is 4-5 games too many, imo. I can’t think of a single reason to play home games there. You suggested the connection with and the growing of our game in the South East. If that’s the only positive, it’s not good enough.

    As for a 19-round season, it won’t be ‘til 2027 that we’ll have a 17-round season (all teams play each other once). Next season there’ll be 11 rounds and most likely 12 rounds the year after.

    and if they can't win i hope they can keep it tight so crows don't get any percentage gain

    Mmm, they said on the call of the game that that region is Australia's fastest growing are for population. I think it is smart to keep investing in the region and looking to cement that area as demon territory. 

    it has been a long term strategy, and in my opinion after being a doubter, i think very smart one,

    The only way to remain competitive over a long period is to have big number of paid up members and a strong fan base.

    And the only way to achieve both is to bring in new supporters and build the base.  The Casey connection is helping us achieve both and the popularity women's team is no doubt a big factor.

    North badly need a quality key forward to finish off their good work. If they had one they would be a contender. they have all the other components. you just know crows are going to score a goal and win this despite being on the bad foot all this last quarter

    On the bright side Crows percentage back to 196. Thats 64% behind us. We just need to beat the Lions as Crows won;t catch us on percentage even though the Crows will pulverise the Eagles in their last game.

    The Roos should have had a kick to win after the siren 25 meters out directly in front.

      The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

    • REPORT: Port Adelaide

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

    • CASEY: Essendon

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
