ANG13 2,110 Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 The obvious and more than likely answer is no. But the AFL competition is the most even it has been in my life and next year will probably be more so again. This year there were four different teams in the finals, one of the teams that missed out was last year’s premiere’s the runners up only got in on the back of a massive mistake by North Melbourne. So it could have easily been five different teams in the finals. Next year GC, Adelaide, Fremantle and the Bulldogs will all go into the season thinking they can and probably should make finals. Hawthorn, Essendon and North will all more than likely be harder to beat and cause a few more upsets next year. As the competition gets more even the luck or fairness / unfairness of the fixture will really play a part on the ladder. We have a very strong list but have our weaknesses and they need addressing if not I think there is a chance we miss finals next year. My biggest concern for us next year is the psychology of the group, they worked so hard through the season to give themselves a chance at redemption only to provide one of the biggest choke’s in modern AFL. 1 1 Quote

Swooper1987 3,322 Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Only two teams beat both Grand Finalists this year - Hawthorn and us. We were incredibly close. We aren't losing anything other than depth and we should be a better side with the natural improvement of our younger players. I think top 4 again. 5 1 Quote

Agree I used to like the Alice Springs game for example but securing the 4 points is now more important. For the same reason avoiding games at Kardinia Park and Tasmania are essential. I wonder who will be Gold Coast's Darwin bunny next season. This year it was the Bulldogs who lost in Darwin and lost the following week. Those two losses were crucial as it turned out. 1 1 Quote
Lexinator 1,931 Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 I think the difference is that thesedays we look to be an established good side now, both on and off field, which has taken a long time to achieve. Sure, we had some good teams between flags but it's different right now. People will come and go, naturalny we will fluctuate but the difference will be, we will more likely to be relevant and within striking distance of a flag. The comp is too even thesedays to replicate multiple, successive flags. IMO our list is in good shape, given our fringe players are mostly startup players in other teams and the fringe players have improved over several years, we have the luxury to get 'needs' based players for a while. It's also great to see the AFLW team dominating, think there is a bit of bridiging between good side to happen there still, so I reckon we are likely to see another 'golden age' with them, I can see multiple flags coming our way, regardless of AFL or AFLW sides. Gee, we were up to our eyeballs this season, few better execution of skills in the finals and a bit of luck with injuries we'd have another! But, we're in a good sweet spot for sustained success and personally happy to have seen an AFL and AFLW flag when I thought I'd never see one gives you some perspective and appreciation. Go Dees, bring on '24! 1 1 Quote
MrFreeze 2,055 Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 (edited) I think the idea of a dee dynasty with Max winning multiple premierships is likely gone. But winning back to back or multiple premierships in 5 years was a dream anyway. With our current draft capital and list management, we will be locked in the top 8 for a long time to come. Dr. Gonzo 24,468 Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 We need a replacement for May but I think he'll be playing at a high level for a couple more years at least. Gawn is an interesting one, when he's on he's one of the most important players in the comp. But ruckmen are typically the easiest position to replace and you don't need an elite one to compete. Gawns strength is his around the ground marking. Petty and JVR coming on should improve our window, we may have to transition to a more attacking side if we dont find a great May replacement? The picks we got from the Jackson trade could really set us up, we need to nail this draft and have the capital to do so. 5 1 Quote

Our best quarters have been the last. I think our inaccuracy no particular game time. We were one if the fittest teams this year. So why do you ask the question? 2 Quote

Go Dees, bring on '24! I don't fully buy the competition is even mantra, just 3 years ago Richmond won their third. Go back 5 more years and ditto Hawthorn. The reality is that we thought, and with good reason, that after 2021 we were a chance for the next dynasty. We are still a chance to win another one in the next 2 years, but the dynasty is all but gone. 1 Quote

Gosh, we looked so good! Gutted we didn't make it again this year! Quote
