little paper sais that the talent coming out of wa this year is threadbare: https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/draft-wipeout-fears-talent-pathways-wont-cater-for-19-clubs-as-wa-could-prove-canary-in-coal-mine/news-story/73764be1b4e8b785efebf126e7444cfb

Western Australia is bracing for its worst ever national draft as fears escalate that the country’s talent pathways will not be capable of producing enough elite players for 19 AFL clubs.

Several clubs say there is currently not a single West Australian they would select while Tasmania struggles to consistently develop AFL talent. WA typically produces about 16 per cent of the draft pool and had 14 players selected last year.

But that is set for a dramatic fall in a year where Fremantle holds three first-round selections and West Coast is likely to have a top-four pick.

“There’s not enough draftable players for 19 clubs,” one recruiting expert said.

“I don’t think there will be a West Australian legitimately drafted this year – that’s how bad WA is at the moment. It’s the worst year for talent they’ve ever seen.

“There’s not enough kids for 18 clubs at the moment. Some of that could be because kids never got the games into them during Covid. But WA didn’t have lockdown like Victoria did.”

Cant wait to raid Freo's talent in a few years time. Assuming they use all their pics on Vic talent.

Yze not selected

Which is not a surprise at all. He's form isn't at level where I'm sure he'd like it to be.

I do know he was told by the club at the end of last year that he's not guaranteed a spot on the list at all unless he improves the fundamentals of what the club has mapped out for him.

Wouldn't be surprised if we do overlook him if he doesn't improve his form.

Not for this draft but evidently (according to BF) Aaron Davey's son is dominating school football in Melbourne.

I think he is around 14 years old. No doubt the club is monitoring and supporting. I think that is why the AFL is seeing more FS's. Clubs are identifying early and putting more time and resources in.

Attention Administrators : next interview with Jason Taylor can we please get an update on FS's.

That's exciting. I figured since Alwyn's son was already drafted, that Aaron's kids hadn't made it.

That was my post on BF.

A friend of mine down Melbourne was watching his young fella go up against Marley and he text me straight after the game saying the kid is a genuine freak.

Kicked 6 goals playing as a half forward midfield.

A lot of development still to go but the signs are good so far.

Hayden Young would be the one I’d love to pinch back, but he looks pretty settled at Freo.

I have heard whispers a few clubs including us may be keen on Hamish Davis with a late pick (3rd/4th round).

Played as (medium size) key forward last season at PSA and WAFL, however been playing HHF, wing and inside midfield roles this year. Good tank, decent size for that fwd/mid role and can impact the scoreboard. Plenty of development there and has the right attitude

His stats at Colts level look pretty impressive.

Last weeks Coates League player of the week was Gippsland Power captain Xavier Lindsay.  Had 32 disposals in the midfield, with high efficiency, using his left foot deadly disposal.  He had the good mix of skill, smarts and athletic ability.  Lock him in as a future star.

Pretty darn settled by the look of it, contracted till end of 27.

Last season he was known to go the oval on Friday arvo at Hale school every week and not leave until he’d have 100 set shots. Think he could be a late developerp

AFL Draft: 56 prospects to watch at this year's National Championships

Thanks W_J hopefully we will be in a position to pick up some of this excellent talent this year. I think that we need to clear a few list spots at years end.!!

Crows and Blues definitely would be happy.
Tyler Welsh is almost ready to go for 2025.
Camporeale brothers will be drafted early and matched by the blues.

JT. MEMO. URGENT

GET DEES SOME MIDFIELD TALENT.  THREE URGENTLY NEEDED TO REFRESH AND REBUILD

Mids in the draft

Finn O'Sullivan - Goes pick 1-2

Levi Ashcroft - Bris father son

Jagga Smith - Goes pick 3-4

Josh Smilie- goes probably pick 3-4

Tom Gross - maybe pick 6-7

who could be within our range ?
Pick 8-10

Christian Moraes - Eastern
Sid Draper- sth Adelaide

Pick 11-14

Zak Johnson - Northern
Taj Hotton - Sandringham
Xavier Lindsay - Gippsland
Sam Lalor - GWV

Pick 17-18

Kade Herbert - SA Eagles

Harvey Langford - Dandenong

that’s 9 likely mids that on current draft range, could be within our draft fishing net.  We need one of these. I have starred a few preferences

Then somehow trade second and third round picks OR a future first 2025 draft pick TO get another 2024 first rounder.  LIONS would be interested as they need points not picks.

OR find a gem in the second round or third round- like how others picked Chad Warner or Rory Sloane type who goes under the radar.  From the oakleigh v eastern game in April , Zane Cochrane  or Patrick Retschko ️(oakleigh) are two such players, as well as Cody Anderson (Eastern)

Three mids please JT.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
