McAdam is probably competing with Smith, Chandler, Spargo and Laurie for the last two slots - I'd fancy him ahead of that group.  Maybe AMW or even Sestan will surprise and jump up the order.

But Melksham was only playing because all our key fwds and Fritta were injured.  He played outstanding when he wa in and couldn't be dropped.  But had Fritta been playing i doubt Melk would have even got an opportunity.

I love the idea of a smaller forward line with Fritta, Petty, JVR, McAdam/Smith, Koz, Chandler, Spargo etc.

So much of the AFL game is based off speed and the ability to move the ball quickly off turnover. We need guys who have athletisim and pace to transition quickly. McAdam certainly adds to our hopefully more dynamic forward line in 2024.

Agree, but i don't see him ahead of those no.  Chandler, Spargo and AMW are the three for the last spot.  it will be a pressure fwd/high HF role which goody loves.

unless they are changing the fwd structure, which after a last few years of conversion and connection issues, could be possible.  

Don't mind the price we paid.

He's someone that can come in straight away and have a significant impact. If I jury he's capable of kicking 30 plus goals.

Kossie: Average tackles: 4.0, Average Tackles inside 50: 2.0
McAdam: 3.3, 1.4
Fritsch: 1.6, 0.6

McAdam is more than twice a good as Fritsch in this area and closer to Kossie figures.

Fritta yes JVR no don't know much about the new recruit, if the forward line can function as it should you can play both Melk won't be there and I hope kossie watch Hill, Elliot and Greene play the small man like in 21 it's a bonus.

There's two spots available for that group to make up 7 forwards.  McAdam's tackle and i50 tackles are superior to both Chandler and Spargo.

I like this move because we need small forwards who can score. Just providing pressure isn't enough

I’m confident McAdam will be in the 23 if he’s fit and providing decent forward pressure. As long as he chases and tackles at a similar level to someone like Chandler he has more attacking talent.

But we probably have to play Fullarton or J Smith for a fair chunk of the season to keep Gawn, Petty and JVR healthy. If they even stay healthy! 

It’s a lot to give up and I’m not saying it’s his only role but I reckon McAdam could be a really handy sub at times too. An impact forward who can contribute deep or up the ground is a much better weapon off the bench than most of our choices.

Still missing a 2nd ruck. I think we might see Fullerton come in and Petty or Smith play back.

I did actually reference my acknowledgement of Tim Lambs suggestion  to the contrary .

If I could be bothered mounting any further defence I would suggest it was to counterbalance the repeated assertions in discussions here about Petty and Melksham being automatic "ins " for the forward half,with no timeline included.

PS here's hoping  they are and thst it works

pps  Mihocek and Sidebottom would fit in nicely as well.

 

With only 7 games (inc 1 subbed off) in 2023, all this is of course averages;

Positive;

- About half his touches are score involvements; would be behind only Petracca/Oliver/Fritsch/Pickett per game from last season.

- Led the crows for tackles inside 50, which would be behind only Pickett for us.

- Behind only Taylor Walker for marks inside 50 at the Crows. Only 0.04/game behind our leader, Fritsch.

- Was remarkably consistent when he got a run at it for five games in a row to finish the season, kicking ten goals including at least one in every game.

Negative;

- Very low possession count. Under ten a game on average for 2023 and career. Not everyone has to be an accumulator but in the context of us having several low-possessions forwards and half-forwards already, it is a drawback.

Tackles are 1 part of it, its pressure acts, link up play ect. and he may be more than Fritsch but it won't be by much which is my point.

Agree, but this is what he hasn't been able to do thus far in his career.  Maybe everything aligns and he is happy and that's all he needs to go to the next level.

Thats my point, Chander and Spargo don't play the I50 role, so i doubt McAdam takes that spot.

Pretty sure he won't have to change guernsey number!

What hasn't had a lot of mention to date is that Shane McAdam averaged 5.3 score involvements, which would rank only behind Kozi and Fritsch from our forwards who each averaged 5.9 score involvements. Having forwards who can not only kick goals but create scoring opportunities seems to be the key here to help with that forward-half connection issue. 

This would be a similar reason it would be good to pick up Jack Billings on the cheap this year as depth (st kilda paying most of his salary). He is a high score involvement player. Could do much worse and would help

I’m betting it’ll be Macka. Deakyn Smith once told me that when it comes to nicknames “about 40 suggestions fly around before they land on the most obvious.” In his case it ended up being “Deaks” but probably only because “Smithy” was already taken.
