Natanui said to be contemplating retirement....

West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett won’t seek a contract extension beyond next year but expects Adam Simpson to remain as coach of the AFL club.

The long-time Eagles boss also confirmed that cult figure Nic Naitanui could join veterans Shannon Hurn and Luke Shuey in retirement.

The 33-year-old Naitanui, who is contracted for next season, has been sidelined for all of 2023 after managing just eight games last year.

“I’m sure he’s weighing up his future as we speak because it’s a long, long journey back (from his achilles injury) and he knows that,” Nisbett told SEN Radio in Perth.

For completeness, former players Fischer McAsey (Adelaide) and Jason Castagna (Richmond) who announced their retirements before the start of the season, have been added to the list.

If I didn't know these guys were (now former) footballers, with names like these I would have thought they were protagonists in a US TV crime show with Fischer McAsey being the cop and Castagna part of a New Jersey crime family.

Fisher McAsey sounds like he needs a proctologist.

Jack Riewoldt (Richmond) is the latest veteran to announce his departure from AFL.

I never warmed to him but acknowledge that he had an excellent career.

I'd take him as a rookie pick.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
