A player doesn't get a pass for playing poorly because they've just had a child, that's ridiculous.

LOL if this actually was an accepted excuse. Unless of course Geelong players are the human equivalent of seahorses. Short of that, the dog ate my homework would be a better excuse.

Well… maybe if they are an AFLW player we could give them a pass

I was just about to remark about the lack of internet in the Geelong area, but I think they got a govt grant for that…

What's the bet they use that grant to build an oddly shaped internet?

Elvis and I were just discussing this very topic as we were browsing Demonland.

They were very slow putting up their 'Preview' thread - only went up Monday morning but they played the previous Thursday...

...so maybe you are right about the lack of internet down there.🤨

As an aside I laughed and laughed re the comment that the noise, post goals interupts their reading/knitting time!!

They do appear to have more female supporters than most other clubs.

No doubt but knowing them they will probably draft some 195cm guy from Otway who will kick 40 next year.

They must be hiding him on a farm just like Wet Toast and Adelaide have done before. The cows will miss him.

I thought it was "Tax payer Park". My bad.

Currently 6th in the goal kicking with 34.
Will go around again for sure.

I think it says more about the young guns who are/can be very inconsistent (see Curnow and McKay, even the King brothers).

Surely Hawkins is also close to retirement. Once you remove that second threat forward, it becomes easier to defend against Cameron.

I keep waiting for Hawkins to drop off and leave a huge hole in their side, but he seems almost phyically immortal at this point.  Surely there's a big hamstring tear and or a bunch of soft tissue injuries sometime in the next couple of years that at his age his recovery will be slow and impactful on his performance?

I don't think I wish ill on the guy personally, as I actually admire how well he's been able to play for so long, but in the interests of fairness to the competition with respect to him propping up Geelong's performance and keeping them compeditive, I do hope the end on his career is near.  Boomer Harvey was similar.   Maybe the AFL should bring in a mandatory retirement age.

And you can add that Geelong have done exceptionally well out of the father-son talent pool, too. Not just Hawkins, but also Ablett (x2) and Scarlett. And they've had others, too, who were not quite in the same stratospheric league, but nevertheless quite handy, such as Mark Blake. In terms of real success we've had Viney (and arguably Barassi), and that's it.

I'm hoping this generation of players will provide a few decent father sons in the years to come.

He's done very well playing T this level and at his age.

I'm still gobsmacked by Fletcher s effort. I remember doing a fun run at 40 and wondering how in the world this bloke played afl at close to that.

You do have to admire players who continue to add to there game even as they get older.

Playing Afl at 40 is just Herculean.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
