  • Demonland changed the title to PODCAST: Mid Season Review 2023

Thanks boys for all of your efforts on the Podcast so far this season. This is my favourite Demon's podcast and is a must listen each and every week. The longer the better. It is the highlight of my week. Yes I do have a life but I travel a lot for work and having you guys along for the ride makes the kms fly by.

I would love to get the panels thoughts on which player has been the surprise packet of the year and conversely which player has not lived up to expectation (doesn't have to be negative - can be as a result of injury etc)?

The podcast has gone to another level this year. My sincere thanks to all involved. Each of you bring something different to the table and it is very clear that a lot of time and effort goes into the format and analysis.

If you have time I would love to get your thoughts and opinions on our run home? What are the danger games and are you concerned that our potential lead in to the finals could be deemed as "soft" with games against Adelaide (if they still can't win out of SA), Richmond (if finals are out of their reach), North in Tassie (is our Tassie hoodoo over), Carlton (hopefully blind freddy will see they are tanking by then), Hawthorn (just lay down for us this time you've got nothing to prove) & the Swans (hopefully they are not playing for their coach's swansong)?

Keep up the great work. LOVE LOVE LOVE the podcast.

I'll echo these statements and say the podcast has gone to a new level this year. It's currently the only one I listen to.

I don't have anything to suggest out of the ordinary that you won't be doing already eg grading our performance thus far or grading forward, mid and back groups etc.

Maybe which player is the midyear B & F, which player is the mid year 'coaches award' or best improver so far and who  has been most underwhelming.

hey DEMONLAND FAMILY i am relatively NEW to the podcast having been recommended to listen a few weeks back by a lovely lady near the DEMON ARMY cheersquad. this is my first message on this website and I want to relay my thanks and gratitude to you 3 for your considered analysis and the use of stats to paint the bigger picture that can sometimes be hazy in all the emotions of GAME DAY. the wins can be euphoric and the losses can be soul crushing but I have found that listening to your dissections of the matches in the past few weeks have given me a greater appreciation of the games and have made me realise that it's a long season and we're playing the long game. so thank you for your efforts to bring comfort after a loss and of course to celebrate all the wins along the way.

oh I forgot to ask my question:

I have heard you speak about us adjusting our gameplan slightly this year but as I'm relatively new here and not very analytical when it comes to how I watch games I would like a little bit of an explainer about what you've noticed about our tweaks to the gameplan. correct me if I am wrong and apologies for any ignorance but I have seen a shift from us playing predictable down the line footy, which did work for us in 21, to us taking the game on more by taking risks in using the corridor. I know it's not as simple as that and there is probably a lot more that my untrained eye is missing so can please enlighten me so that the next time I'm at the footy or probably more accurately at the pub I can pretend that I know what I am waffling on about.

thank you for you time. keep up the stellar job guys.

Wondering who the panel thinks will be our biggest threats for the Flag this year? It's looking likely that the Pies, Port and Brisbane will be Top 4 given the Pies current record and Port and Brissy's home ground advantages.

Are any of the teams currently (at time of writing) in the bottom part of the 8 a threat for our Flag (yes OUR FLAG) currently Saints, Bombers, Adelaide and Dogs?

What about the Teams currently sitting outside the 8? Currently Cats, Dockers, Suns and perhaps the Tigers. Any concerns for those sides?

Excellent Podcasts as always fellas. Keep punching them out. Go Demons.

As promised, Andy, here is my question from the Collingwood Podcast thread, but relevant to the Geelong game.

Do we think we'll allow +1 at contest against Geelong? In the Collingwood game, we evened this up in the final quarter.

@Lucifers Hero has pointed out before the +1 that we allowed last time against Geelong.

Do we allow it for 3 quarters or even most of the match, and tweak it if necessary?

My question

Are we loading this year. ?

were we loading last year ?

doesn’t every side do a similar loading pattern.   If they do doesn’t that make it all equall ?

does it work ?

Being 3rd on the ladder is a great start and the notion that we are building to playing our best football at the backend of the year is excellent.. what has to 'click' in order for us to play our best? And is our best the best?

In the mid season review I would be interested in the perspective of the team on the broader competition.

Do you think the current top 4 are the teams in contention and will remain unchanged?  How important is a top 2 finish considering Port and Brisbane would be tough road trips in finals?

Given it is related to our drafting position, what do the team think the likely finish will be for an improving Fremantle side?

I'll second the Big Love for the podcast. All three of you offer a great insight into both our wins and losses. It's essential listening for me each week and a break from the so called experts in the media. Thanks for your hard work and dedication in preparing and producing the podcast each week.

We've had 3 debutants pull on the Red and Blue Guernsey this season and all three have had an impact. Love to get the panel's thoughts on Brodie Grundy, Lachie Hunter and the Juddster.

Are we likely to see another debutant before season's end and if so who will it be?

Maybe one for the end:

If Binman were stuck on a desert island with only a Record turntable/CD Player with power available and the choice of only 1 album to have with him, which album would that be? 🙂

Looking forward to the Pod.

Keen to hear the panels thoughts on which players might get a game in the run home that we haven't seen yet in 2023 (debuts or otherwise).

If time permits, I'd also like to know what everyone considers to be their best 22 for finals. Are we resting BBBB in the VFL as per 2021? Does someone like Harmes get a gig if he's in form? Can all of Rivers, McVee, Bowey, Salem and Brayshaw play in the one side when its crunch time?

We have attended all home games to date and although we have had some convincing wins others have been less so. The Pies win was exhilarating but we seem to be holding back at times, where are we going to find that extra improvement that will enable us to win the prize.?

Hi Andy

You asked  me to repost this for the mid season review so here we are with a couple of modifications, although it was answered to a certain extent last week.

Your thoughts on this as a potential forward line going into the future, not just next week but  beyond BBB and TMac.

JvR because he is a developing champion

Petty because Goodie has made it clear that’s where he wants him, pre knee Tomo may be back and gives us two solid talls up front

Fritsch because he is a goal machine

Kossie because he’s Kossie

Now it gets harder:

I love Chandler and think he is an intelligent player. I love Spargo’s delivery inside but given Smith can play fast and small as well as tall, one of them out for him. This also fits with our small forward roles as pressure first, goals second.

So I see it as possibly JVR, Petty, Fritsch, Smith, Kossie, Chandler. Spargo as first drop and Schache as tall backup.

Alternatively Smith could be permanent sub given his flexibility.

Thoughts?

Thanks guys - the 3-hour loading podcast last week was great. I'm sure you guys will be delivering explosive podcasts from Round 20 onwards 😁

We saw teams adopt specific strategies as a way to counter Melbourne's game plan. This included:

  1. Stronger use of the corridor,
  2. Short and quick 15-20 metre kicks to allow transition (by hand or foot) beyond Melbourne's defensive zone, and
  3. When we kicked long to a contest, spoiling the ball long / well clear of the contest to circumvent our crumbers and contested ball winners.

Geelong used all three to great success in our Round 17 game last year. Over the first 13 rounds we've seen what the Dees response to these strategies from 2022 has been, with particular success in our wins against the Swans in Round 3 and the Pies in Round 13. We seem to have developed a counterstrategy to how teams beat us in 2022. Go fast and we can beat you, go slow and we will definitely beat you.

Given this, have you seen anything in our losses this year that suggests we're susceptible to a new strategy or gameday tactic? Was there anything about how Essendon and Port moved the ball against us that causes you concern?

Sorry for the long question, and thanks for the continued high quality content you gents produce! 😊

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
