During my illness and consequent insomnia - just a bad cold apparently - I have picked 2 teams of my favourite 'Fair and Talented' players, and a list of the players I considered brutal thugs.

Saints:

Alan Johnson, Silvagni, Roos

F,. Davis  Knights, Barry Davis

Grieg Petracca Flower

Davey Hart Rioli - either M. or C.

Farmer Quinlan, Daicos- dad.

P.Farmer, Goodes. Garry Wilson.

INt: Alves, Jeff White, Woewodin, John Shultz, Wanganeen

Thugs:

Ayres, Andrews , Wallis

Granger ( Port Adelaide) Jess, Hardwick

Rhys Jones, Williams, Dimma

Brereton, Merret, Hodge

Hocking, Lockett, Hall

Scott, Byronia Pickett Matthews

Int: Balme, Selwood, Mclean, Mal Brown, Sheedy, Clarkson

Dave Granger, who had one of the all-time great nicknames of "Grave Danger"!

Are Dimma and Hardwick the same guy?

Or is that Dipper?

Yes: one of my remaining 3 brain cells is too clogged up: The Big Dipper, indeed.

Dipper was a true gentleman off the field. Went to school with him. A monster guy even then but carried himself with dignity and grace. Protected the small kids and school bullies and toughs feared him. Allan Jeans turned him into a football thug. Actually Allan Jeans should be on the thug list as well.

Can't agree with Goodes, he was a consistent tribunal visitor and had a penchant for tripping

You didn't go to Kew High by any chance?

Our own Rodney Balls Grinter would be disappointed.

And Big Carl

Missed the biggest of all, the one and only Robbie ‘Mad Dog’ Muir.
Knew Dipper due to work, nice guy, always had time for and interest in the less celebrated.

I’d put Chris Judd up there for his history of sniping and eye gouging. Stealth thug.

Big Carl

Saw him play his last ever game when I was a kid, and he only had one purpose for being out there - to thump as many people as he could. Most openly violent game I’ve ever seen from any player. Remember feeling embarrassed that he was playing for my team.

Tom Hafey king hit a bloke at Shepparton according to my Dad. So much for mythologising. Kevin Sheedy would be an ‘acolyte’, Dean Wallis was definitely no angel.

Embarrassed !! Are you kidding ? I was there & it was against Collingwood & I'm only sorry he didn’t clean up more of the snipers.

Yes ..was going to suggest he was on the wrong team..    a bit of a sniping dog if you ask me.  And totally unecessary as a very gifted player.

Always played with niggle.

It annoyed/s me he tarnished the Charlie ... imho.

Take away the rubbish play...maybe... but it was there plain as day.

Steven Baker gotta be the tagger.  He was suspended for 28 games in his career.

Retired from AFL, then got suspended for 6 weeks for rough conduct in a preseason game for Sorrento!

Had to be de-registered from all forms of football but he won his appeal.

Carl looked after his charges.

Max could channel him a bit .. imo

I think he was reported for 8 different incidents. Never heard what the (theoretical) suspensions would have been, or even if they bothered. Great player otherwise, not a fan of the baldy-hiding headband though.

Dipper ...nice guy ... ?

Maybe off the field... he and lethal ...   two nastiest [censored] ever in the poos and wees jumper.

If you saw as i did what they did to Flower, effectively off the ball you havd no hesitation running either of the [censored] over.

A mate of mines sister was very good friends with Muirs girlfriend.  Got asked to fix a few holes in walls.  Total nutter

If he did and avoided suspension, he would be unstoppable.

Jimmy Stynes in the Saints?

One of the fairest players I've had the chance to see.

Yep, I had him in the team at 3am but at 4pm today he had slipped  my tiny moind. He's a definite IN, instead of Goodes...

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.
