Not bad at all at this time of year. Lions have lost most of their finals at the Gabba over the past five seasons, all games being under lights at night. Our win last year was at night, we barely fumbled all night - compare that to Round 2 this season - it’s as if the games took place at two different locations.

I think posters might be underselling the difficulty of playing Port Adelaide in Adelaide in a week 1 final.

I agree that Brisbane at the GABBA is probably the tougher proposition but Port in front of a hostile territory with Rozee, Butters and JHF potentially at their devastating best isn't exactly beer and skittles.

Furthermore, our Adelaide oval record hasn't been good this year, compared to prior years, albeit both games have been wet.

If we're not finishing second, let's finish 4th.

Best game for us week one...  Pies at the G...    I have distinct trepidations about the other scenarios

Pies at the G would cause some serious heartburn around here. Could you imagine, you’d have #binman rolling out the stats of why we can’t lose followed by #jimmygadson dialling in from Europe about the impending disaster. Then you’d have #dazzledavey swinging hay makers at anyone who disagreed. Poor old Andy would be deleting posts and sending emails like a crazed woman putting on lipstick. All the while I’d be certain of victory.

We must win 1 game to ensure  4th

 

First, we need to at least win one more.

While I agree an MCG final v Collingwood is probably preferable to an interstate final, the consequences of a loss to Collingwood (1v4) will likely be far more significant than a loss against Port/Brisbane (2v3).

Lose to Collingwood and the path could well be a white hot Carlton in a semi final, with the winner then travelling to Adelaide Oval or the Gabba for an interstate prelim. That's a difficult road. On the other hand, lose to Port/Brisbane in the QF, then the path may involve avoiding both Carlton in a semi final and an interstate prelim (with Collingwood at the MCG awaiting the semi final winner should the Pies win their home QF).

Of course, lots of water still to flow under the bridge, but most importantly we must get that one more win to secure top 4.

Absolutely spot on. We probably have the worst forward line of the 5 contenders heading into the Hawthorn game this week.

The only silver lining of Carlton taking our spot in the top 4 is we'll get two MCG finals in the elimination and semi finals, if we get that far.

The pies forward line is pretty uninspiring i reckon.

Much more important is that we have the best defence.

Other silver lining with your scenario of not making the four is that it will give Fritch one extra game to blow off a few cobwebs.  
My preferred scenario is that we play Collingwood first up and beat them

We had the Filths measure ...when they had their Macedonian Marvel..... and Moore.

Both major contributors to their game that day.

Next time we meet.... they dont.

We are their worst mightmare QF1... bring it.

Unfortunately our fate is no longer in our hands.

I think 2nd place is almost out of reach, 3rd place is the best we can achieve IMO.

I hope I am wrong and Brisbane and Port lose one of their next 2, and we win both games.

Yeah, it would be interesting to check how many of those 4th placed teams were interstate teams.

I have a suspicion there are a couple of very different camps as to what is actually ideal over the next  few weeks.

I'm in the camp that looks at the finals as a different game.  You want to be in good nick, have as few injuries as possible...have some genuine form...but have plenty in the tank as September is draining.  Also  that last week is the prize....not the next couple of games.

Im not suggesting taking foot off the pedal nor am i suggesting putting it to the metal.   I want us to arrive at week one in prime condition. Id also prefer to play at home...We have generally gone ok at the G this year..especially if dry.  For mine trapsing across to Adelaide   of venturing to slippsville  Gabba is a roll of the die I'd rather not take , if not required.

I dont really see the point of killing ourselves to finish 2nd...if that risks the greater ability.

Just my view...   and it doesnt really matter much as I have no ability to control the outcomes
