Woeful coaching job by all.Gary Lyon stated, they didn’t come to play .Didn’t seem motivated from the start.Smart arses that needed to come down a peg.Several players need a wake up call.Bowey, JVR, ABN ( just doesn’t do enough), McVee, Spargo all need a huge shake up…there are several ready for a call up at Casey, give them a go rather than gunners.ABN should have been dropped ages ago.

Yeah I'm not sure what ANB is adding to the team.

Should have been dropped last year for some of his insipid games and yet is still getting a green ticket by Goodwin this year.

When the pressure cooker goes up against quality top sides you can bank your house on ANB becoming a fumbling mess.

I look at Collingwood and Brisbane and don't see them carrying a ANB type player in their half forward line.

I don't think we are a play anywhere, anytime, any condition kind of team anymore.

Give us the G, on a dry, windless day, and we gun. Other times, we want champagne footy to lift us, when grunt over 4 quarters is the way.

Last night was an example. Port wanted it more, and Hinkley told them to go harder and test our metal. His players banged us, and as many said in the JVR saga in the Tribunal thread, it is a physical game. The majority didn't want to fight, leaving it to a few. Wet and cold, needs head over the ball and playing for territory. They had it in our defensive area most of the game, except for the 3rd.

We nearly stole it, but when the game was on the line, our plan was not appropriate for the conditions. Where was any swarming, with most players in at the area of the ball. Butters ran around the lines too easily, meaning we gave them the back of set-ups, and he stepped through the holes anyway.

JVR is young and requires support from leaders, looking at TMac, and to be team first acts. I also want him to hit the packs from the side, as his straight leads and his youth make it too easy to push him under the ball's flight.

We are still a good team, and hard to beat.

These next games at the G, leading to the bye, will make our season (or break).

Cannot put Gus on the ball. Viney looks like he has a niggle. Kossie is not a mid and needs to work on his specky's.

We need an enforcer out there.

(Sorry about the larger than normal script but can't make it revert to default)

Both Viney and Gawn were physically smashed last night. Jack copped so many high hits with no free kicks.

Yeah, I can't understand why the coaches just tried to ignore Butters. I guess they did them same against Gold Coast. Rozas kicked 4 and Anderson had about 37 possies.

Goody seems to just be about, "we'll back our brand" and that's it. Seems a bit stubborn / lazy and or dumb.

We seem to be more flexible with the changes and rotations through the middle than in the past which is great.

Footy really is a game of ebb and flow. We seem to be still very slow on countering the opposition when they start to take control.

I dunno, we're not exactly playing consistent, convincing footy in the last 12 months.

The whole "backing our brand" notion should have been thrown in the bin straight after the Collingwood loss last year on Queens Birthday.

To hear Goodwin say that they knew Butters was pretty much smashing us but then refusing to mitigate the damage just proves that not only is he stubborn, but hasn't learnt anything over the off season.

Goodwin shrugging his shoulders about the question of Oliver throwing the ball…
Missed an opportunity to ****can the overall performance of the maggots imo.

Still filthy. 😤

Yeah? If the free is there, its paid. Its not the umpires job to decide the match outcome.

It was also their job to pay other blatant frees too, not just umpire for the crowd.

How could a forearm to Max’s face in a marking attempt not be paid, or the hit to his head on the wing, or the hit to Tracc’s head, or Tom Mac being grabbed around the face by Jonas and then copping holding the ball, or the 15 metre throw in towards Port’s goal and straight to a Port player not be recalled, just as a few examples of disgraceful one sided umpiring.

It happened to the Bombers and Pies there as well recently with the only difference being their coaches mentioned it.

That said Port deserved to win.

I thought with the rain we were a bit top heavy as well.

We lost by four points and people are carrying on like it was 40

It was a great game and ask any neutral this morning and they’re all saying we both looked like top tier sides

Lost by a country mile.... scoreboard  flattered us.

Yeah I agree.  In our premiership year something special happened, we played for each other but that quickly evaporated

There is nothing wrong with backing your system and players, but when it’s not working, there is a lot wrong with not adapting or changing what is happening.

It would not be stupid to suggest, given the 4 point margin, that putting a hard tag on Butters for the second half would have won us the game, despite everything else.

A slight exaggeration here bb.  Have you forgotten the Neeld era?

Was it 3 free kicks against Clarry for throwing last night?

This whole thing of the umpires are cracking down on X y or z this week is complete BS.

How about a focus on the umpires performances.

The coach should have pointed it out.

What? And get a fine, and put a target on us? He knows how the bigger game is played.

As I said before, if Port had of kicked straight in front of goal it would have been a 4-6 goal loss we were lucky to be that close full stop.

Port simply cleaner and harder when it counted. Comical umpiring but that’s become the standard in this league. Perfectly summed up by being whistle happy all night yet failing to pay the most blatant protected zone 50 we will likely see all year. Could very well have flipped the result.

Has to be one of Max’s most ineffectual games. Not sure what it is about this mob that spooks him.

Credit to Trac who was clearly not 100% but found a way to impose himself on the game. Would’ve been a big part of the win if we had pinched it.

They are the one team that have a history of being really physical with Max.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more teams do this now.

Port have been nullifying him for years with the same, IMO, unsporting tactics.

That said, there is a huge amount of knee-jerk twaddle on this thread.

If buts and maybes

They didn’t, we lost narrowly, such as it is

If we’d kicked accurately vs gc17 we wouldn’t have won that closely

 Swings and roundabouts

The tactics at centre clearance needed more surge and less finesse. And Petracca was played too little in the middle in the first half given the conditions.

What worked once has been eclipsed.

I'd like to know howca team with a list the envy of many a footy dept can turn up and turn it up so woefully.

Last night was only maginally removed from embarrassing.

Good word to describe where we are currently at.

Do they want it enough.

“Because we believe in our system”

Butters had 8 disposals at 50% efficiency in the final quarter. We didn't lose the game because of Butters.

We lost the game because of our inability to be clean at ground level and bring the pressure for the first half.

And yet, if Chandler kicks the snap late, we win. Irrespective of Butters' contribution and the umpires to his scoreline, our system wins it, had the players been as clean as Port were. We weren't, so lost by less than a kick in hostile territory after basically playing a quarter of footy.

Totally agree.

And also a significant part of our game plan/brand is that oppo teams need to be strong enough for the entire game, port lost control of that in the third quarter, and were only brought back into the contest by disgraceful umpiring

You don’t win every game by 10 goals, you don’t win every single clearance, oppo teams put enormous amount of prep into beating our systems. They do this because they know that if they don’t the game could be over by quarter time.

Our defence held up, this is a corner stone of our game plan. May’s kick ins to the left wing position, well guess what, we are the best kick in scoring team the comp by doing this.

Melbourne changed the momentum of that game, got it on our terms and then horrendous umpiring changed that momentum, why should any supporter accept that.

Filthy that games continue to be decided by poor umpiring, this one just happened to be a game we were involved in

Well if you think there is no problem that's your right, we all see games differently, we are doing the same thing as last year how did that go, and if we keep doing the same thing for the rest of the year we will get the same result.

But we were well beaten for three quarters.  Port just couldn't put it on the scoreboard which kept us in it.  The margin doesn't tell the whole story

Indeed mate but that would’ve only drawn their ire even more and the AWFUL would’ve fined the club for doing so.

The best list we've had in nearly 60 years not being optimized due to a stubborn fd. Easier to stick with the brand and underperform than blow up our anxiety, make some bold decisions and take risks.

During the Brisbane game, the lights coming back on flicked a switch for us too. We played daring, fast footy, took some skillful risks and came out a whisker from winning the game. All this after 3.5 quarters of stubborn 'brand' that saw us 5 goals down (and should've been 8-10). Goody would've been cacking his dacks for that last 10 mins

The 2023 Melbourne brand is sooooo 2021

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
