Not a lot of optimism which isn't surprising after last week's game.  Overall their focus was on underdone players, lack of speed, poor attitude and little aggression.  Lamented the absence of their tough guys:  Robinson (retired), Zorko (injured), Matheson (not selected).

From Big Footy

  • Dees bring this pressure it’ll be round rd 23 2022 in rd 2 2023.
  • Team balance is wrong at the moment t. We had a speed problem, now we’ve overcompensated and have a grit problem.
  • Friday night against another fast moving side will be enlightening, the Demons will be fired up after us beating them last meeting.
  • We lack fierceness and need to do something to shock these gentlemen players into desperation effort levels.
  • i just want the players to care and reverse that putrid attitude and effort from yesterday.
  • Maybe I'm getting too pessimistic but if we plan on losing the ruck contest, which is going to happen anyway , how do we expect our guys to shark it with Oliver, Petracca , Brayshaw, Viney ,Harmes etc getting service.
  • Demons mids hit the ball hard. Based on what Horne-Francis did to us, Petracca will be unstoppable.
  • IF Zorko was playing yesterday he would not have changed the result, but I reckon he would have become more aggressive in that 3rd Q and the team might have responded.
  • Another concern I have had the last few months is the lack of defensive players in the forward line.
  • Whether we win or not against Melbourne is not as consequential as to whether we turn up with intent and keep it going for the 4 quarters whatever the state of the game.  If we just fold and poonce around again I'll be genuinely worried.
  • There is something fundamentally wrong with our team all down hill skiers. Of our last 5 games we have been belted 3 times that’s not a team that should be contesting for a flag.
  • I watched the Dogs v Dee's last night, and even though the Dogs lost by 50, still looked light-years better than we did this weekend.
  • The big worry for me is how hobbled Gawn and Petracca were and won't be this time...
  • Payne and Andrews don’t get close enough to their opponents to tackle them. These are two defenders who seem to have a major deficiency in defensive skills.
  • Yep the old “are we pretenders?” conundrum starts again for another year. Melbourne look deadly dangerous already and last couple of years have had the measure of our midfield.
  • Bailey is not an inside mid and neither is Berry. If Berry played for the Dees or the cats he wouldn’t get a game.
  • Fritchs is about to rip Rayner a new one…
  • …Fritsch will run Rayner into the ground in the first quarter, if Rayner tries to run with him.
  • Even in our best games there are quarters we sleep in, let alone whole games we just don't wake up.

My favourite – for its reality and light hearted humour

  • Right, you go whack Petracca in the tibia with mallet, and I'll ride a mini scooter in Max Gawns' back. That oughta help Melbourne replicate their team from that semi final win.

Coleman was excellent against us in the final so his unavailabilty this week will help.  Dees by 4 goals!

Is Rayner a defender now?

Yes, in a similar role to Salem.

I reckon he is a better mid/fwd; a bit wasted in the back line as they could do with his aggression around the ball.

The problem with Raynor fwd is that it’s too attacking to have Cameron, McCarthy, and Raynor there. We have ANB or Spargo that get up to the defensive side of the ground and then run hard forward.

Neither of the Lions three do that so they are probably looking for balance and only Raynor is a chance to be a good HBF.

And his speed too! Incredibly one paced in the middle right now.

Geeze they really aren't onboard after just 1 round are they? I get they got flogged but seriously it's round 1. What will they do when they are 0-2 after Friday night?

Start looking at the history books to see the odds of making the 8 after a 0-2 start...😀

If you can't be confident to bounce back at home with a side like that then that's kind of sad. Had we lost Rd 1 we'd be chomping at the bit for this game and a chance to put things right.

It would be a dream come true to have those guys in their team

Absolute hapless water buffalos

Their problem is those guys are the only ones (except maybe Raynor) who gets a bit physical and ruffles feathers.  We have Viney, Harmes, May and when playing Salem, Kozzie and maybe others.

As we know a bit of aggro can lift teammates and influence a game.

I think their fans are saying the team is a bit soft without them!!

Maybe but the sad fact is that apart from Zorko who has very limited football ability IMO the other two are completely devoid of skill - how Matheson remains on their list is a complete mystery to me

Just repeating what their fans say - not my view.

They’ve shifted him back there over summer in an effort to get something out of him. He’s a number 1 pick who at this stage is a seriously average footballer. He was basically drafted with the promise of becoming a Dusty type mid forward beast and it just hasn’t happened. He’s 24 years old this year and yet only averages 12 disposals and less than a goal a game. Jack Watts had basically been crucified by the point in his career for similar output!

We should beat the Lions this week. We owe them for September.

This. The only reason they beat us is because we were physically broken. Even their fans know it.

We should destroy them, and Viney needs to LEGALLY send Zorko that small annoying piece of human excrement into next week.

Will be interesting to see how long before the blowtorch gets turned on Fagan, if this continues.

Just shows the margin between winning and losing is not that big in modern footy. If you’re 10% off, you’ll get smashed

On the team sheets, yes, but apparently not according to the comments Brisbane supporters are making!

The question i'd have if i was lions fan is why in the heck are they still running a 2010 style defensive system.

I might also ask why they didn't address their lack of leg speed - which we ruthlessly exploit when up and about (and are even better placed to exploit this season because Kozzie is playing more mid time, so is around the ball more and we have added mcvee and Chadler who are both quick and Hunter, whilst not super quick over the first 5 metres seems to have good cruising speed. Added to that bowser looks even quicker than he was, and the team all look super fit)

Likewise with Jarrod Berry. Will never forget Zorko and Berry’s disgusting treatment of our Harry P.

Danhiher has been a bit disappointing for them.  I think they were expecting more.

I hope they send him to Clarry again....

He won't get the same result this time. Clarry is a very competitive footballer and would be storing the last meeting at the back of his mind. Plus he's fit this time.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
