The only negative for me, generally speaking, is that the commentators do not call out diving.

It's probably not too late to get this special World Cup edition of foosball in time for Christmas.

You've lost me daisy. What does this mean?

I think most posters critiquing the game in this thread are drawing a line between its deficiencies and unruly crowd behaviour.

This is something I didn't quite understand on the night, the tension was palpable, fan discontent the week leading up to the game etc and on the night security/police presence was lacking. Not that you can stop (expletives) acting like (expletives).

It took at least 5 minutes before there was a strong Police/Security presence. I was shocked. It was beyond Amateur and dangerous. The Goalie was King Hit…

EVERYBODY KNEW IT WAS “on” AT 20 Minutes.
Is this on AAMI Park or Melb City?

True.  But some posters (e.g. me) said the bad behaviour at soccer matches was in part due to the nature of the game itself, and we were all off and running.  We are all friends - no one has said you have to be some sort of [censored] to like soccer.  Some like it, some don't.    But if anyone on here says you have to be an [censored] to like footy, then........

PS I'll like soccer when they take into account that goalies are probably more agile and 30cm taller than they were 100 years ago  and so they widen the goals accordingly. And stamp out diving. (And maybe get rid of off-side.  Hockey seems to have survived dropping that.)

It is ironic that a game in which off-side is so pivotal has to be decided in a penalty shoot out which specifically dispenses with off-side.

Ah, that's brilliant daisy. I'd never have twigged of course because I'm not actually a Nesbitt. Sans Peur is mine which I think translates as Without Fear?

I’m a sports enthusiast. I can pass the time watching most sports other than some obscure Olympic sports like curling. Baseball is another that I can’t get into.

seems odd to be grousing on a sport if you don’t like it. When it comes to soccer I think people are threatened by it. It’s the world game and with proper oversight can grow much bigger in Australia. It won’t displace AFL, there is room for both in my opinion.

With respect I'm keeping my Soccer talk to the World Cup/actual Soccer threads. This is more the 'division' thread.

The rest of the world should be thankful that Football is not our primary game, otherwise I reckon we'd win 1 in 3...

Haven’t read all of this thread so not sure if soccer is the only subject of discourse, but I’m excited to be going to the Boxing Day Test, first time in over a decade (yay!) with a buddy who’s visiting from Cairns. We got tix for Day Two so as to be there for the end of the match. 😁

So is it Boland  or Hazelwood WCW?

Neither. If I’m to be slapped with (yet another) restraining order it’d be for Pat Cummins (was Tim Paine but we all know what happened with him). Must have a penchant for captains. 😁

edit: just saw it’s gonna be 35 degrees on that day 🥵 so the only person I’ll be interested is the doctor at the burns unit.
My mate’s from QLD, he’s used to the heat. Me, not so much. I get a light sunburn just thinking about the sun.

WCW, I was actually asking you to solve the most pressing Aussie cricket question facing the selectors come the second test - will they pick Hazelwood or will they retain Boland. However, as this went over your head, it very clear now from your response as to why you attend mens sporting events. And why you collect restraining orders.

@Neil Crompton Boland, has to be, he's like a HIMARS unit at the moment but better and it's his home test.

Oh, I see. Thanks for clarifying. In that case, Scotty Boland would get the gig for mine.
As to me attending men’s sporting events, I was heavily involved in our AFLW (Premiership winning!) season, so make of that what you will. 😁

The idea that people punch on at soccer games because there's not enough scoring could be the dumbest sporting theory ever floated.

I’m going with him too, M. And I feel a Michelle on the cards.

I won’t say it. But I can think it.

As for restraining orders, I’m sure the police wouldn’t be issuing them with regards to the AFLW. More like they’d want tickets to “the show.” 😆

Hey Neil. My initial thought was that it was placed in a footy thread knowing the predictable reactions it would receive but the original poster says not, who I take at his word. Admin could have moved it at any time I guess but sometimes it's not a bad idea to see how a thread plays out first as you don't know where it might go. I've now learnt that I'm not patriotic because I enjoy a foreign game and should consider returning to the land of my birth for even contemplating the passion of an AFL crowd 🤦🏻‍♂️

That is simply not the case I posted it as I thought that one of the most amazingly bad supporter efforts should be discussed.

I don't hate Soccer, I don't understand it but I have no axe to grind.

We need something to keep us entertained until the next training report DubDee. Thankfully there's a lot of SPL and EPL football on over the festive period which will help fill the void (ducks for cover).

Basketball for me Rab.

  • GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

It's Game Day and the Demons are back on the road for their 3rd interstate game in 4 weeks as they face a fit and firing Crows at Adelaide Oval. With finals now out of our grasps what are you hoping from the Dees today?

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
