This means there are no more uncontracted players.

Today is the closing date for F/S nominations and have yet to see anything on Brown so not sure we will be taking him on a F/S basis.  That doesn't mean we wouldn't draft him, just that we are not committed to do so.

Based on recent mix of 36 senior players and 6 A rookies we now have two senior list spots and two A rookie spots

Re the chart:

  • Senior draftees added: Jefferson and Adams as Senior List players.
  • A - rookie draftees added:  Sestan and Verrall
  • Games played has been updated.
  • Chandler is now officially a senior player.
  • A new addition to the chart is the 2023 draft picks of which we have 2 x F1 and 2 x F2.  Time to death ride Freo all the way in 2023. !!!

Assuming the 2022 mix of Senior/A-rookie players, we have no senior spots and 1 A-rookie spots.  However the club can change this mix to what is allowed if it wants to add a senior player eg a DFA ala Dunstan last year.  Otherwise we keep the 1 A-rookie spots for the SSP and mid season draft or not fill our quota of 42 players.

Quite a talented list of potential 'Milestone' games in the 2023 H & A season:

  • 200:  Hibberd, May, Gawn, Grundy
  • 150:  Neal Bullen, Harmes, Langdon, Lever, Salem, Brayshaw, Oliver
  • 100:  Spargo

If 150 games is the 'sweet spot' for an AFL player at their peak, we are there!!

In terms of 2023 contract renewals the potential outcomes are:

  • Retirements:  Hibberd, Melksham
  • Non-renewals:  Dunstan
  • Trades if requested:  Jordon, Neal Bullen.  Note:  Both are Unrestricted FA's so they could go to a club of their choice and we take the AFL compensation pick.
  • New contracts for most of the other players, particularly Rivers.
  • The special one is Kozzie's signature, hopefully sooner than later for 4 years ie his FA year (or longer) but would settle for 2 years.

alphabetical except for adams, gonna have to delete the whole thread and re start it, cant handle that ahaha, kidding love ur work luci, a great reference point all year long. i'd have a strong watch on harmes throughout the year if he continues to get moved around positionally he could seek a move, and ditto tomlinson again so we may less less uncontracted players depart than expected, big years required for 3rd year rookie Deak Smith, also chandler and jordon will want to keep taking steps forward. and where do dunstan and schache fit in come eos will be interesting too. definitely a flag list there tho!

Awesome!! great work as usual..

small note, dunstan has played 121 games not 122...

because of this the List completely ruined.... Throw it away and start again....

Thanks as always Luci

You make keeping up to date so easy

I'm sure all on here appreciate your efforts

Thanks LH great effort as usual, I would love to see you take over the MFC site, you leave them in the dust. A bit worrying that we have five Premiership players contracts expire in 2023.!!

actually 6, dz

hibbo, kossie, jordon, anb, maysie and rivo

Thanks DC Yes I think that I subconsciously left Hibbo off. That’s a lot of talent that we haven’t tied up though.

Fingers crossed that Kozzie does not replicate the Jacko saga that we had to endure last year.  Please re - sign (had to be careful typing that one) sooner than later.……same goes for Rivers…..and May!

yeah, hope they get a few signed up by round1

Of the 6 premiership players OOC this year the one I'm keen to see signed is Kozzie.

My guess is:

  • May will get a short extension likely on less $
  • Hibberd will most likely reitire
  • Jordon is an UFA so can look for opportunities elsewhere and probably will if he doesn't get regular game time.
  • ANB plays an important role but at some point we need to develop someone that can replace him
  • Rivers is important but we have others to step in.

While it would be good to keep the premiership list together, I feel some need to move on to refresh the team and make room for those pushing for selection at Casey.

imv we would be fine if any of the last four or even all four, moved on.

On the bright side none of them would be re-contracted on big $ so the sal cap isn't really an issue on keeping them.

Kozzie is the one!

Didnt know there were half a dozen required players OOC this year.

Strewth.

No need to worry.  I'm sure the club has it all under control and we will see new contracts for who we want to keep rolled out in the coming months.

Based on recent media McVee's and Rivers' contracts are in discussion, Jordon has put off negotiations and Kozzie's contract is looking encouraging.  Chandler turned down offers from Adelaide two years ago so doubt he will go anywhere else now.

Its interesting that there is no news on Neal-Bullen.  He is an Unrestricted Free Agent so can go to a club of his choice if he chooses.

I don't mind if we lose some players be they in or out of contract as we need to find room for the up and comers.  This will mean some established players will find new homes.  C'est la vie for a club with good drafting, excellent development and on field success.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
