2022 Player Reviews: #5 Christian Petracca

The club’s midfield bull and now triple All Australian had another great season, once again featuring near the top of the Brownlow count. A major piece of our great midfield who also causes havoc when going forward and if there is an area for improvement, it’s in his set shots for goal.

"Petracca’s long-term future at the Demons is locked in after he signed a seven-year contract extension last year to tie him to the club until the end of season 2029. The midfield star again underlined his importance to the Demons this season, averaging an elite 28 disposals a game. Bravely played through a hairline fracture to his tibia in the Demons’ semi-final loss to the Brisbane Lions with a gutsy 27 disposals and one goal." - Herald Sun

Christian Petracca, it’s hard to find the words that sum up my feelings for Tracc I have loved every thing that he has bought to our mighty club up to this point. To have a group of such elite players at our club at the same time has already shown us all what is possible hell even injured and with a broken leg he is still better than most, and with a bit of luck and continued smart recruitment we / they are capable of so much more. Looking forward to seeing what a tough fit Christian Petracca can bring in 2023.!!!

He finished the season off clearly injured - arguably should not have played the last final or the rest of the game vs Swans after fracturing his leg

One of my all-time favorites and he is "heart and soul" MFC - love what he has brought so far and can't wait to see what he delivers in the seasons to come

We are oh so lucky to have CP5 - absolute gun

Three times consecutive All Australian and top 2 in B&F - that is elite consistency.

Sure is.

One comparison between Trac and Oliver is that Trac has polled brownlow votes  in only 2 of a possible 30 games (when he's polled votes) when the Dees have lost while Oliver has polled in 12 of a possible 54 games (when he's polled votes) when the Dees have lost - over their respective careers thus far.

This suggests to me that Trac is more of a barometer than Oliver in terms of us winning games, where as Oliver can play absolute top shelf footy in losses - eg - Adelaide 2021, Collingwood x2 in 2022.

That's the sort of analysis that I come here for. Great post.

Both Trac and Oliver are barometers to our success. Does Trac step up when Oliver is down? This problem is Oliver is rarely down. Probs not a stat on this or a small sample when Oliver has missed games.

I say it’s a algorithm with Gawn, Oliver, Trac, Viney, May etc. all moving parts who compliment and allow each other to shine.

All round fantastic player

Except for his goal kicking. Hard to fathom why it's so bad.

Because his best work is done on instinct.

He's a star and had another great season.Even on a broken leg at the end he was still one of our best players!
He's lead the league in score involvements over the past three seasons now. When he gets going, he's unstoppable both around the ball and forward half of the ground. If he can tidy up his set shots for goal, he'll be the undisputed best player in the league. It's the only flaw in his game, which is otherwise outstanding.

Love what Trac brings off the field too. He's very friendly, marketable, and a good role model for the youngsters. Great to have him signed up long term!

Whatever happened to his Traculan twist!

I've felt it's a bit unfair to label Trac a garbage kick for goal, his technique isn't the best but more often that not he'll kick a big time goal from a set shot when it's needed.
