Great the club has locked away the talent and we don't have anyone significant at risk .

I think the priority would be looking for KPP's.

Of those listed, Ben McKay would be handy and free up Petty. Might also be able to go forward himself.

Hipwood would also help by going forward allowing us to play with 3 key tall's including the resting ruck man.

Himmelberg would be the other possibility and seems to have got a fair bit of the pill going by the stats. I think he can play at either end also

McGovern might want to get to a team in the premiership window in his older years.

I’d go for all of those except McGovern, he’s a strong back man but he’s 30 and May is in better form and fitness. They will be retiring around the same time so I don’t see him adding much to our list.
I’d add Sonny Walters as the type of player we don’t have many of and could improve our team.

We have the next McGovern on out list in Daniel Turner.

Yes it's a big call from my end but happy to stick my head out on this.

Tough ountry lad who doesn't take a backwards step with his intercept defending being his biggest strength.

Assuming you mean Mitch, then yes, I agree.

Himmelberg has been reinvented as a defender. He was an ordinary fwd IMO

He's also an academy player I believe so might be hard to prise out of GWS

Agree Dazzle.

I think he has huge scope, and will surprise many - including some Demon fans.

He just has 'it'.

Jordan isn't an unrestricted free agent.

Yes he is. Because he was delisted and rookied, now every time he comes out of contract, including next year, he's UFA.

Ben McKay looks the attractive option here.  With Steven May getting on we need a replacement.  If Daniel Turner comes on as hoped, McKay may allow Harry Petty to move forward which would kill two birds with one stone.  I don't see Turner as May's replacement, Petty is currently that.

McKay will be RFA and North will finish low so wouldn't match to force a trade because they won't get better than the pick 2 or 3 they'd get for compensation.  That means we can retain our strong 2023 draft hand.  Any other KP is going to involve an expensive trade.

There'll no doubt be plenty of competition for his signature and the ball will already be rolling.

gws will struggle at the bottom again next year imo, maybe he'll be looking to get out and try and find some success if we can convince him we can fit him in

No good KPF's the right side of 30 up for grabs unfortunately. The only one we'd consider is Hipwood, but he's not great and isn't a strong contested marking type.

Missing out on McKay was a bummer. We were chasing him, but he wound up signing a long extension with the Blues. He would've been a great acquisition. Seeing the Tigers get Tom Lynch as a free agent really hurt. Big salary isn't an issue, it's getting a gun in without even having to trade for them that's the key.

I still don't understand why McKay wants to be remain under the shadow of Curnow?

It's clear Curnow is the fan favourite. Assuming of course that Curnow stays healthy.

I am also thinking if there is a huge salary cap issue at Carlton in the near future...🤔 (Fingers crossed they become Collingwood ala 2019-2020)

I would have thought a great goal kicking small like Gresham would be a no brainer.

Aren't we also looking at players who are going one year before the end of their contracts?

We can use outr 2023 draft hand to get a young forward is out out of contract in 2024?

Melbourne (3)

Luke Dunstan*, James Jordon*, Alex Neal-Bullen

Neal-Bullen may not have a mighty reputation outside the Demons but is highly regarded internally for his work ethic, running ability and defensive nous in attack. He hasn’t lacked the senior opportunities the likes of Jayden Hunt and Sam Weideman did when they chose to leave this off-season. So long as it stays that way, Neal-Bullen will likely extend his stay in red and blue. Jordon was the medical substitute for Melbourne’s drought-busting 2021 grand final triumph and was better again this year. Could Lachie Hunter’s arrival impact Jordon’s opportunities? Fringe midfielder Dunstan is entering the second and final year of his contract after crossing from St Kilda.

I’d imagine Gresham and Dyl Moore would both be targets (for 16 other clubs too).

And every club should make Stengle a big offer just to keep the Cats honest.

Same goes for Harry Himmelberg and Ben McKay.

Redman would be a handy stopper but probably doesn’t come cheap.

Plenth of veterans and previously delisted types.

One off broadway option is David Cuningham. He didn’t return at all last year from an ACL but he’s a player I have a little bit of time for if he gets healthy.

Not much exciting on offer.

Would monitor Ben McKay for a possible switch to the forward line. He's an ideal age, is all-round good enough for AFL level and the key fact is he gets up and takes contested marks on a regular basis. Would also be a totally acceptable option if May or Petty weren't available in defence for any amount of time.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
