Before we get bogged down in all the finals hoo hah, I really just want to take one darn second to acknowledge what an excellent home and away season this was from our club. Some clubs fall off a cliff in their title defence, some might skim by and make the 8 but our boys backed up and saw off the challenges to finish in an optimal position for another shot at success.

Onto the bigger business but for now thanks MFC, that was a real joy to be part of ❤️.

The first club since Essendon in 2000 and 2001 to be in the top 4 for every round for two consecutive seasons.

2nd on the ladder, 16-6, led in 5 of our 6 losses by at least 4 goals and was within a goal in the other with only 10 minutes to play. Really only blown out in one game (Freo at the G) - it has been a remarkable season!

Can we get the whole crowd at the G doing this when we are 5 goals up in the 4th qtr?

Gotta smell those roses sometimes and with a bye this week there's the perfect chance to.

Still have to picnh myself sometimes that we finally have a competitive footy club that you can go and watch week after week and know you're going to get a decent game.

I can't remember who it was but an AFL coach about 20-30 years ago said that he wanted his team to be seen as a seriously good team in the competition. I'm paraphrasing, but he said seriously good teams don't "just" make finals and get knocked out quickly and seriously good teams don't just win one premiership and then disappear for a stretch. I think we are now a seriously good team.

Postscrip: The coach may have been Terry Wheeler or someone at the Bulldogs.

Was thinking that the team made a bold promise to us fans at the flag celebration day last year, when they committed to winning a flag on the G for us.

That they have now delivered a Qualifying and subsequent finals at the G, means they have delivered on the first part and set them selves for the second part, winning through to the GF and Premiership.

Kudos to the club for putting it out there and delivering.

Love this club.

Leigh Mathews rule. 5 goals up, with less than 5 minutes on the clock?

C'mon mate, you know sides can score 3 goals in 30 seconds these days - well actually maybe that's just us? 😂

Very true. Should never forget we broke world records.

Ok, 5 goals up with 1 minute to go, and we are on!

Twice in the 3rd quarter of a grand final. Taking in BBB first of the last it was close to 4 goals in 1 min of playing time as well as the harmes starter  hatrick minute.

Agree 100%

Especially when you consider this - Top 8 record v Top 8 sides in 2022

2022Top8vsTop8.jpg

We've had by far the hardest run of any team (followed by the dogs who just scraped in).

A number of our losses happened in our flat patch in the middle of the season (Freo, Swans, Pies) when May was out and we were battling injuries etc.  All teams have flat spots so it's not like we can discount them.  But to have played 3 or 4 more matches against the top 8 than almost everyone else and still finish 2nd is a pretty bloody brilliant effort!

I think this is especially so when you consider our tough finish to the season and we look to be finding our form / touch.  It's all coming together.

Compare this to the Cats / Tigers last month and they might get a shock in September!

If we add Fritsch’s 5th goal in the last quarter it was 5 goals in under 3 minutes of play.

We did it in the Prelim too

Ok, new plan. We get 10 goals up, and wolf of Wall Street comes out with 2 minutes to go!

The only thing harder than a perfect season (which is what we had last year), is following up from a perfect season.
Of the 4 teams who made last year’s prelim, one didn’t make finals and one only got in because another team lost by a point.

I just hope our supporter base is as committed to them as they were to us.

We have got a job to do. Turn up and make some real noise!

Well last year we had an incredible comeback against the cats on their Turf to cement top spot and secure double chance.

We didn't finish on top this year but it's similar the way we absolutely demolished the lions on their turf ro secure a double chance.

Just like last year 2 wins and we are in the granny.

The way we played against the lions, I would not want to have to play us.

We have done better than last year imho or at least as well, because of the injuries and protocols  one after another to our backline.

Salem, Lever, Hibberd, Petty and May have all had issues at various times and so our defence never really got to gel and be consistent.

Well it seems to  fine now.

We are back to having zip injuries barring poor Tmac and peaking at the right time.

Even Milkshake has put his hand up and said he's back and showed that the blues game wasn't just a lucky one. He played well against the lions too.

Can't wait to beat swans on the Mcg.

It has been a very good year  when you finish second on the ladder. We line up for finals at the G for the first time since 2018. The major negative for me was the lack of day games. Now I know it is all about ratings for the club sponsors and our finances however on a purely personal level it is very difficult for me to get to night games now.  So I have been relegated to the box.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
