You appear to have good contacts within the club and, understandably, wish to protect them by revealing information in the form of an opinion piece. If that is the case, please accept my gratitude. Your "theories" about loading have been insightful, whether they are your own ideas or information obtained from other sources.

Unfortunately I don't have any contacts at all at the club to be 100% honest.

The May intel was one of the very few rimes I have been privy to such info, and was not via the club.

Mentioning it probably sounded a bit try hard, clever clogsy, which is a touch embarrassing.

I wish I could say I had inside intel about loading, but my thoughts on loading all derive from observation (i mean the eyes dont lie - you can see when players are fatigued), assessment of the evidence and application of the Occam's razor principle.

So now we have this grand conspiracy where key club leaders (Richardson, Goodwin, Petracca, Brayshaw) are conning the media?

For what end?

Implied in this thread it is to not fess up that we are loading?

Really, I would have thought saying nothing or a few straight bat words around training loads etc would be a lot less embarrassing than admitting to complacency, arrogance, lack of ruthlessness, lack of buy-in.

The media are generally idiots and after click bait.  Why on earth would our club waste time to con them?  Not to mention to spend time getting our leaders to all sing from the same song book!

I don't for a minute believe everything that comes out from the club.  But to think this weeks meeting and club commentary is just a charade to fool the stupid media is insulting to the club.

Luci, why did we suddenly run out the game for 4 quarters for the first time in a couple of months? (Other than the Lions game, where we had a rest week, coming off the bye)

I could list a few reasons but then we go down that 'rabbit hole' again so I won't.

My post was about the idea the club set out to con the media.  For what?

I think you get a bonus when due to "ruthlessness" the opposition is called "hapless".

It’s got nothing to do with a media con. Has got to do with releasing information that suits you.

Why give away intel that would be useful for your opposition.

And extra points for getting an 'analyst' to say any variation on 'see, there's still a place for an old fashion rev up in footy'

Could the talk of ‘ruthlessness’ be a little bit of code for being fresh.

If we come out firing tonight, it looks to most like an attitude issue that we adjusted, when in reality it was just getting to the end of the loading period and we can actually cover the ground required to be ruthless.

The club knew we would be significantly better this week. And also know how dumb the media are, so they have planted the narrative pre game “pow wow”, “ruthlessness”, “hunger” etc

whatever.

Hook, line and sinker. Watch every stupid media commentator say for the next week, how we have magically re-discovered our “ruthlessness”, “fitness”, and “defensive game”.

And most painful of all will be Kingy claiming he was correct in identifying the “pow wow” as a turning point.

I don't think it was a media con at all.

But the above posts sound like a few here believe it was.

What intel would we be giving away?  If anything the comments by our leaders this week should have prepared Freo for what we actually did last night?

Exactly.

Control the narrative. It's communication 101.

Everything scripted, repetition of key messages by all club people doing media. In this case ruthless.

Which we were. From start to finish.

As the club knew we were going to have the legs to do so.

Smart stuff by the club.

I just want to provide a slightly alternative view to what you have been hearing from the club in the last week or so.

The way to maximise the result of physical stress is to improve your mental application. Loading and the effect of fatigue is not overcome only with your body, you largely overcome it with your mind - mental toughness. If you sit around telling your players that everything is going to be fine when we drop the loads, you kill better than half the benefit of loading. The way to maximise the benefit is to get players to focus on and improve the things that they can control even while they are desperately fatigued.

Because of this, it is absolutely to the clubs advantage to apply the loads and then talk only about ruthlessness, selflessness and application. This is getting the players to focus on what they can control. If they do that, not only do they increase their physical endurance, they increase their mental endurance at the same time.

So what we’re are hearing from the players and the coaches is not a lie, it is what they need to believe to get the maximum benefit from the loading.

Personally I believe in the loading and am on record about it, but to think that's the only thing happening at the club and to think they all got together and said 'let's troll the media by saying "ruthless" lots this week' is one of the silliest things I've read on Demonland.

@binman You must have been chuckling and feeling very, very correct during some parts of our third quarter.

There was a stretch there which may actually be the best three or four minutes of continuous team and zone defence I've ever seen. Freo switched the ball three times, went backwards, tried anything, and it just kept getting snuffed out.

It was an absolute masterclass.

Making stuff up most likely to bait a response. Good for you.

You and Luci came up with those words, re con / trolling the media.

The club like all clubs, and like always is selective in what it releases to the media. Fact.

There is no criticism or judgement on Melb in its PR approach. flashinthepan’s comments make a lot of sense also. Reinforce a message in the media, that may flow through to players and get them focused on what they can control.

There 100% is criticism and judgement on the media for not having the ability to analyse things a bit more deeply and see that last nights performance was driven by more than just a “pow wow” and “ruthlessness”

Over and out. Have a great day!

Wasn't directed at you mate. Hadn't actually read your post when I commented. Just had a read and it's a good post, completely agree, and it's what I'm getting at here - it's not one thing or the other, it's a combination of things.

Smart by the club.

Helps calibrate fans expectations too.

By that I mean, it's clearly not a coincidence the club didn't come our with the ruthless message last week.

We weren't ready, so would not have been able to back it up on field.

We were this week, and the message is get ready fans we will go up a gear and our journey to tbe summit has started after a period of plateauing and getting things right half way up the mountain.

Then we go out and absolutely make sure the words aren't hollow.

I'll say it again, very smart by the club.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
