Can someone provide me a link of this stat. I'm lead to believe that it's a percentage of kicks inside 50 rather than volume. Spargo is a low possession player, so if he's only delivering the ball inside 50 4 times a game, hitting 2 targets is hardly impressive or a game changer.

They are Champion Data stats quoted on an episode of On The Couch last month after 20 games. To my knowledge, plebs like myself can't access them but I can tell you exactly what was broadcast.

Player                                   Kicks inside 50                      Mark rate              = targets hit for ytd (my calc)

Petracca                                  124                                           14%                            17

Oliver                                         94                                            13%                            12

Viney                                         62                                            19%                             12

Gawn                                         59                                            12%                             7

Spargo                                       56                                            46%                            26

Sparrow                                     54                                             7%                              4

Jordan                                       53                                            15%                             8

Langdon                                    50                                            18%                             9

AFL Average                                                                              19%

Maybe it's just me in that I value quality over quantity, but I am impressed. And ONLY with Spargo.

appalling stats no wonder we are in trouble in F50

Its like a rubber ball some days in and ou in and out we take it up to AFL average and we kick more goals

Wonder if the fWD coach looks at this

Brent Moloney would've loved this game plan.
Get ball, close eyes, boot ball.

Would be interested to know Kozzie's stats here - I think they only include players with 50 kicks inside 50.  But I suspect his % mark rate would be close to Spargo.  If the ball is in their hands, we generally score.

We have a ruckman as a forward coach, we have a forward pocket as a midfield coach, and we are splurging 700k on a back up ruck. That’s what I call wasting a window.

Everything should be optimised for excellence in every domain within an inch of its life to not waste the window

Yet there's people wondering if Ben Rutten could make a good midfield coach..

I saw this stat a while ago... and all of a sudden I changed my expectation for what happens (for any team) when it's delivered inside 50.

"Oh the balls been in 10 times... well that should only be around 2 marks, if that..."

Less disappointment and angst, that's for sure.

It's a marker of how crucial systemic defence is.

I was curious about Stafford, as I couldn't remember him kicking many goals when he played. I was surprised that of all the VFL/AFL players who have played since 1967, he sits 35th on the goal kicking accuracy table. At least he knows how to kick goals.

Who are you referring to?

Not sure what they do in meetings & training session but the plan seems to be to kick it half a metre over the head of the forward.  Thursday the only decent fwd delivery all night was Petracca to Fritter for the last goal.

We can forgive the forward coach for poor disposal, that is on the players. We can safely assume no coach says butcher the ball.

Its more about set up, tactics and positioning for a forward coach.

Which is also terrible. Whether it's because the mids/half forwards don't follow direction or the forwards don't trust them to hit the target, I don't know. But we are constantly bombing to a crowded forward line. No one ever gets space except for Fritta and even that is less often now.

We certainly don’t have too many one on ones in our F50.

Some of that is due to the type of entry, for example quick turnover, catching players up the ground or just isolating players which we seen to not do a lot.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
