Currently our 2nd ruck option is Weid...

We are screwed if Max goes down!

For 700k a season which would be less that LJ's contract, we will get more out of Grundy.

Rucks often go fine into their Mid 30's.

The talk of all these other promising young rucks is twaddle....Most are not available, and most won't be good for years.   Even Preuss still looks pretty hopeless....Good ruckman there are not many in the league....We would have the 2 best  in the league going by recent AA selections.   Would be a fearsome prospect for any team to come up against.

*We will still be trying to recruit a good forward regardless of what happens in this space.

Why would we be screwed? Our midfield is strong enough that they should be able to break even at minimum at centre clearance. In fact we have lost centre clearances a number of times the last two years despite having a dominant ruck and midfield! You just need a big body who can compete and bring the ball to ground for our mids and running players. Just compete around the ground and don't get outmarked.

We are blessed to have Max with some of his around the ground work but the ruck position is the most overvalued position in footy.

Not really.  Grundy will be playing for Melbourne next year.

Hopefully we are not paying $700,000 a year. That is a bad deal

$700,000 is what The Filth should be paying. They created this rubbish contract

It will be about that amount

For starters, the Pies aren't paying part of $700k, they're paying part of $1m+.

And in 3 years time, if things don't wok out for either player at their new club, Jackson would still have massive trade currency, whilst Grundy will be worth zilch.

If Grundy had 2 years to run, by all means give it a shot. 5 years is a ridiculous contract to take on.

Yeah so Collingwood paying 300K per year.   i should have phrased it better!

LJ on 800K+ or Grundy for 700K....Most good ruckmen play into their mid 30's.

Jackson may be worth more in future but there is no guarantee he becomes a better player.  His next contract will quite likely be the biggest he ever signs.

How long is Max signed on for lol?

He is just one knee reconstruction away from being a ridiculous contract also.

Most good ruckmen play well beyond 31.  In fact they be just starting to hit their peak at this stage.  Big guys take a long time to develop.

I don't think 5 years is a huge risk to take.   Got a lot of good footy left in him.

Spargo to ruck if it don't matter.

Wholeheartedly disagree with your view on this one.

Clearly this is all a genius strategy from Goody to divert the conversation away from Dogga so he can now focus exclusively on kicking 4 in a winning GF. Bravo Simon.

Goodwin and Richardson met with him last week. Not a rubbish topic at all. This trade could happen

Get Jackson signed up then we dont have to worry about  buying Grundy  FFS!  he's injury prone, not young  and will cost a gazillion dollars.

Grundy is the last player we need. He's Collingwoods headache.

Theyre stuck with him and that absurd  7 y contract which will be back loaded.

Atleast Melbourne thinned out T/Mac's contract by pushing it out 2 extra years. Smart move. Pies cant do it with Grundy's insane deal.555

I'm also confused by Goodwins presser yesterday.

He stated that they have been really happy with Gawns progress in the forward line and could see this as something that could be used more often down the track.

Checks notes and see that Gawn hasn't kicked a goal since round 12 against Sydney...

Goody is a funny bugger. ...

Could be double FUGAZI. Make both Jackson, and the contingency plan of Grundy believe that first ruck is theirs if they want it.

But really Maxy, getting over an injury, and not able to play 70-80% ruck just yet.

PS that is a brutal stat. No goals in Max’s last 6 games, despite a decent amount of fwd line time. (That R12 game against Syd. 3 goals, 28 touches, 30 hitouts. The week before he got injured against the filth)

You don't know how Grundy is going to come up post injuries. It's a huge risk giving anyone at his age a 5 year deal, let alone a player coming off consecutive long term injuries.

If either Grundy or Max were proven forwards, it maybe worth a punt, but they're not.

Neither do you. I'll back our medical staff who actually have the knowledge at hand, rather than mere speculation.

FWIW, I'm not completely sold on the Grundy move either, but I reckon the FD are thinking about tweaking the system in lieu of not landing a KPF, and so they want to build the forwardline around Max (rightly or wrongly).

Richmond 2017 provide the model.

Not sure if we want him or not BUT how good would it be if he played in the 2023 Grand Final won the Norm Smith and we beat Collingwood by say 5 points. With an after the siren goal kicked by Grundy from 50 mt.

And they had Darcy Moore in the ruck, because Cameron & Cox injured.

1 hour ago, mo64 said:

Is Grundy better than Darcy Cameron and Mason Cox? On paper the obvious answer is yes, but the reality is that the Pies are performing better without Grundy. Cameron and Cox are far better forwards than Grundy, which makes the tandem work.

The larger factor is Cameron + Cox combined salary is likely less than Grundy’s. And the pies reportedly, have the ability to pick up some other handy players that will strengthen their team if they can find the salary space.

Well hopefully Kane & Matthew don’t read demonland. If they do, well hi guys, unfortunately I can’t say what I think of you, as mods will remove my post.

Yep, gone are the days when we made everyone team member on the ground look good.

ACtually it shows how short -term thinkers the media are and they need fresh meat daily.  LJ put on hold so that story now dead.

Up pops now Grundy, Dunkley this morning, Buddy, any GWS player Clarko, Degoey (still has some legs on it this story), Oliver Henry, McStay,..........

Just needed to starve the LJ issue of oxygen and it dies.

Do you seriously reckon Jason Taylor will be outplayed on this?

I don't. The one thing I'm certain of the deal will suit us. I love the idea of the Pies paying us to have an AA standard player they no longer want.  Due diligence needed of course to minimise our risk of further health issues.

Yet if Grundy ends up at Geelong some posters (not looking at you) will whinge that they have all the luck!

Grundy needs his cheese platters I feel. Doesn’t fit in with cats culture.

MFC trades for Grundy:  It's a terrible decision.  He's injury prone/too old/contract is too long/$ too big.

GFC trades for Grundy:  It's a great decision.  They keep doing this and never bottom out.  I hate Geelong.

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
