We won’t lose a game for 4 years with Naughton as our key forward

I hope I’m right as well. As previously stated - all care and no responsibility re the rumour

Of all the clubs a key forward would want to get to, you’d have to think our style would have us at the bottom of the list.

Not many would want to go somewhere and be expected to get smashed by 2-3 defenders every contest and have all their shots from deep in the pockets.

Is that a higher or lower priority than winning a premiership?

Finding upgrades on players like ANB, Sparrow, Hibberd, Hunt & Harmes will be as significant to our improvement as grabbing another key fwd

Ahh yes, it’s definitely the mostly premiership winning role players that are the problem.

Naughton is contracted until the end of 2024. There is no way in hell the Dogs are letting him go anywhere.

There is no decent maturing key forward coming out of contract this year. Nor does it appear that there is much key forward action at the top end of the draft.  I think we will need to play a longer game to solve this one and work to line up the right target for 2024.

We aren’t 2008 Hawthorn, and none of our mids can consistently hit a target. But Fritsch has no problem generating one on ones and kicking goals.

Naughton would have a field day. But I just can’t see the dogs off chasing Lobb and Jones and giving up their best tall

I thought Gunston was a bit over the hill but should definitely be a target. Still has a lot to give and could help JVR develop his craft

The Naughton talk is interesting.

I hate this time of year because I'm always let down when we're linked with a player we inevitably don't get.

It's hard to believe Naughton would leave the dogs and come to us.

But if he did, good God. We'd be laughing.

Me too. Hence why I probably took the [censored] out @chook fowler initially..

Naughton is my definition of a generational talent. Getting him would be the biggest coup that I have seen in my time supporting the dees.

Depends how you look at it

bulldogs have a surplus of midfielders and key forwards, they need a fwd/ruck (lobb)

key back (Jones)

you have JUH and sam Darcy up forward and your not going to trade them

you could fill out rest of squad with naughton trade, (two first round picks) get in some quality young talent or trade and get some X factor players like cam Zurharr etc

imagine a team with English lobb and Darcy in it all over 206cm

The problem with that logic is:

Keath, Jones, Lobb, Josh Bruce are all 30+ next year with a host of injury and other issues.

Darcy and JUH are just babies unlikely to produce consistent footy until 2024 if not longer.

A spine of 30+ and babies is asking for trouble.

The only way it makes sense for the Dogs is if Jones and Lobb are actually moves getting made after they've already decided to move Naughton.

Which means there's either been a serious falling out and/or they're interested in the Jackson compensation package. I can't imagine they're actually keen on Lobb and a late first (or 2) for Naughton, so the latter seems unlikely.

Well if they know Naughton wants out, it would explain their interest in Lobb

Bring in Darcy to play alongside JUH and Lobb to play the ruck/forward rotating with English. Weightman at their feet and that's a dangerous forwardline even next year.

Have heard a rumour from a good source - A 3 way trade involving Naughton to Demons, Jackson to Freo and Lobbe to the Dogs. Watch this space.

Shower thought of the day: I wonder if this is the club's way of finding an inside rumour leak? 🤔

Been thinking the same names.

Geogiades is the most intriguing one for me, he looks a natural forward with his leading patterns and he can mark in contests.

But is he a No 1 forward? of.

Great mark and ok kick but he is 192 cms.

We were very interested in drafting him.

My wife’s convinced that she heard the commentary team mention something about Naughton leaving during the Dogs Dockers game yesterday. I missed it and it was well before I read @chook fowler’s post.

He’d certainly improve our forward line in multiple areas. Naughton’s contested marking is much publicised, but he is mobile and good with fwd pressure as well. Could the Dogs afford to lose him with JUH & Darcy being the part of the future fwd line?

Why would Dogs let him go?

Of course we would be thrilled to get him, but surely he is untouchable.

Close to none I would have thought. But Gunstan as a free agent could be a shot.

Theoretical forward line of Gunstan and Naughton would be very exciting with JvR developing.

It depends on our list management strategy.

Do we want to continue to bring in youngsters to extend our window beyond 5 years or do we go really hard over the next 5 years?

Already have Brown and TMac on the verge of retirement. Adding Gunston instead of another younger development player to partner with JVR and say Naughton will depend on the answer to the above question.

Gunston also has a checkered recent injury history, so we'd be gambling on 3 talls near 30 with injury clouds. Not great list strategy IMO.

I know for a fact that WCE are heavily into Naughton to replace Kennedy.

You don't think we play the style we do to suit the list we have?

Getting Naughton could allow us to go more central, provided we have the crumbers. The way Naughton launches at the ball, it makes it easier for their crumbers or he marks it.

The dogs with Darcy, Lobb and JUH another year older would be as close as us for 2023

I’m sure we do but I think it’s probably based more on the people delivering the ball.

Why would the Dogs trade Naughton? Sounds fanciful.

If he wants to go... why would we trade Jackson?

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
