we need xfactor half/forward types who have elite skills to take over from anb spargo and even picket ( so he can play midfield)

 so for me if we can get Gold Coast pick as well as freo pick

I'm still on the Curtin wagon for our first pick but it seems a near certainty that multiple very suitable very capable players will be available in the first half of the first round. 

Duursma particularly suits my craving for a player capable of doing some attacking damage, mixing into our midfield and half-forward groups and being different and difficult everywhere he goes. Seems like there is not even a hint of consensus about where he'll get picked; I've seen anywhere from top 3 to barely inside the top 10.

That seems true for a lot of players, and driven by a glut of competing quality. What a great draft to have a big say in!

I'm trying to avoid facing the awkward fact that there's going to be some players just inside or on the edge of the 22 who will be moving on at season's end, but that's also clearly in our favour.

Didn’t they change the rules so academy players drafted in 1st round can’t be taken by the club they were with like we missed out on Mac Andrew

Me too. I have this idea of a quick, hard running 192cm + midfielder with great skills who can hit targets. A Finn Callahan type.

Then again someone like McKercher would be an ideal replacement for Viney...

A reckon a midfielder, then a skillful flanker type (Duursma) with midfield scope would be the ideal combo, should the stars align

No, that's only Next Generation Academy players (and now that's anywhere in the first 40 picks!). Doesn't apply for Northern Academy Players. When Mac Andrew was drafted the rule was the first 20 picke were quarantined but of course he went at 5 and I doubt if Melbourne would have takem that high even packaging picks snd with the 20% discount

Reckon the afl will ‘manipulate’ the compensation for McKay a la Frawley (ie actually give compensation from his departure its  worth) and make sure north get a pick after their first pick

 So it could well end up being meth coke, gc17 having to use points to match for walters, north, north, hawks, our pick from Flagmantle

“The Colonel” Sanders may be unavailable to us. According to Channel 7 North won’t be receiving a priority pick but they may be granted priority access to Sanders as he is a part of their Next Generation Academy.

How? Why? Mac Andrew was not given the same access as available for the Dees. It seems there is the rules and then there is the AFL changing the rules when they need to. 
I think they could get a “start of round 2” priority pick which would then need to be traded.

He is indigenous. Therefore, I think there are a few loopholes the AFL will seek to use in order to avoid the NGA rules that apply to non-indigenous players. You will find the AFL will allow this to go through, rather than a priority pick. It essentially gives them pick 3 or 4. Our pick will slide.

because the afl need north to be better than we were in the early 2010s

why? no idea

i suspect that they'll get a high compo pick for mckay leaving rather than access to sanders carte blanche, but they'll probably pick him anyway

We should go for best available but with a bias towards a forward or outside midfielder.

With Petracca, Oliver and Viney contracted on long deals we don't need an inside midfielder. And so any player we pick needs to be able to enhance our best 22 from outside the centre square.

Our defence is stacked with high quality and depth.

I like the look of Duursma.

The why is because they’ve been a drag on the comp for too long (we were coming off a premiership) and they will soon lose the financial benefit of Tassie games. Being unwatchable is one thing, but unviable is something else altogether.

The how is similar to how GC were able to add Alex Davies, Joel Jeffrey & others to their list (or pre-list) as zone academy selections without bid matching as they were such a moribund outfit. That only expired last year. 

I don’t like it, but prefer this to a priority or compo pick at the top end to avoid pushing our Freo pick back any further (given Walter will already push it back by one).

So North may end up with pick 2, 3 (mckay compensation) and Sanders, who is easily a top 10 pick. Jack Callinan also falls under their NGA and would be another free hit.

They're doing well out of that.

Can’t see anyone paying McKay enough to trigger that level of compo. He’d need an 800k offer, no one is paying that for him right now.

Giving North the capacity to prelist Sanders (who just won the Larke Medal) will be a way to give North a priority pick without calling it a priority pick. At best the McKay compo would be end of first round. At best. His form has been horrible this year and there are other options for key defenders this year (Ratugolea, potentially Barrass).

This narrative is an absolute myth that refuses to die.

When Frawley left, he was a 25 YO, All Australian Full Back, and one of the very best key defenders in the game. He was absolutely worth Band 1 Compo at the time - not our fault he peaked so young.

McKay is a handy player, but can't see how he falls into the same category.

In the last 10 years, Kangas played finals in 2012, 2014, 2015,2016, including 2x preliminary finals. So it’s only the last 6 years, no finals.  

Compare this to 2013.

The AFL Commission accepted on Monday the recommendation from football operations manager Mark Evans that no priority picks should be awarded under the League's 'special assistance rule'.
 
Melbourne has won just six games in the past two seasons and made a request for the Commission to receive an extra selection at this year's national draft.
 
However under criteria introduced in 2012 that gave the Commission discretion to determine whether a priority pick was needed, it was decided Melbourne was well enough placed to improve  - as reported on AFL.com.au on Sunday.
 
"In coming to a decision, the AFL Commission considered a range of factors including the Melbourne Football Club’s recent performances, but also the opportunity the club has to make improvements in its operations - including its coaching, recruiting, administrative, cultural and welfare programs, as well as significant upside in young talent that is currently on the club’s list," Evans said.

Dees then had another 6 years until 2018 to get finals (12 years without finals). Yes I’m still bitter that the AFL rebuked us yet offers deals to Suns and now probably the Kangas.

On reading, it’s a very very very good write up and summary. Covers most of the top 20-25 players likely in the draft and addresses lots of key players. Only a few extra names imv to throw in.  

Wonder if the Dogs would consider letting Aaron Naughton go for a high pick go given they can pick up another giant FS forward in Croft. Or if the Suns would consider a trade for Ben King given they are getting Jed Walter. Neither side needs key position forwards but both are likely to take them.

There are lots of possibilities, but here are the two I see most likely:

1. Trade up for pick 1 i.e Harley Reid. West Coast might go for it if we get pick 4 and package it up with two of our other assets (our own first rounder this year or next, or Freo’s second pick). West Coast might prefer going for Curtin anyway and using the other picks to strengthen their rebuild. As for us, the Petracca/Oliver/Viney era has been amazing and still has a few years left in it, but we need to bring a genuine A-grade talent in to take over the midfield in five years. Reid is perfect IMO and I’d be happy to go down this path despite the cost.

2. Keep Freo’s pick. My money would be on taking Zane Duursma - from memory he trained with us over summer and played a bit at Casey. I’m sure that works in his favor somewhat and there’s a fair chance he will be best available at Freo’s pick and he fits a need.

Frawley might have been worth first round compo as a player (debatable), but I doubt the contract Hawthorn gave him worthy of Band 1 compensation. The AFL (a corrupt organisation at its core) needed to give us assistance without the PR of giving a priority pick.

It’s a pure points play. Our offer will give them +500 pts on value. We could throw in more and get a Flanders/ Hollands in return helping them with salary cap too. Buts end of the day its what we are prepared to offer and I think we can put a pretty darn good one in.
