I don't think that's Glenferrie, as Hawthorn stopped playing there in 1973.

It's more likely to be Princes Park which was Hawthorn's "home" ground in 1989.

 

Season highlights for 1981 - it wasn't a great year for the Demons so this is not for the squeamish.

Yep Princes Park, Queens Bday 1989. Every ground in 1989 was an absolute bogheap including the G, must have been one hell of a wet winter. I remember going to this game with dad as a kid, got our "revenge" on the Hawks for 87 and 88 but revenge is a bit hollow when they've got the silverware. We got off to a flyer in 1989 then hit a wall, I seem to recall it coinciding with a Garry Lyon injury.

A funny season, we lost to the Cats in round 12 at the G (the week after the Hawks win?) kicking only 2 goals for the whole game. 4 weeks later we played them at Waverley and beat them by 3 points in a bit of a shootout. I have many of these games stashed away on tape/hard drive will have to upload them to YouTube one day (assuming they're not already up).

Channel 7 opened in 1956 in readiness for the Melbourne Olympics but Australian Football was its main sport in the early days. After a bit of chopping and changing, the channel regained the TV rights and it mainly shares telecasting with the Fox Network. This doco was made in 2001 for grand final week.

Do you have a good method for transferring from tape to HD Gonzo?

I have a DVD recorder I purchased years ago which I plug my VCR into and copy to the Hard Drive or direct to DVD. Then I rip the DVD to PC and convert to mkv. Bit of a long process but the best way to retain the original quality as far as I can see. I try and keep it to 1hr per DVD (so half a game) to avoid compression.

I tried years ago getting an adapter to plug the VCR straight into the PC but the quality was nowhere near as good, probably better stuff now and probably also depends on the GPU, RAM etc on your computer

This has been a never ending project for me to find the best way to transfer boxes and boxes of VHS tapes. I've looked at PVRs, Capture cards etc.

I had a good Panasonic DVD recorder years ago which performed very well with an analogue TV but the moment the TV changed to digital the quality dropped off heaps when recording off tv. Maybe the 4:3 to 16:9 issue factor? There has to be a good way.

You need a good quality Analog/Digital converter as a bridge between the two to get a quality conversion ( hopefully the VHS is still running at the right speed)

*  Nine goals EACH in the first quarter!

*  Gus Brayshaw's dad Mark playing for North

*  Garry Lyon not playing (surely injured)

*  Allen Jakovich kicking goals in the magoos but yet to make an impression at senior level

*  No over the top goal celebration carry on

*  We were blessed with a lot of talent and should have won at least one flag in that era

I remember watching the Game live in the ABC newsroom. Rod Owen, such a shame he did his knee after only a 1-2 more games

North buttered up the next week, with Sydney, to kick a combined 32.18 (210) in the first half - the only aggregate of 200 points for a half in VFL/AFL history.

Re @Sir Why You Little's observation, the premature injury loss of Owen did have the (eventual!) compensation of Jako - though another premature loss there followed...

I've got mixed feelings about goal celebrations. I do like the 'get-around-him/her' aspect. Re past 'celebrations', a special oldie is Neil Crompton's run back to the backline in '64. It looked like he didn't quite know what to do (lack of practice?😉)

Boy Nth kick 17 goals 10 and get beaten by 10 goals +. Also I didn't see 1 Melb goal come from the result of a free kick, I wonder if a team has kicked 25 plus goals before with no goals from frees

The following week we would be flogged by grand finalists, Hawthorn. I think we won our last six games by very big margins, but RDB got suspended v Tigers and we lost our mojo.
