CASEY: Rd 07 vs Southport

Great fixturing. Both of our games are basically the same time 😑

The Southport Sharks are a remarkable club given their location in what was essentially rugby league territory when the club was first formed in the early 60s. They have a great facility at their HQ and substantial local support. The VFL side is coached by Steve Daniel and his assistants are Matthew Primus and Matthew Lappin. They will give the Casey Demons a good run for their money.

I’m confident about Casey this week although it’s a pity that the fixturing won’t allow Melbourne fans to get down and watch this historic game between the clubs. Whoever dreamt up a clash game between AFL and VFL affiliates should have their heads read.

Anyhow, full of admiration for Casey who beat Box Hill on their own dung hill last week with a reduced number of MFC players due to the Covid situation and with four local boys making their debut with the club.

It’s a strong team for Casey on Sunday with 16 AFL-listed players:-

What is happening to Hibbo?

Cooked.

When you're constantly injuring your calf at 32 years of age then your chance of coming back to AFL level fully fit is very slim.

This is like the 3rd time he's had the set back already this year.

Old man injury in football terms.

Good to see Ellison get his spot back unlucky to be dropped. Looking forward to seeing how Turner goes I rate him.

That’s a super strong side. That forward line is too good for VFL, particularly if Bedford floats through there. Still no Woewodin though, was his head knock still causing concussion issues? It looked nasty at the time. I don’t recall hearing him listed in our injury report?

EDIT: My mistake Woewodin is listed as one week for concussion on the injury list. Hope he’s recovering well.

Still a strong side but it should be remembered that Bedford almost certainly won't play as he is more likely to be the sub and Dunstan probably won't play either as the carry over emergency.

Gee when you look at that league it really doesn't make sense why they aren't playing a reserves comp.

14 of the AFL clubs are effectively fielding a reserves team either directly or by proxy, and they are travelling across three states. Take them out and you still almost have a full VFL grade with 7 standalones.

Also, why do 3 clubs have a bye? Surely this comp should be playing as many games as possible to ensure that AFL stand by players are match fit and in form?

Anyway, good luck Casey!

Will still be given his chances to get back into the side but there’s a lot of competition for places in Melbourne’s defence and it won’t be easy for him.

Yep, I hadn’t realised both games were basically at the same time. Dumb stuff from the AFL, put the VFL game a couple of hours after the AFL game and not only can fans watch both but subs and emergency players could play! Argh! The AFL make the easy so hard sometimes. Is there some super important event at Casey at 4 that stops them from playing then?!

This will be our biggest test so far.

Agree. Calf injuries can be career killers for older players. Might see a retirement call if it lingers.

Not the worst thing to play your last game in a winning GF. Pretty good memory.

An absolute joke of a competition, though jokes are supposed to be humorous.

Brown hot today - he already has 2 goals.

Jake Bell, Riley Baldi and newcomer Tyler Edwards replace Toby Bedford, Majak Daw and Bailey Laurie.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
