I reckon this is going to enrage supporters all year if they persist with it.  Unless the player directly shouts abuse at the umpire, there is no way umps will be consistent in interpreting swearing and exasperation gestures etc.  For a start, how do they decide at whom were those things directed - could be the player themself, their team mates, or just fate?

Spot on 'sue', the player could be annoyed at himself for giving away a stupid free kick.

And how about a player who has given away an over the shoudler free, calling the infringed player a notorious ducker in frustration or in an attempt to put him off his game. Is that an insult to the umpire? Shouldn't be, but who knows.

The umps, if anything, should continue on from Thu nite and show no tolerance. If they want this rule to work. As it is, the umps' dept has shown it doesn't have the courage of its convictions. Now no-one knows what the rule is. They'll probably go back to punishing grimaces tomorrow.

They should not permit ump abuse. But if they're going to crack down scorched-earth style on anything, a better use of their time and energy would be to target throwing the ball.

Don't worry, they'll find plenty of ways for us to question their consistency and adherence to the rule book in the home & away.

The AFL has to rethink why they're doing this and what reactions to a decision are acceptable.

Is a junior slinging off at the ump a la Jack Riewoldt acceptable? No. It definitely incites reactions. It's a miracle that Riewoldt hasn't been suspended like Toby Greene ......... except that this is the AFL we're talking about.

This should be an interesting match between Bombers & Saints.

I don’t have an issue with the rule per se. I have an issue with the inconsistent interpretations from game to game, from week to week and from Player to Player. 

Bucks seems like he’ll be an asset to the commentary teams.

I'm one of those supporters who was unimpressed and underwhelmed with a number of players from Thursday night's performance against the blues. It highlighted arrogance and a bit of immaturity again.

You see, the same demonlanders were lauding our ferocious, full contact training hit outs in the build up to our prelim and Grand Final matches.. But the same amount of risk is associated in those training sessions as there is in a practice game.

However as soon as we're made to look foolish, disorganised, ill disciplined and lacking intensity and skill level, the same group will make an excuse to say "it's only a practice game and we clearly don't care".

Makes little sense if you ask me and it's not the win or loss I care about. It's the manner in which a number of our key players presented themselves on gameday.

Why would we go harder for longer against North and then not against Carlton? The talk from our club has long been we train how we play and that is with peak intensity. Always. It's about respecting the game and opposition. No? 

What the nuffies forget is that practice games are about tuning up for round 1 and the closer you get to round 1, the higher the intensity levels go. I would say that based on our last game and the doggies last game, they have had far better preparation for our round 1 Grand final rematch. Their game against Brisbane was the complete opposite of ours and for that I think they go in with an advantage. 

I won't be shocked if they jump us because of this. And for us, early season momentum and establishing ourselves as the benchmark is what we must be hell bent on doing if we want to challenge again and keep sides at bay. We want to remain intimidating when opposition come up against us. That can so easily fall away if we start slowly.

So while the result against Carlton means nought, the prep for our lead in may take a hit. Beverage is the kind of bloke who would use that game against Carlton as a reference point to charge up his side pointing out that we looked arrogant, lazy and sloppy. Other teams can do that too.

So it's more than just a practice game.

We did the same thing last year. Seemed to work out pretty well. 

A couple of hours in a months long pre season means jack. The games are largely for the fans and TV. Swans under Roos never won in pre season and always went half arsed.

Players from both sides were having a laugh. We got no injuries 

Other teams have lost players for weeks

It was just a practice match, that had ridiculous umpiring decisions, and we lost by 5 points 

I haven't been watching games today.
