IIRC, Kate Roffey did mention something along the lines that Covid meant that the Meeting could not be held ‘in person’, which I thought was slightly odd at the time.

As an interstate member, I was more than happy that the Meeting was conducted via Zoom.  More inclusive of the wider membership.

Feel like we've had a fair few of these kind of celebrations into the new season type events this year already. It's been done to death now.

If people are still wanting reason to celebrate then watch the replay.

Our sole focus should be on 2022 season.

Not sure how you didn't know, given emails were sent as were postal votes, to all eligible voting members.  I received this email on 7 February

Kate Roffey stated early in the meeting that it wasn't in-person due to MCC/MCG protocols.  Just because cricket was held there maybe there are other issue not resolved in time to allow an open AGM.

Peter Lawrence's result was well behind successful candidates, but at 29% should give the Board something to think about that a not insubstantial number of votes went to a new and 'independent' person.

An effective Board will hear this message. Its also a good sign the members are engaged (those who voted anyway)

Can I add that at least we had an election and not some back room process as occurs usually at the Pies under McGuire.

The main thing out of it was that each section of the Club gave a report or Coaching, Off Field, Playing but very few questions were asked snd even referred to.

Richo Goody Perty and Tim Lamb gave reports and Ben Gibson compared the night which went for about 35 minutes from memory.

As mentioned, 3 existing board members returned in what looked like a landslide on the bar graph displayed.

Pert talked for 20 minutes on Financials. All indicators are promising with 50K crowds at home games listed as 'a challenge'.

All the other metrics were going strong. We made 2.6 (I think) million operating profit. Big turnaround from last year and a lot of it due to plebs like me spending $100's on merch post premiership. Was not expected to make this sort of profit given the pandemic. Missing out on Queens Birthday cost us about 2 Million.

Bentleigh is still an asset till later this year. The money from that sale will be put into a 'futures fund' rather than being spent on operations or jacking up losses into profits.

Richo talked for about 10 minutes on footy related matters. No great revelations.

According to our Constitution, we cannot use electronic voting as 'mail vote' means mail vote according to lawyers. It's a bit like the second amendment in the States I suppose. Anyway, that will be looked at but probably one of those things where members have to get ~80% or something to change? The last change to this to enforce mail votes would have been post Hawthorn merger given what happened that night and to stop that happening again. This was before voting electronically on the internet was available.

Kate spoke of the facilities for the club at Goshes. While the oval is being re-done to be G length and Docklands wide, negotiations are still being done regarding Admin & training facilities but are progressing 'strongly'. Alas, she cannot say more than that as it's a State Government affected project.

Also spoken was MFC commitment to first peoples through various initiatives. Forget the name of that project. The new Oval we built near Alice got flooded and might need more work. Chip in a few dollars if you can when approached.

They have been progressing strongly now for 4 years. 2 elephants to the same mother could have been born in that time. Makes the Stawell gift look like a sloth race.

The people who have been complaining about the costs involved in a postal vote seem to forget the investment it will take to switch to a digital one. It's not small fry - we're among the largest sporting clubs in Australia competing in a multi-billion dollar competition. The cost of lawyers to rewrite our constitution and have it signed off would probably outstrip the cost of a single postal election, let alone the expense of building or licensing a secure online voting platform. I understand that each election is a sunken cost, but we are in a period of budgetary squeeze and it's simply not a priority - rather than a lack of haste as some would like to frame it.

Tend to agree that the cost is dead money but sooner or later it has to be updated.  And we do have $9 mill in cash.  I dont think we would build our own voting platform just ask like one of the share registry's to conduct it.

You get written questions that are submitted and not made public The moderator then chooses which questions to answer to give the veneer of an open and transparent process.

They could do the same with a 'real life' presentation too.

Fact is, if they call for open questions it's no different on zoom.

Well it depends what the set up is.

With an in-person meeting, you can have a microphone set up in a room where people queue up and ask any questions they want - then it is a little more transparent. In an AGM, you might get a good question about the progress or the training base. But you might also get someone asking why Michael Newton isn't getting a game.

I've also seen in-person meetings where people submit questions beforehand, Similar to what can happen in a Zoom / MS Teams forum, questions are more likely to have a screening process where the moderator / PR person can decide what questions are asked.  

It really boils down to being open and accountable versus protecting the brand / controlling the message.

The board under Ms Roffey has set up a sub committee to change what needs to be changed in the constitution, not limited to postal elections.

The constitution is a contract between the the club and it members and it will take 75 percent of members to say yes to the new constitution .

Put the weight of your membership behind the initiative and make sure we have the best constitution for the members and the club in unison
