In 1986 I managed a Sydney-based wine company in Melbourne. One of my clients was the Marquis of Lorne. I was attracted to a woman who worked there. I asked her out, the venue, The Melbourne Concert Hall, the occasion, a Leeuwin Estate sponsored visit by the Staatskapelle Berlin.

She agreed, specified she would pay for her own ticket, then she suggested we have dinner afterwards.

We went to a Bistro in Bourke Street. I ordered Clos De Tart, 1980. It was $125 on the list. Halfway through the dinner a waitress who had been a friend who she hadn't seen in years walked past. She asked the waitress to sit with us and because it was her last shift there she said why not? She then ordered another glass - one of those huge balloony things which held half a bottle - and she poured the rest of the Clos De Tart for her friend, yes, half the bottle.

After I had paid the bill - this was after she had insisted she would pay half - she asked me if I could drop her off at her boyfriend's house.

I mention this in light of this great article about our Capitano Max who at the end of festivities after the GF sat with our Angus on the roof of their hotel and drank a decanted bottle of Clos De Tart. Apparently it costs $1500  these days. It's a Monopole, you see, and that ain't a Polish thing...

well to make it crystal clear the the mcg is 82.2 maxies long x 70.2 maxies wide

Love your work.

Someone needs to offically raise this as a motion at the next MCC general meeting, to have the unit of official measurements of the MCG changed from the metric system (SI units) to Gawn units of maxies.

Journalists aren't renowned for getting their facts right

As quoted from the article in question:

"AFL coverage fails to inspire him. He tries, but listening to commentators with little knowledge of modern football’s arcane strategy makes him groan or curse. It’s not worth the grief."

Though said article was none the less written by a journalist as well!

Best guesses for which coverage / comentators this was aimed at?

I think the writer got Neil Daniher's saying the wrong way round. Wasn't it "when all is said and done, more is said than done"

What ever the correct wording was suposed to be, it should go down in modern footy folklore and replace / contemporise that Kennedy one.

The force lives strong in the Reverend.

With Gawn making those undoutably wise comments, he can expect a lot of flak by the media next year,. Very brave of him.

I'm a bookseller, and my store's got it too. Maybe with all the supply chain madness the publishers have said "screw release dates, if we can get it to you just sell the bloody thing!" It's definitely out there.

Where's your store. Can I visit next weekend when down for the big show

Just name them "gawns". It could become a measure of football grounds, like "sydharbs" is to water capacity.

For large distances, like between grounds, you might need megagawns or gigagawns.

First order of business after replanting the goal posts is to relabel the 50 metre arcs to 24.03 Maxie arcs

Just move them out by another 0.97 maxies and make the a 25 maxie line.  Not sure your average footballer, let alone comentators would understand decimal points and fractions of maxies.

This comment nearly caused me to shed a tear

When his superstar friend Christian Petracca appeared to have the grand final at his feet, Gawn’s three-quarter time message to the ballistic midfielder was one of love: “I’m so proud of the man you’ve become.”

As I said in another post, Max is like a big brother to all the players.

What’s that in real money please?

I think I’ve solved the problem: 6’8” is 208000000 micrometers (give or take)! That’s very tall😀!

his arithmetic is bad too. maxy is 6'10" not 6'8"

Looks like the author reads Demonland, both the Neale Daniher quote and the height have been corrected as noted here, “more” instead of “less” and 6’10. Good work team!!!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
