Off topic but Poland is far from depressing.

Krakow was absolutely majestic, if run down  which happens with medieval towns.

And beautiful women everywhere, with manners and grace.

Take me back!

As the snow wafted down in the gaslights of the town in fairyland reality, as a young man, I had a very romantic night in Heidelberg and a fabulous breakfast the next morning. Hence, fond memories of my own '...student prince...' experience and Germany, in general, several times.

I can relate to your story as I lived in Frankfurt and we often used to bomb down in the VW to Heidelberg (University Town) and got massacred in various "beer halls". Not sure I would have the stamina now. Great memories.

I said to the woman serving at the Polish Cake Shop in Carnegie, My wife is Polish.

Polish girls, she said, they keep you on your toes.

I grimaced: But, I'm not a ballerina.

and btw tell your wife i've just finished james michener's 'poland'. a very good read but a bit depressing.

To be fair, what book about Poland ISN’T depressing?!

I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. I’ve read quite a few Polish novels (translated to English), particularly last year as I lived there for seven months (cheers, Covid). These novels weren’t necessarily depressing, but I find non-fiction books on the history of Poland can be too  depressing.

I don't think they would be too upset as they are both dead.

Just like to point out double standards. Hilarious to make Italians the punchline but if it was Sudanese, Indigenous or maybe gay or transgender the lynch mob would have been out. Where is Flaubert and his long winded history lesson or bleeding heart Dieter when you need them ?

Hyperbole. Surely you are joking.

Italians clearly do not have a long history of prejudice, violence, bigotry, slavery, etc against them. No where near apples with apples

Ribbing italians for being poor fighters during the war is on a par with Melbourne supporters and the ski fields.

Just for the record, I found the reference to Italians in war in poor taste: as I've said, my post has nothing to do with war, it was an attempt at celebrating Melbourne Football club players of German descent. None of them had anything to do with WW2.

Also, if you wanna take it further, tell me how you'd behave if you were sent from a village in Puglia or Sicily or Sardinia to fight for the Nazis at Stalingrad.

Lived in Berlin for a while.  Used to be up listening or watching us getting pantsed over breakfast most weekends.

I can report that a sherrin has passed east to west and back again through the Brandenburger Tor, and a few other sites besides that.  Flughafen Tegel, Teufelsberg, Alexanderplatz…

I was there when the Soccer World Cup was on. Magnificent. Took about a month to recover from that.

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
