Secondly, as I replied, there is no evidence that Jackson will re-sign for 2 years if we don't get what we want. Our best case scenario is that Jackson's management have told Freo that the Dees have been respectful to Jackson, and fair compensation is warranted. Two 1st rounders (both in the teens + steak knives) or a 1st round pick in the top 10 and a 2nd rd pick + steak knives. I've never known a club that's lost an uncontracted player that's "held the upper hand" in trade negotiations. The point was clear and is not without precedent. Jacko has a good relationship with club & players. Is grateful to be a premiership player. Would be leaving with mixed feelings. And does not want to leave on terms that would burn relationships with all. The agreement of find a fair deal, or I will sign on for 1-2 years and try for a trade again then is very possibly what is going on. Further, without question he is worth Young and a first rounder. A 20 year old, who has potentially shown more than any other 20 year old ruckman at the same age for the last couple of decades. Edited August 1, 2022 by 1964_2 1 Quote
Queanbeyan Demon 7,030 Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 I have not read every page in this thread, so this may have been addressed earlier. Correct me if I’m wrong, it seems to me, based on the reading of the CBA between the AFL and the AFLPA, that Jacko can’t go anywhere without the MFC facilitating a deal. If we’re not satisfied, he stays. Is that correct? Quote

Matt 424 Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 I would love it if he did a Buddy, and went to a team no one was talking about (West Coast) 1 Quote
Adam The God 30,747 Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 Hayden Young is a good young talent, but could we fit Rivers, Salem, Bowey and Young in the same side? I don't think so. And I love our three aforementioned from a defensive perspective and certainly in Salem and Bowey's case, their kicking. 5 Quote

Obviously, they can't blatantly take the [censored], but any eventual trade will be skewed in Freo's favour and there's not much we can do about it. Look at it from Freo's perspective - why would they give up one of their most promising young players (contracted) when they don't have to? Any deal will be centred around picks, possibly with a fringe player thrown in. Freo will probably look at wheeling and dealing picks with clubs bidding on academy/ fs prospects to acquire trade currency in the mid-late first round. Jake Lever is probably the most valid recent comparison. The eventual trade was Lever, pick 37 (Petty) + future 3rd rounder for picks 10 (2017) and 19 (2018). 21 minutes ago, Queanbeyan Demon said: Correct me if I’m wrong, it seems to me, based on the reading of the CBA between the AFL and the AFLPA, that Jacko can’t go anywhere without the MFC facilitating a deal. Cameron was a proven key forward and had won the Coleman, but Jackson has a rising star and a premiership. It’s also hard for Freo to argue that Jackson is still unproven when they are offering him such a big contract. The only problem with that is apart from the maybe a player like Meek being included in the deal it hard to see what more Freo would be able to give us. Also GWS matched the offer for Cameron. I don’t think we will match the offer Jackson. At this stage I’d be happy to get 3 first round picks even if none of them were inside 10. I would be even happier if Freo doesn’t win another game this season and their draft selection gets better. We dont have to match anything. He is not a Restricted Free Agent. 1 Quote

Older demon 2,828 Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 3 first-rounders or even 2, I would question the value. We have a very good young list and note Casey are undefeated and I am not sure we need any more youngsters. Certainly will be nice to get back into the first round or keep one and trade the other(s) to move up the order. It may even be better to use whatever we get for LJ into a ready-made player to fill a gap. I also hope we tie Van Rooyen up early so he doesn't want to head back west. 1 Quote

I would be even happier if Freo doesn’t win another game this season and their draft selection gets better. Good post There's no doubt that Cameron is a better player than Jackson right now, but ultimately, Jackson could prove to be a better player than Cameron (from an overall perspective) But it's length of service which is the big factor as well ... whoever might get Jackson might have him for close on 14-15 years at (possibly) B+ level. Where as Cameron almost certainly won't play any more than about 7 years (max?) for Geelong Sort of reminds me of the swapping of Wayne Schwass & Shannon Grant trade Grant played 11 years at North whilst Schwass only played 4.5 years at Sydney. So North won out of that deal (if it was a straight swap) I'm basing my scenario on Jackson definitely becoming a B+ player soon enough. Could be wrong of course but if we undervalue him (which I don't reckon we will) we could lose out in a trade But there again, it's the sum of all the parts with regards to one off season of trading ... and often we won't know how a trade turns out until a few years later When we swapped pick 2 for Tyson & Salem it did look for a while that GWS might have won that trade But Salem is a gun and Tyson gave us 4 reasonable years and then we ended up trading him (in a roundabout way) for Preuss who we then traded for a pick which we used to secure Ben Brown That's a win As for Jackson, he's not necessarily out the door anyway. There's a good chance he will remain with us especially if a deal can't be done. I'm reasonably confident that there is an offer on the table from elsewhere (probably Freo) 1 Quote
Lefty 413 Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 I just can't see him staying at this point. If he was he would have signed already. My only question is will he still go if we aren't compensated well? That would be a souring point for me. I don't begrudge him wanting to go home but he needs to look after us too. Quote
