There’s more to come but can you pick the ODD SPOT?

* "You've got the best coach in Australian being paid $900,000 to have a holiday in America before he comes home and coaches another team. I can't get my head around how Hawthorn have fallen apart like this" — Kane Cornes re Alastair Clarkson

* DONE DEAL | The deal to make Jordan Dawson a Crow has been lodged, with the Swans receiving Melbourne's future 1st round pick. — Daniel Cherny

* "Just like their interest in Chad Wingard, Greater Western Sydney has explored interest in Luke Breust over the last day. Would similarly have been willing to use pick 13 in a deal, but like Wingard, Breust has been reluctant to move from Hawks." — Cal Twomey

* "I can't see it happening at the moment, I think there's too much difference in the valuation from North Melbourne and St Kilda."  — Riley Beveridge on the Tristan Xerri

Kane Cornes making sense?

Posted

* "Jonathon Ceglar and a future fourth-round selection, in exchange for a future round three selection tied to Brisbane next year." — Cal Twomey

Yes, they mentioned who the future selection was tied to. Ceglar will be 31 in February and joins Geelong. I haven’t done the maths yet but is it possible the average age of their list just dropped? Surely not?

"I believe the Lynch deal is done - it will see the Hawks trade the Brisbane future third round pick and their own future third pick in exchange for Lynch, Freo’s future third and a Gold Coast future fourth. " — Cal Twomey

That’s Collingwood’s Lynch to Hawthorn. No effect on the Cats’ average age.

I don’t understand this. Lynch is a damn good ruckman. Possibly the only one who had the better of Max Gawn all year.

Not sure he beat Maxy but he absolutely made it hard for him and found plenty of the ball around the ground. Then didn’t play for the rest of the season.

Collingwood not playing him at all in a dead season then shipping him away is really confusing. 5 more games might’ve got a side to come calling with a future 2nd or an early 3rd.

Yes. Where does this leave Collingwood’s ruck stocks? They have Grundy, Darcy Cameron and Mason Cox who according to most judges, is a tall who is no good in the ruck. By the time they use up their draft points to acquire Nick Daicos, they’re not going to be in a position to pick up any ruck gems.

Most likely they'll draft someone with a late or rookie pick and start the whole process again, will be interesting to see if Kreuger is a fix for their key forward issues.

The Daicos situation timing up with them tumbling down the  ladder really hurts them. They'll still get him at a great discount, but it means they've only had last years picks which weren't in the top 10 and Daicos to start a rebuild. They can't really point to a whole bunch of really high end picks. Will be interesting to see what their plans are for 2022. The Hawks kind of put the cat out of the bag that they want to play kids next year rather than push hard for wins, the Pies still have enough experience to push for finals if they were healthy and committed.

Oh my, Matt Rendell just said on SEN that we acquired Dunstan so we can play Petracca or Oliver off half back .....

* DONE DEAL | Peter Ladhams has been traded from Port Adelaide to Sydney.

Port will get pick 12 and a future 3rd.

Swans will get pick 16 and Ladhams.

This seems interesting to me.  Ladhams probably the best ruck prospect on the market and can play forward.  To move from 16 to 12 - is that an indication that Port are keen on someone at 12 who won't last to 16?

a lot of average players moving around.  worst trade period in years.  Pies and Hawks etc stuck with average lists

Mac Andrew at 12 to beat off GWS at 13?

First time in 5 years I CGAFabout the trade period.

And thank god for that because the quality available was absolute rock bottom. Cerra and Dawson very good pick ups. The rest is just a lot of shuffling of deck chairs.

The pool of genuine ruckmen in the current draft is not deep. Remember, the mid season draft took some of the best prospects out of the picture 6 months early. See below - players bolded can play in the ruck -

2021 MID-SEASON DRAFT SELECTIONS

1. North Melbourne - Jacob Edwards (Sandringham - athletic key forward/ruck)
2. Hawthorn - Jai Newcombe (Box Hill Hawks - powerful inside midfielder)
3. Collingwood - Ash Johnson (Sturt - high leaping third tall forward)
4. Adelaide - Patrick Parnell (Murray Bushrangers - aggressive rebounding defender)
5. Gold Coast - Ned Moyle (Oakleigh Chargers - competitive ruck)
6. Carlton - Alex Mirkov (Carlton VFL - project ruck)
7. St Kilda - Max Heath (Sandringham Dragons - aggressive ruck)

8. GWS - James Peatling (GWS VFL - damaging utility)
9. Essendon - Sam Durham (Richmond VFL - skilful general defender/outside midfielder)
10. Richmond - Matthew Parker (South Fremantle - talented forward)
11. West Coast - Will Collins (Swan Districts - negating defender)
12. Sydney - Lachlan McAndrew (Sydney VFL - project ruck)
13. Port Adelaide - Jed McEntee (Sturt - small pressure forward/midfielder)
14. Brisbane - Kalin Lane (Claremont - competitive tap ruck)
15. Melbourne - Kye Declase (Werribee - tall utility)
16. North Melbourne - Charlie Ham (Geelong Falcons - quick general defender/outside midfielder)
17. Hawthorn - Jackson Callow (Norwood - strong marking key position player)
18. Collingwood - Aiden Begg (Eastern Ranges - competitive key position player)
19. Gold Coast - pass
20. Carlton - Jordan Boyd (Footscray VFL - rebounding defender/small forward)
21. St Kilda - Cooper Sharman (Oakleigh Chargers/Woodville-West Torrens - high leaping third tall forward)
22. Essendon - pass
23. West Coast - Connor West (West Perth - speedy outside midfield)
24. Melbourne - Daniel Turner (Murray Bushrangers - strong marking third tall defender)
25. Carlton - pass
26. St Kilda - pass
27. St Kilda - pass

A mate of mine is involved in the system of one of the NAB League Under 19 squads and his view is that there’s not only an extreme shortage of capable ruck prospects but also some of the clubs were using “short” ruckmen. Only a few decent candidates and the older ruckmen in the pool are mainly duds.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
