Very early in his career Jacob Mollison worked for a bank and I met him at a property settlement. He didn’t quite let on that he supported Melbourne but mentioned he thought there was a family connection. Perhaps he was being diplomatic but I have to say that I’ve never felt that he was biased in our favour or against which suggests to me that he’s a very good umpire. Razor Ray is fine but I think he’s been ruled out because he missed the two preliminary finals.

Stevic’s good - take your pick of the others. At that level they’re all pretty good.

Could be related to former Reserves player and Director, the late Rick Mollison.

In terms of recent form in Bulldogs games:

  • Elim Final vs Ess:  Frees 22/14.  Umpires: Rosebury, Stevens, Williamson
  • Second semi vs Lions:  Frees:  28/19.  Umpires:  Stevic, Williamson, Findlay
  • Prelim vs Port:  Frees:  16/22.  Umpires:  Rosebury, Stevic, Findlay.

The Port game is the odd one out as being a bit more balanced.

Lost track of how many goals Bulldogs kicked from frees vs Ess which Rosebury officiated.  At least 4 before half time.  Didn't change the result but the goals gave the bulldogs the momentum/score board pressure at an important stage in the match.

As others have mentioned Stevic was part of the gifted 2016 premiership to the bulldogs.

Can't say any of the above gives me much joy.

Is any of these guys the foghorn ump with the really deep voice?

Nah, that is Jeff Dalgleish.

Nichols is ok to us

I'm a firm believer that satire should be as understated as possible, but you still have to give a slight hint DeezNuts.

Also, why do the commentators always refer to Stevic as Matt Stevic in full? Until this thread I've never been sure if his name was Matt Stevic, or Matstevic with a mystery given name.

The same thing makes me okay with being screwed over for Mac Andrew as an NGA, as I'm sure he will take on the unlikely Scottish name of McAndrew during his career, and I get annoyed by small things, apparently.

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Who cares what the Umpires do as we will be that far in front any biased umpiring will not help the puppies.

This isn't great for us.  I went through the stats...   I know there are 3 umpires each game, I don't have access to individual decisions to go deeper.  If the FF/FA difference was less than 3 I called that EVEN/NEUTRAL.

FOR THE DEMONS

Mollison has umpired us 5 times this year.  These games were mostly neutral (1 negative with Stevic).

We've had Rosebury only once this year for a -8 count (R12 v Lions)

We've had Stevic twice for a -7 (R18 v Hawks) and a -6 (R23 v Cats)

So one neutral, two negative.

FOR THE BULLDOGS

Mollison umpired them only once for a neutral count (R6)

Rosebury has umpired them 8 times this year and it's not pretty.  Even, +9, +3, +10, +13, +3, +8 and a -6 (prelim)

Stevic has umpired them 3 times this year for  a -3, +9 and -6 (prelim).

So one very positive, two neutral.

SUMMARY

Rosebury has been involved in a lot of games for the dogs this year where they have had a very good run.  The only game he umpired us wasn't in our favour.

Stevic has had two games this year adjudicating our games and neither were in our favour.

Mollison has been involved in mostly neutral games.

This excellently researched post worries me a lot. Especially in view of HB's next post, where he mentions that Stevic was involved in the reprehensible pro-Dogs umpiring in the 2016 Grand Final between Dogs and Swans.

I also referred to this in my (much ignored) post on.."how do the Bulldogs do it?"

I know it's no use worrying about the umpires, but these facts revealed by "Hells Bells" should be made as public as possible to make sure such gross inequity is not repeated in the Grand Final.

The argument that you get the frees if you're in first for the ball is fallacious. There was little difference in total disposals in 2016 GF, but a huge difference in frees .Ditto in round 19 between us and Dogs.

I just can't help worrying that the trend of the Bulldogs getting an armchair ride will be continued  on Saturday night, and the better side will lose, as in round 19.

And I keep thinking there's an 'R' missing in your name, too.

I think the Matt Stevic thing also extends to some footballers. For example, have you ever heard Riley Knight being named without his first name? Conversely, some less than informed football commentators struggle to understand that Neal-Bullen is a complete surname.

Mollison for 5 of our games and our free kick count was -5 different, Roesbury was -8 (1 game) and Stevic was -7 (2 games).

For the Dogs, Rosebury was +44 (8

My goodness. To think I was worried about Nicholls being on the case.

Rosebury stats look scary.....minus eight for ONE game. Was every call he made against us? I wonder which game?

Plus 44 to the dogs in eight.

Booo.

Was Rosebury involved in our last clash with the dogs?

The umpiring in that one was terrible.

Booo.

It was the Brissy game, so a game we won by a bit but if we had kicked straight we would have won by a lot.

Generally speaking our results with the 3 umpires have been pretty similar to the Dogs, just they get more frees.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
