My guess is that it's not the selection process that's troubling Lyon. I presume he's concerned about the reason for the shift in thinking which suggests there are people on the Board who don't want him. If I were Lyon, I wouldn't want to coach any club that didn't have unanimous Board support for my appointment. I think he's been wise to avoid a fractured club.

Yeah, it sounds like Ross was told that if Clarko said no, the job was his, and the concerns around him have forced the blues to re-think and rather than approve the Sayers plan to just sign Ross Lyon, the board has forced the process to be undetaken due to the concerns and division. and Ross is obviously frustrated because he was under the impression he was being head hunted. I still think there is a live possibility that Ross Lyon ends up being the senior coach of Carlton though.

They haven't got the guts to appoint another untried coach.

Yze won't be going there.

I hope Lyon goes there and they screw it up again.

If it's not Clarkson or Lyon, is it Buckley or Voss now?

And funnily enough would Collingwood have preferred Lyon to Macrae had Ross not appeared to have been wedded to Carlton?

Both Carlton and Collingwood seem like clubs lost in the wilderness, similar to the journey Melbourne went through post the Gutnik years. Only a desperado would apply for a coaching gig at these symbols of dysfunction.

100% agree with the mental crushing this would have on anyone. No doubt the 500 off K he will b paid out will help in fincancial security but no one likes to have their profession publicly humiliated and degraded. I suppose thats the industry butstill pretty sas for him.

Ross Lyon comes across as a dog of a guy. Not quite Malthouse level.

Why do you say Malthouse is a dog?? I’ve heard people say this about him before but I don’t think I’ve heard any stories to go along with it. Why is he disliked?

I see a lot of similarities with Carlton right now to when we hired Neeld.

Old coach fired after only a few years
Bring in the club legends to pick the new coach
Experienced senior coach pulls out of the race because the selection process seems a bit scuffed (Sheedy and the powerpoint)

I hope for their sake it goes a little better than it did for us.

Don't understand why Buckley would want to follow the Malthouse route and go to Carlton. Better off earning big bucks in the media, then coming back in 3-4 years at somewhere that isn't a complete basket case.

His grandkids went to the same primary school as our kids. On grandparents day, he turned up and ate all the biscuits.

Enough said.

I don't think the other grandparents would have minded as much.

Is Justin Leppitsch under consideration or was he burned by his experience in Brizvegas when they had a cr@p list?

Good pick up - his commentary on Ch 7 has been very insightful....covers the game like a coach...

I thought he is a package deal with McCrae (ie Collingwood bound?)

Was assistant coach at Richmond during their flag era and is highly regarded. However has moved out of coaching for media gigs.

And now Cain Liddle has left Carlton, according to AFL's own Twitter account.

Things going swimmingly at Princes Park.

Out Liddle in Cook, I reckon AFL might get involved to give Cook a push to save this sinking ship.

Anyone know if they had a "Is Teague the right guy..." thread on Carlton BigFooty?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
