The thing is lets say Cerra does nominate Melbourne and that's the only place he says he wants to go. We hold the upper hand, not Freo, he is out of contract. Freo's options are either:

a) Accept the reasonable offer that we make

b) let him walk for nothing where he likely gets picked up by another club in the national or pre season draft.

Players don't get traded to clubs they don't want to go, if he nominates Melbourne, Freo can't just trade him to Carlton for Pick 6, that just doesn't happen.

Unfortunately for Freo they have to deal with what we have to offer, that's basically their only option because we have the whip hand. What we have to offer is a future first, a 2nd, probably another 2nd that we get for Weid. 2 of those picks is a reasonable offer that they will have to accept because that's the best return they will get.

Just remember who we could be potentially dealing with here that is going to cause the biggest road block..  and that's Peter Bell.

They have already announced that their asking price will be high. To me I would not be surprised if they demand two 1st round draft picks.

Unfortunately I just can't ever see us pleasing Freo with the lack of draft capital we have on our plate.

It really is going to take potentially a player trade out.

Wouldn't be totally shocked if we traded out a Harmes to GCS, or a Sparrow to Adelaide if we won the flag, in order to bundle up some picks.

Just a gut feel...

Looking at it another way, we are not desperate to get him: he should be itching to come and play for us. In my opinion, Jackson, Rivers and Kossie are all better or at least as good as Cerra - no way we should be trading any of them out and I don’t think the club ever would.

It really is interesting position especially considering we recently traded them Hogan.

We are speculating obviously but it would be interesting negotiations, if push came to shove would they let Cerra walk?

PS is Cerra contracted? I assume he is not which decreases their hand a little.

I hear what you’re saying, but I think Sparrow is being modelled as the next Viney and will be integral to the team going forward. Similarly, Harmesy is becoming that unselfish role player that are so important in great teams. I wonder if they’d look at trading Weideman to GCS - even though the club insists they want to keep him?

Maybe that's why Joel Smith is getting a game in the backline at the moment dazzle? (tongue in cheek)

cerra looks to be just too expensive ($s and picks) to make it worthwhile

we shouldn't also forget that we have a few potential good ones still in development that we can back in

taylor and co can always unearth a diamond in the draft esp given the lack of exposure of many this year due to covid

The Weid a future first and second round picks plus our 2 second round picks should do it surely?

Can we trade future 1st and 2nd? I thought trading subsequent picks after trading 1st was no longer permitted. Not sure

I'm not against the idea of bringing Cerra in but it has to be on ours terms.

We're not desperate so:

  • Cerra has to accept a sensible salary
  • Freo have to accept our 2nd rounder and future first. No player goes in the opposite direction (unless it's the Weid which i doubt they'll accept)

The only way i see this happening is if Cerra is prepared to walk and force Freo's hand. I think his relationship with Freo is good so i doubt he would do this.

Carlton still very much favorites for mine

Good point you make there; Peter Bell come Trade Week:

Freo have lost (for whatever reason) some good players and high picks over the last 3-4 years. Lachie Neale, pick 6 (Hogan), Brad Hill, Ed Langdon. There's probably others, but can't recall off the top of my head. They also got 2 for Lachie Weller, and Lobb was meant to save their forward line at one point

They are not shy about doing significant deals. Bell is a ripper at chest beating and making demands.

100% agree.

We speculate on this trade, but it has to be on our terms, if he is requesting a 4year deal @ 750K then it simply will not happen and we would be negligent as a club to allow that to happen.

Once he nominates we have the upper hand or Freo risk him walking away for nothing. So its the contract that will be the key puzzle piece.

Love the fact that Cerra wants to come to us, but like many here I just can't see the deal getting done.

And the big reason is that last year we traded out Josh Mahoney - the best wheeler and dealer in the business.

In fact I very much doubt we will see any side deals of note this year because of his absence.

It hasn't been reported anywhere that Cerra wants to come to us...

Martin, Saad and now Cera - is this some elaborate MFC plot to drive up the price of Carlton recruits, get in the ear now of some young player we liked but couldn't draft (why not let Carlton deal with Kemp's rehab, right?), and then swoop when the Blues ultimately go the way of Collingwood last year?

Even if we can get a deal done (say bundle picks for lower picks trade, Weideman trade etc), I am not sure how we are going to pay him? We have so many quality players coming out of contract soon and a list full of stars and rising stars. Cerra would need to be getting paid well unders if he wants to play for us.

I’m also wary of clubs/managers using us to create leverage in negotiations without us being a realistic option in trade.

Managers will do the work before trade period to work out realistic landing spots for their clients, and if Cerra just wants to get to Melbourne (the town, not the team) Carlton makes good sense in terms of a straightforward deal.

If Cerra does decide he wants Melbourne the club ahead of all others, we’d probably have to work to get some picks to get a deal done, but it’s possible. I just don’t get the vibe that Cerra’s particularly strong on us as a destination.

I can let you all know that the Dees presented to Adam & his Manager at 5 pm last Friday and the feedback is that it was equal to or possibly the best presentation that Robbie as ever seen.
Let me tell you that we are doing everything right, it might come down to us just not having the compensation to satisfy Freo.

I can also say that Tarrant from the Kangaroos will most likely be at Tigers next year. Tigers keen on Tarrant, if not him, then Talia.

Great Intel mate.

Do you mind me asking who was present from our end? Goody? Yze?

My other question if Cerra does nominate Melbourne, is their a likely chance if we cannot find a suitable deal he either goes to the PSD, or nominates another Vic based club that is suitable to freo?

I believe Cerra's management is the same as Petracca's?

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
