What a rollercoaster.

At half time I remember sitting there thinking FFS, they have thrown this one, because the one wood to our games this season has been never to let a team get more than ~20 points up on us.  While I thought it was possible that we'd come over the top of the dad's army in the second half, to be honest, when we hadn't pegged back their lead to less than 20 points at 3/4 time I thought we were pretty stuffed and would just be playing the last quarter to regain a bit of form and pride.

Once we got them back to within 14 points, with soo much time I thought F this is game on baby, but once Sparrow missed his shot on goal and they started to play keepings off in that last 2mins I thought, bloody hell, I think we've blown our chance here.

When Maxy marked, weirdly I actually had reasonable confidence he would kick it, but not the sort of confidence as if it was a Salem or Big Ben Brown.  Seeing that kick go through the two big sticks was just a moment of pure elation and I was screaming my head off, fist pumping and jumping all over the lounge in a mad flurry.

 

Hope the players know how to put things back in the bag, because I'm still buzzing from this win.

Wasn't it King earlier this season who was touting some statistic about the top teams vs the bottom teams like it was some magical revelation, when in fact it was exactly what you would see in any comp, of any size, in any sport, anywhere in the world!

Max's leadership stood tall in so many ways.   

In the last quarter his actions said:  Follow me lads.  And they duly followed.  Time and time again he willed them on.

The 44 pt comeback and the mobbing of Max after the siren will galvanise the team for a long time to come.  And send a few shock waves through the other finalists.

I particularly liked that after the siren he was like a shepherd lovingly looking after his flock.  

He has been a very good captain.  Saturday was his breakout game as a Leader.

May has waited his whole career to play finals. He’s 29. He would have felt immense happiness at that moment. In fact when Gawn marks it, May is behind him on the goal line (assuming set play to take away a defender) and he’s jumping up and down and then goes over to Gawn to pump him up.

Would love to know what May said to Max.  From the hugs it looked like they share a special brotherly love.

We have various players as designated leaders but how good is it for our young team to have a few 'mature' heads in those two to look up to.  The trust and belief would be sky high right now.  

I jumped on the Dyl & Friends podcast bandwagon last week. The interview with Max is well worth a listen. Interesting when he talks about being made captain, and that others have very different styles of leadership, including Viney who has a lead by example style. I think Max was leading by example on Saturday.

Also interesting that he said he felt his job was to make new draftees comfortable, and wanted them to come in to a very different environment and culture than he did when he was drafted.

Max grappled with and held at many contests. One throw-in in the 3rd, Hawkins was rucking and basically just whacked Max's arm. Didn't even attempt the contest.

With the umps miced up and no crowds its possible to hear just how absurd the "nominated ruckmen" rule is. Why wait for someone to pipe up and nominate? Just throw the thing up or in. If a team isn't ready, hard cheese.

I just went and watched this clip on YouTube out of interest. It was at Waverley and you couldn't hear the siren sound!!!! Pity no-one thought to fix it!!

A little bizarre of them to pluck that out and make an article but I was screaming at the TV on a number of decisions that were throws/incorrect disposal/HTB. That block on Max Gawn where he was in perfect position to mark the ball but the Cats player blatantly blocked him out of the contest gifted them a goal. 

The lack of consistency with the deliberate OOB really p***ed me off. 

Finally got through this thread and had difficulty responding but all now appears ok.

The half time interview with Danger I stated to my friend that he looked absolutely exhausted. I said they are old we are doing nothing wrong just that 10 minutes of brilliance aided by the umpiring.. His grey face and sweat brow reminded me of me after a hard Squash game when I have given everything.

They are old I said and we should run over them. Didn't really expect the win but also said this will really be the test.

This result is a changing of the guard and if you have been following my post the last two years justifies my optimism that this is the beginning of a decade of dominance. 

Just can't wait for the flag, if we are unable to attend we will still celebrate for months until the next one which we will attend. In the mean time as Trac said we will be able to wear ouclours with a renewed pride and confidence.

It's probably been stated multiple times in this thread already, but the deliberate out of bounds rule was applied extremely inconsistently in the favour of our opponent yet again against Geelong.  There were also multiple other occations it cost us, not just in the dying minutes.  Chris Scott doesn't have any leg to stand on questioning the validity of that 50m penalty, unless he's also brings the paid/not paid deliberate out of bounds into the conversation.

Thankfully unlike against Adelaide, it didn't cost us the game this time, but it's a bit of a trend that we get such a rubbish rub of the green with these decisions compared to our opponents.

The holding of Clarry reverse free was just another in a conga line of ridiculous frees / non frees including Selwood's rugby pass on the wing that everyone missed including all paid AFL representatives on the Chanel 7 commentary team.

After Goodwin wins 3 premierships he will have the smarts to start succession planning after seeing what Roos did and the contrast to what's happened with Clarko.

Understand you were just making good on a request, however, personally I'm a bit over the whole Titanic thing (so 2018).

I think the respective clips from that final kick of Rd 1, 2018 and Rd 23, 2021 would make some great bookends within a video collage of the team's journey over the past 5 or so years, but I think we need to wait so that the closing scene could be the cup being raised.

This win in Saturday was such a great moment, but I really love how the players have expressed that the jobs not done yet.

Just another 3 more wins between now and the end of this season to make good on a lifetime of supporting the Red and Blue.

It was interesting listening to Viney on the Footy Show yesterday.  The question was what changed at half time, his answer was we were to along the lines of we were to predictable with our taps and clearance set up, Geelong was just picking us off.  They changed this at half time to be more aggressive with the tap and clearance, hitting the ball forward and Max grabbing a few out of the ruck.

Geelong was just picking Max off in the second qtr, I hate the hit that just drops the ball at the back of the centre circle, every time a team gets dominance in the centre they pick this tap off, when we get aggressive with our tap work it is less predictable. 

Tmac is a worry, if he can't run around he struggles, that is his strength, he looked like a block that couldn't accelerate.  Hoping the run helped, you would almost add Melksham to tag Rich.

I think I feel a bit more for Jayden Hunt more then anyone.

In 2018 we were three weeks from playing finals and he damages his ankle against Sydney which ruled him out of the finals campaign. 

Plays all year this year and a big contributor towards our success and yet hurts his ankle 3 weeks ago again, and in serious doubt not play finals.

Hunt has been at this football club since the rebuild took place when Paul Roos came on board. 

I like Steven May, but I'm hurting more for Jayden Hunt.

Oh I totally agree. I mean you can mount a case for Jones and Jetta too.

But I haven't ruled Hunt out. If he can recover, he will come back. Nobody has made a strong claim for his role, and he can absolutely play more defensively if we need him too and let Bowey play more attacking. And Bowey may tire anyway.

I haven't written Hunt off yet!
