Dogs win: we drop to 2nd BUT remain 2 games clear of 3rd spot.

Cats win: we remain 1st BUT just 1 game clear of 3rd.

Dogs for mine.

    If we finish 3rd or 4th, but the top 2 are the Dogs and Geelong, it won't matter so much. Almost 0% chance of a Geelong v Melbourne QF being played at GMHBA, and even if a Dogs v Melbourne QF is played at Marvel, we play Marvel well enough.

    My main concern is missing the top 4 altogether, which we will put in jeopardy if we keep losing games to bottom 10 sides. 

    Having said all that, my preference is a Dogs win. Geelong scare me more than the Dogs, so the more games Geelong lose, the better IMO. Same principle for the West Coast v Richmond game.

    To elaborate: 

    We have four matches against top eight sides. Unfortunately, three of those are on the opposition dung heaps: Adelaide Oval (Port) which should hold no fears given we have played well over several years there; the Eagles in Perth which is truly tough but I still have fond memories of wins there despite the prelim, and Geelong's paddock. We also have the Bulldogs at the 'G. If Covid allows the club could actually make that an earner.

    So as the ladder now sits we play 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th.

    Outside the eight we have 10th, 11th and 12th (Giants, Bombers, Crows) and 15th (Suns) and 17th (Hawks) with all but Suns at the G.

    The Bullies have a similar draw with Cats and Eagles away and four top eight sides including Port and Swans, but they have a bit less travel in their fixture against top eight sides  (Port and Sydney at Marvel). They do however travel to Launceston where the Hawks are a challenge.

    I'd like the extra breathing space a Dogs win would bring.

    Prefer any result that maintains space between us and the rest to insure for losses. After yesterday’s insipid loss one is a bit more nervous about Essendon, Eagles (who are gettable), Hawthorn. Can see the rationale for a Dogs win to have 2 games separation though.

    would rather we win the games we should, like yesterday’s as the rest takes care of itself

    Any results that increase separation between us and 3rd and below are no brainers to consider.

    Cats big strength is the dogs big weakness. unless the Dogs can get incredible midfield dominance, i think the Cats forward line will get hold of the Dogs.

    Prefer Dogs to win.

    Absolutely no difference between finishing 1st and second.

    We need to keep an eye out for West Coast. Don't want them to get on a complete roll and finish top 2.

    As long as they don't get obliterated in the middle, the Cats should win. That forward line is sublime.

    I have a feeling that Geelong will be very tough to beat from here on in. A very well-drilled side that has found its feet as the season has gone on.

    The Bulldogs are good but have all of their eggs in the midfield basket, which makes them vulnerable.

    How about we just focus on playing good footy. We just played footy that was vfl standard for 2 hours. If we keep that up we won't come close to finishing top 4 and will get smashed by the bombers in 2 weeks time.

    doing a ladder predictor, got us finishing 3rd behind geelong and footscray; prelim against the dogs and i suspect it'll be played at the mcg over the docklands carpark because the cats will play a 'home' final on their own dung heap against either the pear (which is what my predictor mocked out) or the bears

    The squiggle auto predict has us 3rd with Dogs 1, Cats 2. Dees Cats Qualifying. Yikes.

    I never want Geelong to win. I'd only make an exception if it benefited us and i can't remember that ever happening. Not recently anyways. 

    The cats are old and the season is long. They'll run out of legs in my opinion.

    Whether we place top 2 is entirely up to us so that isn’t a thing I care about.

    However, the cats didn’t move this from Geelong even though they would get a crowd in a different state.

    So for the good of the game I hope the Dogs win.

    comes down to where you think Brisbane is going to finish and whether a Geelong win provides an additional buffer allowing Geelong to finish one or two.

    If you don't think Brisbane can finish 1 or 2 then it's not that important. Similarly if you think Geelong can't finish top 2 then a Dogs win might be better.

    The Adelaide and Collingwood losses could come back to bite us at seasons end but who knows.

    If Brisbane finishes 2nd it might be better to finish fourth than third

      Round 11, the second week of The Sir Doug Nicholls Round, kicks off on Thursday night with the Cats hosting the Bulldogs at Kardinia Park. Geelong will be looking to to continue their decade long dominance over the Bulldogs, while the Dogs aim to take another big scalp as they surge up the ladder. On Friday night it's he Dreamtime at the 'G clash between Essendon and Richmond. The Bombers will want to avoid another embarrassing performance against a lowly side whilst the Tigers will be keen to avenge a disappointing loss to the Kangaroos. Saturday footy kicks off as the Blues face the Giants in a pivotal clash for both clubs. Carlton need to turn around their up and down season while GWS will be eager to bounce back and reassert themselves as a September threat. At twilight sees the Hawks taking on the Lions at the G. Hawthorn need to cement themselves in the Top 4 but they’ll need to be at their best to challenge a Brisbane side eager to respond after last week’s crushing loss to the Dees on their home turf. The first of the Saturday night double headers opens with North Melbourne up against the high-flying Magpies. The Roos will need a near-perfect performance to trouble a Collingwood side sitting atop the ladder.

      The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

    • CASEY: Southport

      The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
