Stop making so much sense Dr. Gonzo

We are and always will be the weakest supporter base in the AFL

We have about 20k passionate paid up supporters who turn up win, lose, draw, rain & hail

20k paid up supporters, who turn up when we’re winning (at least paid up)

Then the barrackers, probably another 20-25k, these are the ones that don’t pay memberships & don’t care

All clubs have barrackers but ours outnumber  our members by 10 times

Its embarrassing & we deserve everything we get

Sometimes people cannot attend games when they have to work. Covid and new work arrangements can make it hard to attend games. Beggars cannot be choosers in this current day. The club just has to accept that people are doing it hard at the moment.

And there would be a fair proportion of members who don't go to many games at all

They support the club with their money ... I'd say about up to 20% - 25% would be in that bracket

And that's right across the board at most of the clubs.

I for one will be on crowd watch this season and will keep this thread going accordingly

North pulled 13k to a home game under the roof ... where is the vitriol? (both here and elsewhere)

Comments please even if it ruins your own argument ... I'm expecting crickets

MACCA  get your facts straight please!

We have won more games than lost in the last 3 out of 4 years

2017   12 W  10  L

2018   16 W   9   L

2020    9 W     8 L

Sime of your reasons are so condescending "Small Club with Small supporter base"

In 2017/18 we were SIXTH and FOURTh in AFL crowds attracting more than 1 million on 2018 !!!

Consequently the 52k plus membership in 2019 where we blew a chance of consolidating that figure.

Age and Covid and other reasons don't cut the mustard as people should be getting out and resuming life with the vaccine in the offing.

As that little kid in the Wife  Swap program ad says " Your rules ( reasons) are rubbish."

You either support or not!

41,000 members and only 21,000 present

Lets see how many vs Cats if we win the next 2 or even the Giants game and the Cats are back on the winners list!

Why do hate so many of your fellow supporters?

You constantly berate others with your hate based on your own over-the-top optimism

You and your glass half empty reasoning (which lacks logic and intelligence)

We lost 17 games in 2019 ... did you forget that year purposely?

Endorphins overload has a downside ... and hope, faith & trust will get you absolutely nowhere in life

Lose the hate 58er and allow others to display their feelings

I think we all need to hop on Neeld's Reality Bus here for a second. I think 2021 AFL total crowds will be a good 10-15% off 2019 AFL total crowds based on COVID alone.  There could be another outbreak in mid-winter and things could shut down again as happened in Europe mid-winter particularly as international flights start again and due to slow vaccine roll out. Based on this threat alone, and a few of the elderly maybe reconsidering attendance this is a reasonable estimate.  Before making this a club issue, we will have to normalize numbers against COVID, which wont be easy until we have played ~10 rounds and can start digesting the numbers with a bit more confidence.

What other Depressing events and drama can you predict for 2021 Ricky so that we can stay home and get more depressed!!!

Really the state  has been locked up for Months and getting out safely is an option for all ages starting to get back into some  normality agsin.

Just follow the health advice and wear a mask if you are worried.  All places are following a Covid Safe plan for the states benefit.

If you get a sniffle .....,,,,,,,,,,,,,,get tested!!!!

Lol.

The crowd number is a direct correlation to our performances over the last two years.

Suck it up.

Over to the players.

Inspire us.

Lol

The team you support had a win on the weekend. Those who could be bothered turning up were able to enjoy it instead of sooking at home in silent protest.

Had a prior commitment actually.

But unlike you and the happy-go-luckies, I can completely understand why some supporters don't show up.

Give them something to rock up to.

Maybe some consistency in effort and application? Dknow, just my thoughts.

No but some reasons and lack of logic are as I said are just rubbish from grown people defending the indefensible.

I have a General attitude of positivity and Clubs  and Groups can't exist and prosper with negative nancies spoiling efforts by hard working volunteers and even some professional expertise.

However some  have no other lot in life and at times I would rather support my Club than the naysayers if their opinion is IMO not factual or even contains common sense. I also are able to publicly support many posters but you don't see who who ticks the buttons under the posts!!!

MFC average pull from a Freo home match in recent years is around 23k.

The 'excitement' of first game of year and 'footy is back' clearly offset by interstate supporters couldn't travel. Others definitely chose to stay away from crowds.  Fair nuff.

Crowds were down across the weekend for every match vis a vis historical levels (even factoring in caps) So really, the 21k is pretty much bang on reasoned expectations.  Everyone cant be hating their team and sending a message surely.

Fair weather supporters can [censored] right off imo.

You either support the club or you don't.

If there was ever a time for people to be champing at the bit to get to a game - having not been able to attend for so long - that was it.

I'm not saying everyone has to attend every game. People have reasons why they can't attend. It's the ones who won't go because they're trying to "send the club a message" that [censored] me off.

That is a shocking figure for North. Their and the AFL's higher ups would be extremely concerned about that. There is a view amongst several clubs (notably the interstate clubs like Sydney, WCE as well as Kennett at Hawthorn) that there are still too many Vic clubs. Combine that with Tassies push for a team and having 13k or 21k turn up puts those clubs in extremely perilous situations.

Many can wholeheartedly support the club and be highly critical of the club at the same time ... or have an attitude where the club can do no wrong.

Bottom line is us supporters can change very little at the club and the club will do what the club will do regardless of what we say and do

Negativity,  positivity ... it means nothing. Talent and good coaching wins games and we are mere spectators & onlookers

By the way,  we might have had a positive W/L record in 2017 & 2020 but we choked it up big time in both years when finals were on the line

And that's what people remember

I have always urged people to buy a membership if they can afford it but I totally get it if they stay away because they are dissatisfied with the product on display.

And you know what?  Sporting clubs the world over deal with the above reasoning on a year to year basis.  It's incumbent on the club to put on a good show otherwise they run the risk of losing their customers

Ever been in business?

The Tassie reasoning is a cop out by the media & footy fans (re North) ... "They're heading to Tassie anyway" (bs)

As previously stated,  whenever there is a crowd numbers issue it's always our supporters who cop it (flavour of the selected moment?)

I remember Vlad threatening us years ago re Queens Birthday ... meanwhile the club itself was in full tank mode and was basically a basket-case

Blame the supporters?  Utterly ridiculous

Again, we are the clubs greatest asset

Some  fair points Macca but I really find misinformation and copouts too hard to ignore.
Constructive  criticism is fine and Clubs welcome it but really they get like here the reality of having to suffer some f..ls gladly. ( Even if they mean well) ..

They are just frustrated and who can blame them

But hey, it's all just harmless banter anyway ... our words doesn't change things either

Here's some positive stuff ... if T-Mac fires up again and we produce another marking forward next week (Gawn? LJ?) we'll beat the Saints and remain in the top 4

Make it happen MFC!!!

My parents were set to go, had the tickets and all (not without their issues though), unfortunately my dad got crook in the morning so they opted not to go. I’m definitely not saying that they wussed out but the memories of 2019 are still fresh. That was a seriously deflating season for the fans, after so much positivity from 2018 to dish up such garbage I think it really did a number on even the most passionate of fans. The fans have trust issues, ideally we’d turn up rain, hail, shine, and win/loss, but have a winning product and the excuses will fade away.

500 Freo supporters.  1000 port fans. AFL screwed up Kangas and Dees again.  Day games.

Bombers-Hawks, Pies-Dogs,Blues-Tigers. Thursday, Friday and Saturday night games.

AFL cries at poor crowds but gives us a crap draw and crap scheduling.

Early call. Dees v Cats round 4.  Crowd size  45,000+.

We are 3-0 so you would expect the fair-weather supporters to start to surface.

The capacity is 75,000 but I doubt we will see that. 50,000 maybe. 25,000 Dees and same for Geelong??

I wonder how the memberships are tracking.

50,000 would be great but IMO we'll do well to clear 40,000.

Hawthorn v Richmond last Sunday at 1.10pm drew 41,051. Today was 50,000 but Easter Monday is a bit more "blockbuster" than next week will be.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was.
