i understand that.  But what is the advantage of not disclosing the broad schedule of who plays who round by round.  What matters to ch7 is the time slot.  It doesn't matter to them who the Home team is or the venue.

I understand the Covid argument, but we need to go into the season with a full fixture and a contingency plan.

I would normally agree except I got caught out last year booking flights and accommodation to the Gold Coast for an early season game. I have a credit with the airline which I’ll use again but trying to get the accommodation refund was a pain. Even If a full fixture was released now I certainly wouldn’t be making any firm plans. It’ll be a late decision for me this year (hoping we’re playing in Adelaide this year on a Fri night or Sat. haven’t seen Adelaide oval yet).

A concern of the 'Frenzy footy' over two weeks is if a club is scheduled to play 2-3 of the top teams on 4 or 5 day breaks.  At least if the AFL announce the full round by round fixture (without dates and times) it is less open to AFL manipulation.  I have the same concern if a club is unduly disadvantaged by a heavy travel schedule during the frenzy time.  The AFL showed this year that it was completely unfair in its rostering of travel/breaks.

Publish the whole thing (without dates and times) up front is the fairest way to go.

I think the opposite is true. What’s the point in locking in a full fixture when it can change at the drop of a hat? We’ve seen what happened in Adelaide this week. If that happens in season any fixtures with SA teams and their opponents are up in the air and need to be re-scheduled etc. throwing the remaining fixture into disarray.

I think a full fixture at this point is a waste of time.

It can change at the drop of a hat regardless of whether it is released in full in February or in 4 week  blocs.

The Pandemic will still be around in 2021 so i am not suprised the fixture is going to be rolling

We and Essendon were screwed by the frenzy in 2020.

Would there be any chance that we could ask the AFL to give us some consideration as a result in 2021 by ensuring no 4 day breaks?

I wasn't a great fan of the frenzy this year, let alone having one next year. However, I can see an argument as to why the AFL might want to have another one in 2021. At the moment, the only hard evidence they've got is that in 2020, it was a success. Before disposing of it, perhaps they need to find out whether it remains as popular in a more normal season.

We can all make a prediction about what we think will happen. I predict it will be unpopular but TV ratings will be good, but not as good as 2020. But unless there is empirical evidence, what we think is not particularly helpful. After the 2021 season the AFL will have evidence about the frenzy model in two years under (hopefully) completely different circumstances. It would then be appropriate to make future decisions based on that evidence.

No they screwed us with the positive test.  Meant we missed that break to reset later in the season when it was in the frenzy.

 

I liked the frenzy being WA I go to watch more footy as it was over the week, not over 3/4 days.  More footy the better.  

Now that is has been done, I can see it becoming a regular part of the season. But in the long term the response may be  like the baseball, footy where they have specialist players that rotate through to reduce fatigue.

Is that good for the game? It means we wouldn't have the best players playing every week (or, subject to injury, as often as possible).

There's two issues here.

One is the days of the week on which games are played and the other is the dynamic fixture.

I'm now firmly a fan of Thursday night football on TV. I would like the game to be finished by around 10pm which means a 7:20pm start and perhaps a shorter half time break.

Same goes for Sunday night but I must admit it has to be a good game to get me to watch as my usual limit is 3-4 games.

I could like a game on Monday night but it would need to be at least medium level interest.

Tuesday and Wednesday would be overkill.

As to the dynamic nature of the fixture it will almost certainly not favour the MFC in that unlike say Collingwood who will get TV exposure because they are Collingwood we will also need demonstrated success. It is also likely to cost us significantly in the possible loss of our two blockbusters. Finally, the fixture was a little easier with only 17 games in 2020. If you have 22 when do you know which teams you will play twice?

i think they are doing it because they think there could still be covid problems and restrictions in 2020 and they want to squeeze more games into a short time as insurance against possible delays caused by covid

at least i hope this is their reasonings. i hope they are not thinking of doing this stuff when we get back to normal seasons

It seems to me that the AFL have tunnel vision on placating the broadcasters and forgetting that a vital revenue stream is memberships. Some of this stuff will push people away from attendance and the more people can watch on TV, the less they'll want to purchase a membership.

It could go both ways!   They could match the weaker side to keep ongoing competition for spots in the 8 till the last round, That could be a win, depending your season. Or you plain manipulation to get a "big" club into the finals for revenue by giving them weaker sides to play. 

Though overall a more flexible fixture could result in a closer season.

memberships for the power clubs are reaching a practical peak. Room perhaps for a 20% increase at most but it's not a fundamental money spinner heading forward.

Even for the lesser clubs you have to wonder except that they are yet to discover in the main the golden goose of the reserved seat.

I actually wonder if one of the reasons they’re doing it is to cram MORE games in, say get it up to 25 games for the year to make up for the absence of games last year (and renegotiate a cheeky broadcast deal). Perhaps even go down the Amazon TV path like the premier league.

The one good thing about that is that in some ways it makes the season fairer where you play more teams twice, but of course what happens if in the frenzy run you play tough matches vs a team that gets a softer draw. It could make or break your season.

Sale of a Thursday or Monday night game to Optus would be on in a flash if the AFL thought they could still keep the Foxtel money.

Not sure the all powerful AFLPA would let them play 25 games without a 10% pay rise but I have no issue with it.
The only thing  I couldn't stand is another year hearing how Qld saved the AFL.

I will be angry if they don't bring back The normal length quarters. Players are now wasting 4-5 minutes a quarter going sideways, backwards and generally nowhere.

Because they are completly control by the broadcasters. I think that Gil is now Broadcast media CEO. It is getting to the stage that going to a game is not important to the  AFL. Why bother with a membership just sign up to Kayo and get all the other sports as a bonus. I am sure he would be happy with that. Oh and get a hair cut Gil you look ridiculous !

Thanks for that Gil. Seriously there is a difference between giving up some things and being their slave. If they continue to ignore fans who prefer going to games the base will quickly erode. Why buy a membership if it gets harder and harder to go to games.
