Got a feeling north want same player we do with 26 hence them going so hard for that pick and we just trumped them getting ahead of that pick with the deal with Swans

If that is the case very smart by the dees

i reckon it's all about packaging up picks for points value

we won't have 25 and 28 at the draft

I think we are trying to package the picks to the WBD for either #14 or any Dunkley picks this year. The Dogs can only use points for available list spots, so we had to sacrifice points in this trade with Sydney to concentrate the value.

We could look to trade #25, #26 and #50 for #8 if that goes in a Dunkley trade.

How does 25 possibly equal 31 + 43? Should be closer to pick 20 under any metric.

We are dead set kidding ourselves if taking two live picks in this draft is anywhere near enough.

Right now we've got:

2nd round: 25, 28

3rd round: 50

4th round: 68, 69

How about you wait until the cake is fully baked ...

Other clubs must think we are serial pests the way we keep asking to swap picks. Yet it is fantastic that all clubs know we are open to do business. That's what trading is all about.

My guess now is that we are after Bulldogs pick 14, because they will lose it on Jamar-Ugle anyway.

Haven't done the maths but picks 25 and 28 are worth more points than 14 I think.

Pick 25 (756 points) + Pick 28 (677 points) = 1,433

Pick 14 = 1,161

In my ideal, dream world, could we not package up picks 25 and 28 for Fremantle's Hayden Young - that way we get back a local lad and superb kick and solve our left-side issues in one hit?

I reckon Freo would take the two second rounders for Young - just!

I think we're a possibility to get into the top 10 with our picks. Turning more of our lower picks into fewer picks of similar value allows us to trade with teams that have very high picks and not that many available list spots. This is especially the case with list sizes reducing.

For instance, you can't throw a million 4th rounders at the Dogs because they have only had 5 open list spots before the list reductions. That means that they only have 2 empty spots, effectively, so we can't give them more picks than they can use in the draft. For example (hypothetically), they may have 3 list spots going in to the draft, so they can't have 5 picks in the 3rd and 4th round to use for draft points. As a result we need to give them enough points that they can use in as few picks as possible.

Pick 25 and 28 is the equivalent of pick 10. Add in 50 and it gets to pick 7.

Correct 25 and 28 are worth 1433 or about pick 10. Pick 14 is 1161.

So either this, or we know we are after the same player as North so trumped them.

In a good spot to trade up or wait and see what may fall, it's a valuable hand to have.

Some opportunities may open if the Cameron deal gets done for 13 & 15, will be nice if the Dogs end up getting pick 8 for Dunkley as well. Decent chance Collingwood would snatch that in a potential Treloar trade, but who knows? They're pushing AT out, but if they're paying 300k per annum toward his contract, they can probably ask for a decent pick in return.

Would give us some diverse options in trading up.

I mentioned in another thread that we appear to aiming higher than the bulldogs pick #14.

It will be very difficult to dislodge any of the top 5 picks.  So I reckon we may be targetting one of Ess picks 6,7 or 8 whether they stay with Ess or end up someone else.

eg if pick 8 goes to the bulldogs for Dunkley+/-or to GWS for Caldwell+/- we are more likely to aim for it once it changes hands.  A much easier transaction than trying to deal with Dodoro.

But there is no hurry to do the pick swap as there is 3-4 weeks of pick swap time before the draft (and live draft).  Let the dust settle and then let Mahoney go to work.

Why would Essendon want to do those sorts of deals - have they got a few Academy/FS players this draft?

Because they want Dunkley and are committed to taking Caldwell.  Both Bulldogs and GWS asking for a 1st round pick so a fair chance that pick 8 will find its way to another club as part of a trade for the player plus other picks.  It may even end up at Coll if Bulldogs use#8 for Treloar.

Still a fair bit to play out with Ess picks 6,7,8.  When the music stops at 7.30 pm we will know where they end up.

True.  But the comment/post refers to where pick 6,7,8 end up at COB (7.30 pm) tonight.  And whether we go for one of them (eg #8) in pick swaps in the next few weeks.

My theory is we will aim higher than Bulldogs pick #14.

I'm confused.  If 25 = 756 points, and pick 31 and 43 = 984 points, then if we're looking to trade with doggies, then we've gone backwards?

Can someone please explain?  Think I missed something.

It could be do to with the rules around matching Academy bids.

helps our bargaining position for further on-trading to get into the first round

melbourne's 25+28 = 1433 points (equivalent pick 10)

north melbourne's 26+30 = 1338 points (equivalent pick 11)

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
