My best 22.

Highlighted are those that I'd like to see start there but with no real conviction.

TMac - Tomlinson vying for CHB

Lockhart - Jetta for back pocket

Baker and ????? for other wing

Melksham and maybe Hunt for the forward flank

i'm going off the assumption that the central back 7 of rd 18, 2020, will be the core around which we build - i personally am not a huge fan of smith, hibberd, and tomlinson in the same line-up, but it would seem that the footy dept. like it and it holds to my theory that we're more trying to emulate geelong's back 7 approach

it looks like a middle-tier side to me, right where we were in 2018 and 2020 - somewhere between 5th and 11th, before finals

seniors
B: Smith - May - Lever
HB: Hibberd - Tomlinson - Rivers
C : Langdon - Petracca - Salem
HF: Melksham - Weideman - Hunt
F: Fritsch - B Brown - Pickett
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Viney
I/c: Harmes - Jackson - Brayshaw - Baker
Emerg: Jones - vandenBerg - McDonald - Sparrow

reserves
B: Jetta - Hore - Lockhart
HB: Bowey - Petty - Chandler
C : Jordon - Jones - Rosman
HF: Neal-Bullen - McDonald - Spargo
F: Laurie - M Brown - Bedford
Foll: Bradtke - vandenBerg - Sparrow
I/c: Nietschke - to - be - determined

Like some of this - TMac on a wing might suit his running stamina, but he does telegraph his disposals too obviously. Pop Harmes to the FPkt to provide a double-sided prong on leads, with Fritta; then with Jackson, to HFFlk in a utility, mobile role. Petty may be good if fit at CHB; if not, Tomlinson is adaptable.

hore > smith forever and ever

if thats our r1 side by end of season i'd hope Laurie/Petty/Sparrow usurp Melk/Tomlinson/Hunt in the side comfortably and u could even make a case for Spargo/Bowey over baker then too

obviously we signed 3 forwards at the draft 1 in trade period and 1 TBC in deakyn smith so it makes sense next year we upgrade the backline with riv/salo pushing up, hibbo/nev getting on and jury still out on mature agers hore/smith/lockhart and it would be nice to have a tall developing behind may for 3/4 years time too. especially seeing as our mids are set for another 5/6 years

Bowey is training with the backs which is interesting. I don't mind it but I think our main weaknesses lie forward of centre.

I hope Laurie progresses quickly as I'd love to see one of our mid-sized forwards left out for another small.

I’d like to see an intraclub match between those two teams. It may very well lead to a rethink!

I haven't seen anything, Turner. My info comes from the wonderful Demonland podcast and their recent interview with Jason Taylor.

I don't recall him mentioning any intel on those guys but others may be able to chime in.

Could Bowey as half back push Salem forward onto the wing?

Best way to go pre-season. Illuminating - eliminates myths and reputations on an even playing field.

Spargo, Lockhart & Baker a bit stiff. They love Sparrow too so I'm sure he probably find his way in but no idea where he fits.

Quite possibly. I can't think of an alternative, unless we have a fairly bold omission from that back line.

Interesting, young team. But hard to imagine that five of our best 22 would be in their first or second season.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
