We won't be getting Smith, Hind and Phillips.  I'd say we will get one, maybe two at the absolute most.

Hind goes okay but I think I'd rather Smith or Phillips.

Why?

We need pace in the forward half. Hind knows how to find the goals.

Smith and Phillips will play off half back and the wing respectively if we land them.

I think we could well get them all. I'd still love Jack Higgins, but he may not want to leave Tigerland.

I just can't see us turning over the list that much.

If we're letting players go like the McDonald brothers, then we need to bring in some talls as well.

And hey, maybe I'm wrong.  Maybe we go out there and get all three to add to the list, as well as someone like Brown.  I'd be shocked if I did, but happy to eat my words if we do.

Edit - also, I don't see Hind as someone any different than Hunt.  Both bring pace, both don't find the ball all that much and both can hit the scoreboard.  We can't fit both of those types in our forward half.

Our bottom 6-8 aren't good enough. IMV we need to turn over that bottom half of the list to see if we can find some competent and consistent role players for 2021.

Fair enough. I can see that.

I was surprised to find that Hind and Higgins have similar career average statistics.

They're both almost equal for goals, behinds, tackles, inside 50s, goal assists, disposal efficiency, and metres gained (Hind leads metres gained, Higgins leads the rest but all by 0.1 or 0.2 or so).

Hind' lags behind in disposals, CPs and clearances, suggesting Higgins gets up the ground and into the middle more maybe?

Interesting. Nice spot mate. I'd say we probably view Hind as a cheaper option than Higgins. I'd take both though.

This is fair. Hunt's career average stats are all equal or better than Hind in almost every relevant stat.

I agree with this, and I think it is why we are being linked to players like Smith, Brown and Phillips.  I think the club identifies this aspect and will do what they can, in the current landscape, to rectify it.

Much will also depend on who we can move on as well.  If we can flick both McDonald brothers then I'd say it opens up further options for us, especially getting Tom off the books.

Yep, our window with our midfield and defensive core is 2021-2025. If we can win a flag or two in that time then we'll be able to prolong that window by topping up with FAs to address needs.

Even better, my son will be able to grow up with a successful Melbourne. That'd be nice.

I realise it's highlights but he appears to have an agile sidestep that Hunt lacks and looks strong on both sides. Hunt is not going to take us there, We should delist him, and I do think somone will pick him up and gve him a go - good luck to him.

If we got him for nothing, or a late pick which we wouldn't use, then there are no complaints from me.

But he doesn't look like much of an upgrade, if at all, to me.

i watched Hind go head to head with Oskar Baker in the VFL a couple of years ago. it was a good old fashioned winger shoot out with both racking up the possessions and in the best players for their teams, but i didn't see much to suggest that he's any better than what Baker is really. maybe he's improved a bit in an AFL system, but i can't see him drastically improving our team.

If we think he can become a forward hitting the scoreboard and applying pressure he could be a cheap get. Especially if Hannan and maybe one of ANB or Bedford go.

Of that 3 Bedford is the keeper. The other 2 have no upside.

If we trade out Preuss, ANB and Hannan I can easily imagine us getting 3 players in of that quality.

But I doubt we'd go for both Smith and Phillips. 1 wingman at a time I'd imagine.

The way I'm reading a lot of these deals is that Essendon, Collingwood and Geelong have been allowed to operate outside of the 7.30 deadline.

It's okay, they have the Tip-Ex App installed on their email systems.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
