What’s the latest with Van Rooyen? Will he be available at our pick? Have a hunch in this kid and is exactly the type of player we should be having a crack at. He is probably the the #2 or #3 forward of this years draft and could also play down back if he lacks forward craft. Will either take Mays or TMac spot in 2-3 years time.

Van Rooyen has been one of my favourites since the start of the season and looks gettable by the club if you follow the draft experts most of who all seem to be singing from the same choir book on draft eve (the Herald Sun joined in the chorus today). The consensus is that he will be selected by Brisbane with the last selection in Round 1 tonight.

I don't think the club is as interested in a KPP selection at that stage of the draft than I am. They're the ones with their jobs on the line so I'll leave it to them.

Apparently next year has quality talls, so I reckon we go for the tall this year and snag a quality mid next year with other clubs preoccupied going for KPP’s themselves.

I don’t really see it with him. Not overly tall. Good but not great athlete. Ok skills but no real stand out attribute.

I think he’s more in the Petty, T Mc even young Turner model of player. 

I’d rather use cheaper options on depth talls and be patient until a May or Ben Brown replacement becomes available.

With regards to Knightmare, in his postmortem of our 2019 draft he rated Melbourne equal last with 5 other clubs and 12 clubs ahead.

He gave Melbourne a C.

"While Melbourne's trade looks on paper like value was acquired, their first two picks of ruckman Luke Jackson and small forward pressure specialist Kysaiah Pickett are arguably reaches. Jackson, a sub 200cm ruckman is athletic, plays with aggression and follows up well but was arguably not the best available player. Similarly, Pickett while the forward pressure he applies is of a best in draft standard and he has speed and is damaging with ball in hand, his low scoreboard impact and product makes him a difficult sell so early on."  Thankfully, he liked the Rivers pick.

Amazingly, we have 3 premiership players from that draft, who were all staples of the 22.

He was more encouraged by the team he supports, giving Collingwood an A.

''Jay Rantall represents strong value as a basketball convert with elite endurance who does his best work inside winning the contested ball, distributing by hand and moving through traffic. Oakleigh premiership captain Trent Bianco is a second selection who represents strong value as one of the best kicks in the draft and the most advanced outside player in the pool. Trey Ruscoe at 192cm with his versatility to play defence, midfield or forward, is a third solid selection with his skills, mobility, ball winning capabilities and the way he reads the ball in flight and takes marks.''

Never rated Chris Doerre for having an eye for talent, this just sums it up perfectly. Been watching his appraisals all the way back since the late 00’s when he was just a bigfooty keyboard warrior and nothing much has changed. There’s a reason he hasn’t advanced from being draft guru at the AFL juggernaut that is ESPN.

Some sliders past round 1 - Johnson, Howes, Sonsie, Butler, Draper and Goater.  Some bargains there.  Predicted 2nd rounders like Zac Taylor, Bazzo, Knevitt and Conway should also go in the next round by the early-mid 30s. 

Hopefully (but at long odds) Connor Macdonald falls to our next pick.  Highly skilled running midfielder would be another great addition.

I’m really grateful for this thread and to all of those who took part in what was sometimes a robust discussion on the next batch of recruits.  On re-reading the thread from the beginning, I’m actually feeling very chirpy about the outcome of the draft and the selections made by Jason Taylor and his team. From very early on I gained an appreciation of the Jacob Van Rooyen and his recruitment - especially with posters like WJ and Chelly pumping his tyres. The debate about the qualities of Mac Andrew was fascinating and not disrespectful to the player but more so about the way some of the “experts” were bending the truth to push their agenda. After my lengthy re-read I really don’t mind that he’s been taken elsewhere. It is what it is and he certainly wasn’t “trashed” as one poster has claimed in an unwarranted attack on WJ. It’s worth going to the interesting discussion above between Dazzle and him on and around 1 September where WJ expressed his preference of Van Rooyen over Andrew. We also heard in the thread about Melbourne’s interest in Blake Howes. It’s amazing how this thread virtually zeroed in on our choices in this draft. Thanks and well done to all who contributed.

It’s also worth remembering that we very likely have Kalani White coming in as a father-son selection in a couple of years. He’ll be huge.

By that time Mach, the AFL will  no doubt have enforced a new rule that F/S picks cannot be matched if selected in round 1.

I know what you’re saying, but I also don’t think they’ll ever do that. I feel like the romanticism of the father-son system will ensure it stays in place, and as long as a team is willing to pay the requisite price, the league will allow them to secure the son.

It may be the case that the price rises, but I doubt that also.
